I’m trying my hand at a multimuse blog just so I can continue to write the characters I enjoy but on simplified/combined dash. Sloane’s being moved there at SHADOWREACHED. Feel free to drop in, say hello, and write.
durant:
“I can.” If it’s a computer, if it’s a MACHINE, Quinn can understand it. Break it down, piece by piece, before building it together. Attention to detail and meticulousness are the two golden traits to a science as particular as that, and Quinn had both in spades. She doesn’t specialize in nav systems. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t know her way around them.
Sloane operates by bullet points and bullets. Absolutes with no half-measures in between. It’s why her answers are tailored to that. Yes or no. I can. I can’t. Sloane expects the full picture. It’s up to people like Quinn to fill in the details.
“I’m here in the interest of & on behalf of the Pathfinder, not the Initiative.” Voice is kept calm and low–the words hold a finality meant to placate, not assert. She knows well enough by now when to ask questions, and when to keep her head down. Better to keep it down than have it end up on a pike, after all.
“I’ll need the navpoint for where this salvage is to take a look at it, see what’s needed to get it in working order. If it’s outside of Kadara Port, I’d appreciate a protective detail to avoid undue interruptions.”
“ And who do you think Pathfinders answer to? Ryder’s good for business, but I know a diplomatic angle when I see one. ”
Now they’re getting somewhere. Sloane will grant Durant this much -- there’s a lot less of a run around in negotiating with her than there is the usual visitor, new to the port and carrying a chip too large for their shoulders. Those lot get nowhere fast, tossed out on their asses as quickly as they arrive.
Although Durant appears amenable, it doesn’t hurt to hear it said for exactly what it is.
“ You want the job, then? Assuming you accept, you’ll have both. I plan to go with you. ”
Is anyone counting on that? Not Sloane’s security detail, by the vaguely disapproving look she spots from Kaetus. All ignored, anticipating Durant’s response instead.
reyes vidal:
Both of Reyes’ hands rise in a placating gesture. Otherwise, he kept very still, as if he has stumbled across a viper’s nest and hopes to escape quickly and quietly. Business with the Outcasts can be messy, but it pays well.
But he will remember this next time. Sloane doesn’t seem to want friends here on Kadara. She just wants to be led to the docks and get her things.
He releases his breath, drops his hands to his hips and jerks his head towards the door. “This way.”
No, Sloane doesn’t want “friends” she can’t personally vouch for. Smugglers are about the worst candidates. The quality of their contacts is unknowable, undoubtedly including people who wouldn’t think twice about making trouble for her. That reality is always at the forefront of her mind.
By his lead, Sloane and her entourage bring up the back. If nothing else, the clear shot at Vidal if he goes to try anything ridiculous seems to temper her mood.
“ Where are we going? ”
vidal:
His lips twitch. Funny. Sloane’s crew of sycophants made her seem quite fond of ass-kissing. He’s not going to push it - not unless he wants to nurse a black eye tonight - but the more she thinks he’s just a brown-nosing peon trying to weasel into her good favor, the better.
❝My apologies.❞
Reyes holds up his wrist like he’s checking the time, watching his own omnitool download her requests. The parts she needed seemed simple enough to find - off the top of his head, he knows he’s already got a solenoid valve in his latest shipment. Not that Sloane needed to know that, of course.
❝Well… I can certainly try. You’d be surprised how few pressure gauges come my way, these days. I might need to go to Eladaan for some of this.❞ He deactivates his omnitool and starts coyly toying with the edge of his glove, glancing up at Sloane through thick eyelashes. ❝That’s a far trip, you know. A lot of fuel.❞
The narrow of her eyes sizes him up, looks for places to pierce and unravel, measures the weight of his words against something worth her time and resources. Vidal knows what she wants. He knows why she wants it. She won’t overlook that bargaining chip for what it is.
But Sloane knows where the filtration system has been compromised.
“ You, personally? Not one of your people? You’re suddenly invested. ” There is a warm quality underlying her words, some lingering amusement that nearly shapes them into a laugh. Not for him. At him. “ And a lot of stalling. Get to the point. Give me a price. ”
I was going to not make a pun out of that verse tag, but then you just see your opportunity. You take it, y’all.
V: COLLECTIVE OUTCASTS ( KADARA UNITED )
A location, a time, an offer to settle the dispute once and for all.
Sloane finds the darkness of a cave and a smarmy smuggler inside -- no, not a smuggler. The Charlatan. The challenge Reyes sets out is one Sloane is too eager to take up. If not for Ryder’s timely influence, their meeting would be fated to end in a blood bath. Instead, the Pathfinder stands as a buffer between their bickering and helps both sides to realize that Kadara struggles, and Kadara can benefit from their combined knowledge and power.
