Oh man we're actually recording again after what? An entire year?
We're not dead yet! Just, yaknow, taking a year off to reformat, plan, and also so Tyler can "work at CERN" or whatever smh smh But! We'll be back soon probably!
The semester is busy…so busy we haven’t had time to record or edit. :( Joe and Kelsey talked about your undergraduate chemistry sequence right before they were all bogged down by work. …
As midterms begin, listen to Joe and I talk about undergraduate chemistry. We defs didn’t record this at the beginning of the semester and then just not get it out until now. Nope. Not at all.
WAIT. is "expert citation" a pun on "export citation"? and more importantly how did i not realize this until now
hahaha yeah it’s a pun
If you look closely at the album art is an edited version of an export citation page
Hi! I love the podcast, but when Kelsey talks in episodes 5 and 6, the audio seems to glitch and stutter? Idk maybe it's an iTunes issue
Thanks!
And yeah, this is a known issue. I think it’s because my mic is super hot and sometimes syncs to random background noise that causes glitching. Unfortunately I live in nyc with a roommate and a cat so sometimes background noise in unavoidable, but I’m working on it.
It might also just straight up be an issue with my mic, which admittedly is not super high quality because I am cheap.

This week we talk about better living through chemistry (no actually though).
So if you want to hear me hold court about chemistry and biological applications while Tyler and Joe don’t really know what’s happening this is the episode for you!
(And if you listen all the way to the end the curling stones will make sense, trust me)
Despite the boring looking link this is the ACS Central Science paper about cancer drugs that we talk about on this week’s episode.
This is some classic chemical biology, so check it out!
The geometry of the urethra, however, may play a role in other activities of high functional significance, such as ejaculation
yeah probably
mammals urinate 5.6 times/d. Because the time to urinate once is 21 s, the daily urination time is 2 min, which can be translated to 0.2% of an animal’s day
okay then
Thus, the urethra is critical to the bladder’s ability to empty quickly as the system is scaled up. Engineers may apply this result to design a system of pipes and reservoirs for which the drainage time does not depend on system size. This concept of a scalable hydrodynamic system may be used in the design of portable reservoirs, such as water towers, water backpacks, and storage tanks.
I hope your shoulder is alright because that’s one hell of a reach
In the medical literature, the function of the urethra was previously unknown. It was simply defined as a conduit between bladder and genitals.
Okay but being a connector counts as having a known function....we know what it does, it connects things.
We filmed the urination of 16 animals and obtained 28 videos of urination from YouTube
stop creeping science. let the animals pee in peace
Stored urine may even be used in defense, which one knows from handling rodents and pets
Does one actually know this?
In mammals, the bladder acts as a waterproof reservoir to be emptied at a time of convenience
this is technically true yes, but again, an odd way to define the function of a bladder
Our findings reveal that the urethra is a flow-enhancing device, enabling the urinary system to be scaled up by a factor of 3,600 in volume without compromising its function.
That’s one way to put it I guess
It was always those with the least entitlement to food who suffered the most [due to famine]
........yes? people who can’t get food suffer from not having food it turns out
The dentine δ13C values for the adult individuals range between -21.7‰ and -19.5‰ (x = -20.5 +/- 0.3‰ 1sd, n = 13); the δ15N values range between 9.3‰ and 12.7‰ (x = 11.2 +/- 0.5‰ 1sd, n = 13).
I genuinely do not know what a negative percentage means in this context...
