Activities

Put up wards to keep out unwanted spirits

Put jars of salt by your door to protect your home

Sprinkle some salt in your mouth right before you go to bed to protect your dreams

Light candles to help guide spirits

Tell stories of dead relatives and friends

Write about the dead in your book of shadows

Give offerings to your ancestors

Pray at your altar

Cleanse your space with incense

Drink hot drinks

Bake bread or pies

Add fall recipes to your book of shadows

Paint and decorate pumpkins

Contact spirits through divination

Ask for advice from your ancestors

Be thankful for the food you have

Dust and tidy your altar

Look at pictures of deceased loved ones

Dress in fall colors

Go for a walk in nature, observe the leaves turning. Consider the cycles of life and death that govern our world.

Light a bonfire/small fire (safely!) and burn papers with things that no longer serve you, that you cannot afford to take into winter.

Make an offering to your deities or ancestors

Make food with seasonal ingredients symbolic of the final harvest: squashes, pumpkins, grains, apples, spices. Even wine, if you’re allowed to drink.

Prepare your home and yourself for the coldest part of the year. Redo protection spells, clean out clutter, develop sustaining spells for winter.

Reflect on the past year. What did you lose? What people left your life, what things no longer hold meaning for you? How did you change as a person?

Work with various forms of divination, like runes, pendulums, tea leaves, or tarot.

If you do work with ouija boards you better be SUPER DUPER careful. Do not neglect protections, and if you feel uncomfortable, stop, protection spells and cleanse, cleanse, cleanse.

Give some time or money to a cause you’re passionate about. If your harvest is abundant, give back to those who were not so fortunate.

Neurodivergent Witches

I’m neurodivergent and use my craft as part of a way to cope with my mental illnesses, and seek comfort in my day to day life. If you are neurodivergent as well, look into these methods to use along side modern day methods and see if they help as well!

Small rituals you can do

(Especially if you’re a lazy witch)

- Imagine negative energy washing away as you shower/bathe 🚿

- In your morning drink, stir clockwise and place positive intent. (Bonus points if it’s tea! Herbs have many properties)

- Incorporate an herb/spice into your meal - most taste amazing and have great properties

- Manifest good in the day. By either writing it down, or just repeating it in your head for a few times

- Crystals. Just create a bundle of crystals and haul them around all day

- meditate right before you get up in the morning. Well you’re in your bed, meditate for a few minutes and find some calm before your day starts

- Light a candle well you have a bath that corresponds with the correct colour magick 🕯

-Light some incense well cooking, cleaning, playing cards, etc.

-Banish negative energy’s well doing a household chore or cleaning 🧹

Hekatean Witchcraft Recommended Reading List

Books on Hekate:

-Hekate Soteira by Sarah Iles Johnston:

A must read for any Hekate devotee or follower. Discusses Her earlier roles as well as Her position as Cosmic World Soul in the Chaldean Oracles.

-Restless Dead by Sarah Iles Johnston:

Discusses the Ancient Greek views of the dead, which includes a lot of useful information about Hekate.

-Hekate: Liminal Rites by Sorita d’Este and David Rankine:

A great overview of Hekate’s history and many different aspects. An easy, but well informed read.

-Circle for Hekate vol. 1 by Sorita d’Este:

A much more in depth investigation of Hekate’s hostory, highly recommend. There’s a lot of little known info in this book.

-The Argonautica by Apollonius of Rhodes:

This is a classical epic and it follows the journey of Jason. It also, however, discusses Medea and Her worship of Hekate very frequently. Excellent historical viewpoints.

-Theogony by Hesiod:

Contains the Hymn to Hekate which is one of the first literary mentions of Hekate. Outlines Her early, ouranic roles.

-The Goddess Hekate edited by Stephen Ronan:

A difficult to locate text, but an absolutely great study on many different aspects of Hekate’s history.

Books on Ancient Greek Magic and Witchcraft:

-Arcana Mundi by Georg Luck:

Discusses real, historical practices, as well as the texts we have that relate to them. Also discusses many ancient beliefs about magic.

-The Greek Magical Papyri:

An important historical document which illustrates the way much of magic was performed in Ancient Greece and Rome.

-Magic, Witchcraft, and Ghosts in the Greek and Roman Worlds by Daniel Ogden

A great sourcebook which contains excerpts from historical documents on the subject of magic and witchcraft, as well as discussion and analysis of these passages. An essential.

-Magika Hiera edited by Chris A. Faraone and Dirk Obbink:

Discusses a range of different magical practices in Ancient Greece, as well as their relation to theology. Discusses binding tablets, amulets, herbal magic, and more.

-Curse Tablets and Binding Spells from the Ancient World by John G. Gager:

This book has a more narrow focus but is really great and a lot of the information has been useful in reconstructing these practices.

-Greek and Roman Necromancy by Daniel Ogden:

A favorite author of mine and a great study of ancient necromancy, which was a huge component of magic in the ancient world.

-Night’s Black Agents by Daniel Ogden:

Has a great section which discusses Kirke and Medea as the first witches in western mythology and literature.

-Witchcraft and Magic in Europe Volume 2: Ancient Greece and Rome edited by Bengt Ankarloo and Stuart Clark:

Includes essays from many experts on the topics of witchcraft and magic in the ancient world and was my introduction to the subject. Highly recommend this book.