What happens when they leave that cave is an uneasy alliance and an unlikely shift in power. While they cannot put down a year’s worth of bad blood among the general populace, the closest ranks of the Outcasts and the Collective begrudgingly work together, Sloane and Keema as the public faces and Reyes as the shadowy benefactor.
Sloane’s decisive military strikes and transparent motives keep Kadara a free port. Reyes’ veiled cunning moves the right pieces to the right places to make it all possible.
Upholding the port as a cease-fire zone as they always have, they turn their sights to the Outlaws in the Badlands and the remaining Kett. If only due to Ryder’s influence, the construction of an outpost is reinforced with Outcasts and Collective security (with a cut of the profits, of course).
kandros:
Even now, he couldn’t help the little trill of pride he felt when she complimented him, and replacing the customary ‘thank you, ma’am’ with a respectful, but distant nod took real effort. His reflexes didn’t quite want to remember that he was no longer her subordinate, nor even on the same side. He set his shoulders, tight, and tilted his chin as she stepped down from her throne to offer him the explanation he’d asked for - another gesture he could still appreciate, even in the face of all of this.
His mandibles flared at the mention of his untimely departure from the station - still a source of guilt, even knowing how little he would likely have been able to change if he had been there, and how critical bringing knowledge of the Kett had been. But counter-terrorism had been his trade before the Initiative, and he would never be able to get away from the idea that he might have been able to do something, help to shore up the powder keg before it went off, and his eyes narrowed sharply when Sloane confirmed what he had suspected for months - that she hadn’t consented to his reassignment. That he had been lied to, if only by technicality.
“I think Addison’s exact words were ‘she didn’t disagree’.” A flash of anger and frustration, signaled by a sharp, reptilian clicking in the back of his throat. “Hydroponics wasn’t getting anywhere, rationing had started to take a toll - resource reconnaissance was pretty easy to paint as the best option. A way to bring people some hope, relieve the strain. Maybe if the golden worlds hadn’t been a wash it would even have worked.” But they had been, and it hadn’t, and he had come back to a station in chaos bearing nothing but even more bad news. “I would never have left if I’d known they were keeping you out of the loop. For whatever that’s worth, now.”
He quieted, listened to the rest of the story, and his mood continued its gradual tailspin - because he’d heard plenty of versions of this from plenty of different people, but Sloane Kelly was the only one he still trusted not to bullshit him, and driving home the knowledge of just how much of a shitshow the uprising had been all around stung. It was the feeling of mingled inevitability and avoidability that frustrated him so badly, knowing things should have been better, but also being able to see and understand why every party involved had done what they had done, whether he agreed with them or not. There had never been anything there but shades of gray and a whole hell of a lot of people thrust into positions they were ill-prepared or ill-suited for.
“I believe you.” He settled on after a long silence. “And I understand.” But the words didn’t soften him at all, and that acquiescence only lasted a few moments. “I don’t understand this.” He jerked his head toward the throne sitting on the dais, gestured expansively with one clawed hand, meaning to indicate everything, Kadara Port as a whole. “The racketeering, the drugs, the extortion. Your people are openly beating civilians in the street, throwing them to the klixen like trash. I get that the Initiative screwed up, I get that you stuck by the Exiles to protect them - I don’t get how that turned into whatever it is you’re doing now. Most of these people are still suffering just as much as they ever were aboard the Nexus, and I don’t understand how the woman I knew could allow that.”
“ You think I don’t know that? They lied to you. They lied to everyone. Some of us even started our own club over it. ”
As infuriated as Sloane was by the news, Kandros was a good officer, her best. If he had any indication something was amiss with the orders, he would’ve looked into it himself. That Sloane never doubted.
But it’s all news to him. In the brief beats of silence that stretch between them, Sloane isn’t sure what he’ll make of the spectacle that went on in his absence, if his position in the Initiative warped his perspective, too.
There’s some reassurance in that his answer ultimately won’t matter. After all, this isn’t a bid to sway him from the halls of the Nexus. What he deserves is to know who he worked for then and who he works for now. No more, no less.
For all he does understand, there’s much more she expects that he won’t. That he’ll question. Sloane isn’t disappointed. This is where their little reunion takes on a decidedly bitter taste, where the sound in her throat is a scoff and the sharpness of her eyes looks over him, past him -- where her boots retrace their steps from before and bring her back to the chair where she began.
