โYouโre Annoyingโ.
I remember having a discussion with someone a while ago regarding whether or not calling someone annoying could be considered an insult. At the time, I didnโt think it could, and I still stand by that, though Iโm willing to see things differently if proven wrong.
From my perspective, an insult needs to be demeaning, scornful and rude to the other personโs intelligence, appearance or character, but calling someone annoying does none of those things. Hereโs an example:
Two people could be in a room, and one of them is constantly cracking their knuckles. This eventually begins to grate on the other person, who after a while says whilst disgruntled โyouโre so annoying!โ. Did they really just insult the other person? Or were they simply highlighting a habit that has gotten on their nerves? I believe itโs the latter. Calling someone annoying isnโt an offensive or a rude verbal attack.ย
Sasuke wasnโt insulting Sakura in any of these instances. In the first, he found her attitude towards orphans annoying, and who wouldnโt have? But it wasnโt a rude or demeaning remark. In the second, he used the phrase as a means to signify to Sakura that he does indeed remember that day by the bench. In the third, judging by his expression, heโs exasperated that Sakura is once again making him feel and recall the emotions that heโs tried so hard to shut out.
In my eyes, an insult is when you call someone a loser, when you call them pathetic, when you call them ugly etc. All these demeaning, disrespectful and condescending adjectives are what I consider to be insults. Annoying? Not so much. It just means you find a certain trait of theirs irritating; it says nothing fundamentally negative about said personโs character, appearance etc. Thatโs also a large reason why I donโt really agree when people claim that Sasuke constantly insulted Sakura (while using theย โyouโre annoyingโ scenes as partial evidence) as a means to hate on SasuSaku, because in actuality, Sasuke never once insulted Sakura throughout the entire story.
He said her ninja skills were below Narutoโs, thatโs not an insult. He didnโt say her skills were bad, just that she needs to improve. At the time, Kakashi could have stated that Sasukeโs ninja skills were below Leeโs. Would that have been an insult to Sasuke? No. Furthermore, this was directly after the Land of Waves where Naruto subdued Haku, so Sasuke couldnโt have thought that Naruto was unskilled,
He called her annoying 3 times in 700 chapters, but not only do I not consider this insulting, as stated above, but he only really meant it the first time, and even then it wasnโt scornful, just blunt.
He said โthereโs nothing you can do nowโ when referring to Sakura and Kakashi. He didnโt call her useless like so many people like to believe, (that wouldโve been an insult). He simply meant that given the current situation, neither she, nor Kakashi could do much.
Am I wrong in thinking this? Is calling someone annoying really an insult? I donโt think it is.
This 100% agree! I always thought when he was saying there was nothing she or Kakashi could do, that he was genuinely just saying that because it was a fact. Itโs just that he was really blunt about it which is how heโs always been. Itโs something Sakura and other characters have pointed out about his personality.ย
