Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone's a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.

Niamh had been sitting at the bar, sipping on an iced tea. She'd noticed the man sitting at the table all alone a little while ago.

He seemed to be waiting for someone, but as the time ticked by, no one sat with him. It was...sad. Not sad in a pathetic way, but sad in that he seemed lonely.

She frowned to herself. Picking up her tea, she slid off of the bar stool and made her way over to his table. Maybe she was about to do something really silly, but...she hated seeing people look lonely.

"Do you mind if I sit with you?" she asked. She gave him a friendly smile. "The bar stools aren't very comfortable."

🔬 ▪︎▪︎▪︎ He blinks up in surprise at the sudden voice addressing him-- not having expected company... ironically enough. At first, he thinks maybe it was Shelley, maybe she'd come after all and really had only been running late-- ignoring the hour and half that's passed thus far, apparently all would have been forgiven the instant she arrived... at least momentarily. He does.... he really does try his best not to look too disappointed upon seeing this woman's face. It's not like it's her fault. But he does, unfortunately, kind of visibly deflate when he sees a face that is not that of a one Shelley Hemmings. He recovers himself as quickly as he can, swallowing dryly before straightening himself in his seat. Great... just great... some stranger taking pity on me, looking like some sad old man dining alone or something... ugh... he thinks to himself. David kind of just licks his lips a bit, grey-blue eyes fluttering away from the woman rather awkwardly from over his thick-rimmed glasses. "Ah." He breathes, then clears his throat, offering her a nod and forced smile. "I..." He hesitates. "er-- yes... go ahead... I-- was leaving soon anyway." His eyes shift to the doorway for just a moment, as though still hoping (though idiotically) that his date might still show. But he looks away again, feeling rather pathetic all of a sudden -- unable to quite meet this young woman's eyes for the moment.

🔬 ▪︎▪︎▪︎ Pinching the tip of his straw, he idly stirs his drink; the ice tinkling softly against the sides of the glass. David sits there with his fist on his cheek, hoping he doesn't look quite as disappointed as he feels.

The man sighs quietly, straightening himself up a bit when a waitress hovers nearby, giving him a pitying look. Christ, he hated that... He just smiles as best he can, adjusting his glasses and waving the woman away as politely as possible. '... just... waiting on a friend. they're running late.' he reassures the girl, but that only earns him smile and nod of sympathy; she knew he was full of shit.

He's been stood up. He knows it's true. Hell, he's known for the past hour that he's sat here. But honestly, he was really just hoping to be proven wrong or something, and that tonight could in fact, be a nice night anyway -- ridiculous a thought as it was.

They didn't even bother to message him to let him know they weren't coming. '...That's the last time I use dating apps...' he grumbles mentally. But even so, fool he was... here he still sat. He'd give them another half hour. Yeah... maybe just another half hour and then he'd leave... Then he'd go home and have a glass of wine or something while he gets ready for work in the morning... more of the same.

I have added said muse <3 mr biology teacher. mr bespectacled, salt & pepper ''a little too serious'' emotionally constipated guy who tends to come off as a bit of an ass work-wise, but only because of how passionate he is about his subject of choice (though it doesn't really show... he just really likes biology and wishes he could do more but has to tone it down cause High School(tm). feels deeply unfulfilled, and def is a victim of his generation,,, he's not a bad guy, but he is hard to get to know and be friendly with in any way that matters bc of .... stuff and things. he's also maybe too smart for his own good?? that whole 'intelligent people tending to be the most unhappy'' thing is .. definitely a thing. also tends to be like, rather suspicious of people if they try to get close and can sometimes self-sabotage himself socially because of it. there will be mention of alcoholism (he's clean!! he struggles sometimes is all) as well as infidelity (was cheated on).

hello <3 I have.... a new character I'd like to be adding here soon <: ) yet another mundane Just A Guy, guy kfhsehfd ofcofc... his name is David Thompson... he's like 46 years old.. salt n pepper hair, works as a highschool biology teacher and is generally one of those teachers people either like / respect or really don't like bc he might take his job a little too seriously (but just because he loves the subject and hes also Tired(tm) and a bit depressed and run down etcetc, he's got his own shit going on and is sometimes a bit grouchy because of it; tends to not warm up to people easily and though CAN be pretty charismatic SOMETIMES.... he also has difficulty making and maintaining any kind of relationships of any sort <3 really is just at that age where he gets home, sighs and makes himself some like stir fry or something if he's feeling it, then sits down and browses his phone or computer or watches re-runs of a tv show he watched years ago or smthng. big sci-fi guy, secretly - only secretly because he has some embarrassment in admitting he likes aliens and space and like that kind of like, fantastical stuff that's not 'realistic' bc hes.... kind of a serious man fksdfjhsjf would be mortified if anyone saw him at a like, star trek convention or something HHFDJFJ
