Lately I’ve been really into being honest to people about my positive feelings towards them. I told my classmate that I’ve admired her creativity from the start and named a project of hers that I loved, and her face lit up! I took the train with a project partner the other day and told her that I always have so much fun with her, and it prompted an entire conversation about the difficulties of graduating from ‘classmates’ to ‘friends’ and both of our insecurities in this regard (and how we’re definitely getting coffee later). I express my gratitude honestly. I say what I feel if I’d be happy hearing it, myself. I remember details so that I can refer to them later. Once you realize how great you can make someone feel, all of those mundane moments become so special. It will maybe even create some lasting connections, something I think we could all use more of.

“bits to use in everyday conversations”
I think one of the funniest abortion stances I've heard was from my parents neighbor. He's a like, hard-core libertarian viking larper guy who is very tall and very fat and very bald.
He believes a fetus is human with a soul, but also its "basically attacking the woman's body" so if she wants to get rid of it, that's "basically self-defense". He compared it to shooting a home invader. So he supports abortion not as healthcare, but as killing a baby in self-defense
Y'know I'm so glad someone reminded me of this. Because this was also discussed.
My stepmother did NOT like the way her Libertarian Viking Neighbor framed pregnancy as the fetus "attacking the woman". She incredulously told him this was extremely disrespectful to expectant mothers to portray pregnancy as so violent and negative.
Libertarian Viking Neighbor's response was that people consensually hurt each other all the time, and "there's like a whole community about that, with the acronym the one that starts with a B" And his reasoning was that if the mother was consenting to bring attacked by the baby, it in fact wasn't violent and negative because there was consent.
He brought up people consensually hurting each other, didn't go for one of the obvious answers like boxing or body mods or something, no he went STRAIGHT TO BDSM and he DIDN'T EVEN REMEMBER THE ACRONYM
i support universal free healthcare for one simple reason: if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness you should quit your job. quitting your job is the correct response to terminal illness. but you can’t do that if your healthcare is tied to your job
listen if somebody knows that they will be dead in a years time, and you are forcing them to continue to come into work, that’s fucked up. terminally ill people should be able to quit their jobs and live their last few months to the fullest. i don’t get how that’s a controversial opinion

This is not just serious illness.
It’s any illness.

writings and tangential explorations of moon safari by air
It’s way too frigid to be out. The windchill is subzero. Still, you get anxious being stuck inside, and going on walks makes you happier. You also want an excuse to relisten to Moon Safari. Your boss said you need to keep moving because once you stop you'll never start again. By all accounts, you believe she was right.
It's a gorgeous album. It has the smoothest bass tone you've ever heard, and synthesizers that fill you with true joy. You wonder why you haven't listened to it in over a year.
As 'Sexy Boy' plays, you remember you still need to finish 10 Things I Hate About You. You act like you watched it, rated it on Letterboxd and everything, but in truth you had to leave the movie night with your friends early and only got through, like, 7 things.
The album breathes love and sensuality. It's romantic in a way only a French band could be. Françoise Hardy and Stereolab evoke similar aesthetics. It gets you thinking about this guy you've been trying not to.
You know he'd love this album. Despite his usual taste for pretentious blackmetal, he has a soft spot for funk influence, and atmospheric soft melodies. The vocoder in Kelly Watch The Stars would be right up his alley.
You started sporadically texting him about a year ago, and over the summer he took you and your friend to a death metal show. You never really enjoyed metal before that night, but that concert changed a lot. You liked him then and you like him now.
That night, he made self-deprecating jokes about not being able to get a girlfriend. Maybe you should've made a move then. Maybe if you did you wouldn't be in your present situation. You know why you didn't though; his self-deprecation annoyed you, you didn't look very good, and besides you didn't wanna ruin the night. If you were still in the same shoes today you likely wouldn't do anything different, except maybe style your hair better.
These days he's so busy you couldn’t really make a move if you wanted to, or maybe you just use that as an excuse to justify him not responding to your texts. You have this sinking feeling that he's talking to someone, but you don't know because you can't ask him.
You think again about 10 Things I Hate About You. The way Kat Stratford was won over with a grand romantic gesture. You think that perhaps you, too, ought to take action. Something small, but something. Anything to shake things up, because you've been stuck in this strange dynamic with him for too long. Still, hope is always the driving force that keeps you going, and you are scared of putting yourself in a position where you could potentially lose that.
The events of 10 Things I Hate About You remain a purely imagined romcom fantasy.
'You Make It Easy' is a beautiful track, and it categorically does not reflect your current reality.
Is love supposed to be easy?
It's hard to tell, because based on every anecdotal instance you've ever known of love, whether or not it’s meant to be painful is entirely fixated on the ultimate outcome, which is currently impossible to know.
You pull yourself away from your musings to take in your surroundings. You photograph nearby robins on your Canon, but you brought the wrong lens, and the birds are permanently stuck far away and distant.
As Ce matin-là hums on, you become acutely aware of the frigid wind, and how numb and stiff your fingertips have become. You shove your hands in your pockets with a unique panic, as you debate the real possibility of frostbite. New Star in the Sky isn’t your favorite track, but it has a distinct calming quality, and grounds you as you gaze around your surroundings. No one else is at the park, and that fact gives you a certain sense of liberation as you begin to head home.
Le Voyage de Pénélope is a funky and beautiful closing track, and as you listen to it, you feel better than where you began. The final notes are left quiet and open-ended, akin to the ending of Moonrise Kingdom. The album doesn't offer answers, but it does offer a journey. As it ends, it leaves the doors open to a new journey, wherein if you are brave enough, you can begin to search for your own answers.
