I just saw the post where staff said the rape threats Maia Crimew got didn't count as harassment and tbh I might just stop using tumblr altogether for real this time
I just think if it can happen to Maia (who's not only well known and liked on tumblr, but also just like, in the world) it's a pretty blatant admision that staff has no intention to enforce TOS evenly or fairly, and they never did. All that stuff about how "we're trying to build a better website for EVERYONE, but we're hamstrung by our higher ups :(((" we heard surrounding Mat Mulenweg's very public mental breakdown rings a lot more hollow when four months later, things just seem to be getting worse.
What sucks is that tumblr is a good website. For all its faults, for all the spaghetti code and frankly attrocious UI choices, the microblogging formula works, and it works even better by virtue of every other social media platform slowly homogenizing themselves into an indistinguishable blob that completely alienates anyone who isn't into short-form video.
It also has a great community. It sounds like a joke, but I really can't think of another site that sees such a high concentration of genuinely interesting, creative and talented people. I don't know if Tumblr just attracts people who create good content, or if it just makes it easier to find them somehow, but it's probably the single most enjoyable platform to scroll by my view.
It's really a shame how incompetent leadership in this site has proben to be, consistently, because I feel like it could really be something with a better team at the helm.