“ My people landed on this rock with nothing to show for it. How long do you think it would’ve taken us to starve on what we carried with us? Don’t kid yourself: your colleagues sent us here to die. I wasn’t going to let that happen. ”
What else could the Nexus think would happen? Their decision was a prolonged death in unreliable cryostatis -- how could the Exiles trust they would ever be revived, place their lives in the hands of people who already held them in poor regard? -- or a death out here. At least on solid ground, Sloane would go out on her own terms.
“ When we found the Angara, we traded information. They made mention of a port the Kett sacked some time ago. This port. I reasoned with them, told them it was a matter of time before the Kett tracked them down in the Badlands and finished what they started. With their knowledge of the port and the firepower we brought, the Kett didn’t know what hit them. They didn’t expect the Angara to have allies.
“ When the smoke cleared, the port was ours. I’d seen the mess on the Nexus. I’d seen how the Angara were forced out of their homes. I knew it couldn’t work like it did before. So, a few simple rules. Disarm in the port. Don’t start shit. Pay your fees. Everyone contributes up until the point where they don’t. Then they’re gone. ”
The irony of it is never lost on her. This isn’t where anyone imagined they’d be six hundred years later, the new beginning they were promised. Another lie. The same incompetence that muddled operations in the Milky Way was bundled right along with them.
“ Spare me the morality lecture, Kandros. It’s easy to sit on the high horse when you’re not down in the mud with everyone else. Try asking your allies to answer, first. ”
What's your headcanon on Sloane's eyes? Was she born with heterochromia, or is one of them an artificial replacement?
Both!
Sloane was born with heterochromia. When vision failed in one eye following an on-the-job accident ( corrosive substances exploded during a pirate raid, half-busting the face plate of her helmet ), her replacement was made to be an identical match to the previous.
The cybernetic eye is reconstructed from the shell of her old eye with technology to replace the parts structurally damaged, such as the lens, retina, and the optic nerve.
It would’ve been simple to request that both eyes be made the same color, but Sloane is nothing if not a proud woman. She has no qualms embracing the parts of herself that others will find difficult to swallow. The scars, the ink lining her skin, the frown lines. Like hell was she letting anyone change that.
durant:
Ah, Sloane Kelly. History will have quite the split decision on her in the days long passing both their lives. She’ll be hailed an inspiration to those the Nexus would sooner see subservient beneath their boot, or a ruthless upstart that carved factions out of what was supposed to be a cooperative initiative. If Tann had any say, she would be a simplistic villain and nothing more. But seeing those sharp, hawkish eyes, finally? Seeing the way power is maintained with a spiked fist?
Well. They both know nothing is ever so SIMPLE.
Quinn’s smile here is close-lipped and polite, lacking the serrated bite of TEETH, but all the while her mind remains fixed on its own opinion. The very mind that still copes with burned out nerve endings and a bone-deep pain stemming from damage to her stasis pod as she was being thawed out–caused by the mutinies. Caused by HER hand. Quinn won’t forget that.
But personal vendettas can be inconvenient things. Especially if they get in the way of PROGRESS. Especially if they get in the way of trying to mitigate the damage done.
“I think we both know that it’s unwise to ever agree to anything without more details. Tell me what you need exactly, and I’ll see if I’m a proper fit.”
“ Busted nav systems, the kind that go in shuttles. Are you any good with them? If not, this is a waste of time. ”
As far as Sloane is concerned, that is as much as needs to be said until they reach an agreement. Either she can repair them or she can’t. Anything beyond that is excessive information before the job is even hers.
As it is, Sloane remains speculative at best. The Nexus needs Kadara. They need resources. And they need cooperation from the same people they exiled to get both. She’s aware of exactly what sort of bargaining chip she has.
She’s aware of exactly how futile it will always be for anyone to waltz in here and demand a diplomatic truce.
But individuals are another matter of interest. Ryder, while a pain in her ass, at least has a brain of their own. The rest of the awakening Nexus populace? That remains to be seen.
“ And don’t start thinking this is some grand opportunity to skim data for your Initiative brass. The systems aren’t ours. They’re salvage, like everything else. ” Salvage that needs to be returned to working order.
reyes vidal:
Ah, Sloane Kelly, ever the charmer. He can practically feel the warm and fuzziness rolling off of her—if warm fuzziness had a loaded gun and a room full of armed thugs with loaded guns, of course. Reyes plants his feet firmly, and he puts his hands on his hips. The urge to cross his arms is quashed quickly. He won’t show weakness here and now.
“You think I’d be here otherwise?” he asks, raising an eyebrow. There’s doing good business, and then there’s being stupid. And Reyes is not stupid. “I’d offer to help move it but… you seem to have plenty of fine men with strong arms here.”
