The thing is, we already know Dean feels the same way. I know it’s something of a fandom meta trope that Dean is the repressed one, Cas is the openly emotive one, but look at how S11-15 kept touch-stoning, heavily, on how much Dean loves Cas. Look how long, how often, Dean has been emotionally bleeding out over Cas. Dean who wouldn’t give up on Cas when he was possessed, where Cas was the true heart bond and Amara the false thrall, Dean who who gave a mixtape to Cas, Dean who keeps leaving Cas voice mail messages, Dean mourning Cas like a widower, spiraling in grief over Cas, who called Cas his big win when Cas came back, Dean and Cas movie nights, Dean dressing Cas up as a cowboy, just so happy Cas was back, Dean on his knees in purgatory weeping and praying to Cas because he was so scared he was about to lose Cas. If we already knew Cas loved Dean like this, without having to see this great big mic drop from Cas, why does anyone doubt Dean feels the same way, but there was no time, literal Death was pounding at the door, Dean does struggle to say things right to Cas’s face, Dean was absolutely stunned, and scared, because if Cas was pouring his heart out at Dean’s feet like that, in this desperate circumstnace, Dean knew it sounded like goodbye, and Dean didn’t even get to catch his breath and figure out exactly what was going on he was so poleaxed so he could say it back to Cas’s face, and then Cas was gone. 

Cas is going too fast for Dean. 

There is another step in their arc here, it’s the other shoe, waiting to drop, let the series play out before judging, before you call it half-canon or assume Dean doesn’t reciprocate, because of how this went down. It was a lot, and Dean didn’t have a chance.

they were like. we will kill off castiel at the end of season 12. we will do this for no other purpose besides showing how much of an impact this death has on dean specifically, to the point where he completely loses faith and becomes suicidal. we will have a scene where dean prepares cas' body for the funeral pyre, alone. we will compare his grief and anger to how john acted after losing mary. when castiel comes back, we will only focus on dean's reaction. and then we will never talk about any of this ever again.

why lamp? why pizzaman montage? why season 10 confessional scene? why cain/colette parallel? why mixtape? why sprinting up the stairs in 15x19? why ALL of purgaytory? why instant flirting when they first met? why all the falling into a deep depression every time they lose cas? why the sheer elation every time cas comes back? why the “i said i needed a big win. we got cas back. that’s a pretty damn big win.”? why the dorky cowboy stuff from tombstone? why the look of hurt on dean’s face when cas (emmanuel) tells him he’s married? why “part of me always believed that you’d come back”? why “bert and ernie are gay”? why “blow me, cas”? why “it’s not like cas lives in my ass.”? why dean defending cas in 6x19 and 6x20? why “i’d’ve died for you”? why keep cas’ trenchcoat?  why “you got anything to say on the topic of dicks”? why “i’d rather have you, cursed or not”? why the awkward ‘hiding-a-boner’ scene? why “what do you say, this doesn’t pan out we head back to that beer and bacon happy hour about a mile back, huh?” from 8x10? why “you’re hoping castiel will return to you”? why “what about castiel? he seems helpful… and dreamy”? why the whole face-cradling grief when cas was stabbed in 9x03? why “you, on the other hand, looking good.”? why “i can see inside your heart. feel the love you feel. except it’s cloaked in shame.”? why “my shy, but devastatingly handsome friend”? why “how come you only want what you can’t have?”? why the prayer in 15x09 and the aborted “cas, i need to say something…”?

absolutely OBSESSED with the line "now you might be able to forget about that, but i can't!" because like. that's textual, that is the writers telling the audience there is a marked difference between how sam and dean are grieving in regards to cas specifically. this isn't just about the differences in the ways that sam and dean cope with loss; it's about the difference in intensity in dean's grief about cas vs. sam's. sam can move on from cas' death, but dean can't, and the question we are left with is why.
