I'm so glad you asked. I have drawn you into my trap. Now I will talk about space at you because I want to.

There's a solar eclipse! Only Greenland, the Atlantic ocean, and Spain will get any totality, but I as a Michigander will get a teeny tiny bit.

A SIX-PLANET ALIGNMENT ARC!!! According to the internet, Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus, Saturn, Neptune, and Mars will all do a cool little thing.

This is also during the peak of the Perseids meteor shower, which could show 50-100 shooting stars per hour around midnight on the 12th and 13th! This is helped by...

There's a new moon! Not a massive deal but that makes stargazing--and seeing the Perseids--a lot easier.

Vega is like right above me rn

Well on top and a tad south

I really need more stars but each time I get one I forget

And th e big dipper is outta view rn

Moon v bright tonight too

OK so there's this star 

So ok like the distance from Vega to Fawaris is the same distance from Fawaris to this star

It makes a nice Isoceles triangle with Vega & Fawaris

I need to learn how to pronounce these

OK I think it’s Aljanah

Took my sister! Showed her Vega, Sheliak (Sulafat too dim), the right triangle, Arcturus & Eta, and we also found Polaris!

It was nice sharing with her. Too bad she goes to bed like 2-3 hours before I do these.

Back. Maybe not for long

Ive had a rough night and wanted to come outside

Vega and the triangle have moved! Now the triangle is much more East of Vega (but still East North East)

Doubt I'll be able to see Arcturus

There's a tree in the way but I'll give it a shot

Can barely see the moon its low on the horizon and behind a bunch of trees but its bright tonight

I walked a full house awY from my house its 12 30 I should do that 

I can see the handle of the big dipper though

I really want to see arcturus

I need more stars this isnt enough

Im in a horrible mood I feel terrible 

HOWEVER

I found my telescope!

So maybe I'll fork around with that

Like im in the smokies but im not that high up in elevation but still

Fun fact: being higher up typically means more visible stars! This is cause there's less air pressure and less air in general blocking the view.

i never really got it when people made posts about light pollution and seeing all the stars for the first time and crying. i always assumed that everyone has gone on a road trip to a bortle 1.0 place and seen stars like that, and it's fantastic, but not like life changing. and then i went to europe last month and was in a mountaintop village of like 300 people and could see about 5 stars in the sky. like fewer than i can see from my home in a big metropolitan city.

my apologies to the non-africans, i did not realise how fucked your sky is

Man I was moved when I went to the Smokies and was at a sorta high elevation and the moon was full so

I can't imagine how great it is when you're so out there

No wonder people used to travel by stars. No wonder the Greeks could see constellations in such detail.

I'm amazed when I can see Sheliak & Sulafat from my backyard.

I want to go so badly.

Mizar

Mizar is the middle star in the "handle" of the famous Big Dipper constellation!

It was the first double star (two stars that can appear as one due to their closeness) ever recorded! The other star is Alcor.

It's about 83 light years away, so it wee see it as it was when your grandparents were born! (very rough estimate, I don't know your grandparents' age.)

It's estimated at 370 million years old, so about 1/12th the age of our Sol. (I googled it but my head math was right!) (mostly)

No clouds tonight, everything is super bright and visible

The moon is again behind a tree but this time it is due south 

Arcturus my fav is again very easy to spot! Hurray!

I see something else that looks like the ISS