“ And do you think I wanted a question answered with another one? ‘Yes’ or ‘no.’ It’s that simple. ” In a world that thrives off loopholes, Sloane knows only to accept no uncertain terms. All the would-be congenial charm only brings her one step closer to a headache.
Rising from her chair, a quick tilt of her head signals the Outcast guards to bring up her back. “ Remember that next time. Take us to the drop off. ”
emperor:
SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE
The Emperor has dealt with people like Sloane before. She will not be the last.
Kadara’s orange light pours into the warlord’s throne room, fiery light that does not reach the Emperor, light that dies. The area around her twists into unspeakable & mathematically impossible shapes. She studies the human woman with those strange eyes, those stellar death eyes.
Sloane asks for an answer that the Emperor cannot give. Organics except the chosen few, are not allowed to know what will happen when the kett are gone & she has an iron grip on Andromeda.
❝ There are things you cannot understand, things that are beyond your comprehension, ❞ she says. Her abyssal voice is nightmarish, it has plagued the minds of all who hear it, the sound of the deepest parts of the void. ❝ You will know only this: the Nexus is the beginning & the end. ❞
Sloane surmises one thing in that moment: better that it’s the Nexus then. Something in the weight of the words makes her wonder, but it isn’t a point she's interested in belaboring. Outside of the people she feels got caught up in the political mess that was their arrival, there isn’t a lot of love loss between the Initiative and Sloane, or her Outcasts.
“ Have your secrets. I’m sure we’ll see how they fit in soon enough. ”
Her gut hasn’t settled on what that means -- if it’s a good thing, if it’s something she wants to watch even as far away as from Kadara. Something about the Emperor keeps that edge of doubt alive. Sloane figures that’s a reason for that.
vidal:
What surprises him first is how this news managed to make it’s way to Sloane before him. This wasn’t on his orders - not that he wasn’t above sabotage, but he was smart enough to know that taking Kadara port would be useless if everyone was dead.
Roekaar, maybe? They’d done it before. Or could it be run-of-the-mill scavengers? His hands itch to investigate this, to see it fixed his way, but trying to ask Sloane herself for details would be a waste of time. It’s none of his business, as far as she’s concerned, and he knows well enough to pretend her authority is one he respects.
Reyes crosses his arms and leans on a hip, nodding. Already, his mind is trying to formulate a plan to get these parts to Collective engineers first - or would that look to suspicious, after she’s asked him first?
❝Kadara would crumble without you, Sloane.❞
❝What do you need?❞
“ Save it for someone else. I didn’t call you here to kiss my ass. ”
The shift of Sloane’s posture, favoring one side of her chair more than the other, does not reflect the hard cast to her eyes. What the problem at hand means to her remains unclear, but why wouldn’t it be a concern in one fashion or another? There are some resources the port can go without for weeks on end. A fresh, reliable source of water isn’t one of them.
The bright flare of an omnitool clashes with Kadara’s burnished light. Sloane’s fingers are an absent gesture against the interface, plans and specifications drawn up in advance.
“ Uploading the parts. Can you get them or not? ”
kandros:
He didn’t want to be here. For all that he’d wanted from the moment he’d returned to the Nexus to have the opportunity to see Sloane in person and ask her why, hear the reasons from her own mouth, he was no longer so sure that he wanted to hear them. The Initiative was going to be operating on Kadara, that was a foregone conclusion, and to do that required at the very least a tense truce with Kadara’s queen…and that title was where the problem lay.
He had understood many of the Exiles’ reasons, had been able to see clear as day where and how the Nexus’ leadership had fucked up - always easier to see that kind of thing from the bottom than from the top - and for all that he’d needed to do what was required of him, accept the ‘leash’ to keep the people of the Nexus safe, he had been able to sympathize, understand. And then he had actually seen Kadara. Just minutes ago he had watched two Outcast heavies beating down a pair of Angara in the street for failing to meet protection fees, and as he’d exercised all the restraint he had not to step in, he had brought his analysis down to the wire:
Either Sloane Kelly really was the woman he had once taken her for, and simply couldn’t do any better than this - or he he had judged her completely wrong, and he didn’t know which was worse.
“Pretty sure it was a political move - I was the only sec member of rank who wasn’t on the station when the uprising went down. No chance I was involved, no opportunity for the citizens to form an opinion on actions I didn’t get the chance to take.” He still hadn’t lost the habit of total honesty with Sloane, but his tone was tense, wary, and an undercurrent of anger buzzed in his subharmonics in a way only someone familiar with Turians would pick up on. “I make the most of it. Tann thinks he’ll get an obedient watchdog by bringing you up every time I disagree with him. Finally seems to be getting that that isn’t how Turians work.” He paused for a long moment, mandibles flexing, tense and unsure.
“Would it be worth asking why? I read the reports, but I’m having a hell of a time deciding who to believe, and what I’ve seen of Kadara Port hasn’t been encouraging.” Translation: I respected you, I wanted to believe in you, I called you my friend, and look where we are now.
“ No doubt it was. You were someone who couldn’t question their actions based on your own experience, all heard second-hand. It sounds like an opportunity Tann would leap at; it fits his style. The joke’s on them. What they got was a soldier who’s a blood hound when it comes to sniffing out bullshit. ”
This is what Sloane can appreciate. An open agenda. No run around, no double talk, two people leveling in a way hidden motives just won’t allow for. It’s one of the reasons she could rely on Tiran Kandros during her time as head of security.
It’s one of the reasons she doesn’t dismiss him and scoff at his attempts to piece her together.
Kandros asks because he hasn’t made up his mind, and he offers as much as he’s willing to question after. Respectability like that is a commodity she’s willing to deal in where he’s concerned. To a point, anyhow. His loyalties are what they are. Sloane isn’t here to sway him one way or another.
“ Why what? Why did I end up here? Why am I not in a sterile office, having my ear talked off as the whole damn station collapses around us? ”
One footfall, another. She steps down from the dais, moves closer. She’s not angry. Not yet. But there is a bitterness that coats her tongue like bile whenever she has to remember that all of this, every single last soul on this rock, could’ve been avoided. That it’s her they’ll paint as the convenient bogeyman when she’d nearly ended all of this.
There is a harsh, sharp laugh at the memory, a rasp and a mockery of the sound.
“ Because Andromeda was supposed to be a new start, yet here we are. We didn’t leave a broken system behind us. We brought it with us. The harder I fought against it, the harder they made my job. And it began with people like you. ”
Not his fault. That isn’t what her tone implies. Kandros wouldn’t have known. No, he was another pawn.
“ Who do you think sent you off station? How did they sell those orders to you? Because they weren’t mine. I never gave clearance. My best man, removed from my command when he was most needed, splitting our forces instead of looking to the unrest already among us. And that was just the start of it. Called away from my job to settle shit they should know how to do on their own and left out of the decisions that needed a seasoned hand. I spent most of my time fixing their messes until I couldn’t anymore. They saw to that. ”
Her arms fold and she stops some feet from him, her gaze immovable.
“ The mutineers were willing to negotiate. They were as exhausted from the fighting and the chaos as the rest of us. We were making progress. Then the triple-headed shitshow that called themselves leadership sent in the krogan to put them down. What was I supposed to do, stand by as people who had all but called a truce were attacked? I defended them. I didn’t bow to the Nexus’ piss-poor call. And I stood with them when they tried to bring us to heel. ”

“ Well, well. Look who they let off the leash. ”
Sloane fixes her gaze on Kandros from the moment he enters, a sharp curiosity coloring the edges of her expression, the furrowing lines and the scars. And then, in a gesture rarely afforded the commonplace visitor, she stands to meet. There’s history between them, two soldiers making the best of a terrible situation. That’s enough to make anyone a type of family, but she doesn’t rely on lingering sentiment. Assumptions get people killed.
“ I didn’t think I’d see your bumpy carapace again. Not since your promotion. For all the fuck-ups under their belts, at least the Nexus got something right when they chose you. ”
Gonna do it. Gonna make this a verse. Special thanks to @threelimit and @mendacitor for being the enablers they didn’t know they were. (8
I’m going to take a break / rest before I try to hammer out details, but yo, this is totally an open verse thing for anyone interested once it’s all finalized. And naturally, super want input from the Reyes squad and any part y’all want your guy to have in it. Same goes for any interested Ryders, OCs, etc.

“ Let’s skip the diplomatic bullshit. You’ve come to Kadara for a reason. ”
Nexus flunkies end up here all the time. Vetra Nyx trades out of back alleys and clubs, cloak and dagger, as if Sloane doesn’t know when she docks and departs again. Kesh’s grandfather is usually in tow. It’s always the same: they scurry around like rats and take their prizes back to their gilded hole systems away. The little pawns that Tann and his so-called administration move around aren’t her overall concern. They have their uses -- the promise of an economy is one of them.
“ I don’t care what that reason is. I care that you might have answers. I hear you’ve a knack for tech, and that’s precisely what I need. The details depend on your interest. ”
Independent contractors are fickle. Sloane knows better than to lay all her cards on the table before she has a binding arrangement to work with.
“ See? There’s my angle, all laid out and transparent. All you need to do is state your terms or walk away. ”
