Anchorless and Gifts
Singer, bassist and occasional songwriter for Propagandhi until he left to form his own band, it’s inevitable that John K. Samson would come up. Propagandhi and John K. Samson seem inseparable, even though they split forever ago; questions of Propagandhi would plague John K. Samson’s career long, long after he’d struck out on his own with pop punk darling The Weakerthans, and Propagandhi would hold on to their resentment of John K. Samson’s more commercial success well past the point where it was professional. Echoes of Propaghandi’s passive-aggressive backbiting at Samson linger on in online articles; in 2008, Canadian music blog Zed Equals Zee quoted Propagandhi’s about page on the subject of Samson’s 1996 departure:
“For the next 3 years, we rode the tail-end of the punk-rock explosion. When the smoke cleared and we were putting together Less Talk More Rock, it was becoming evident that Jordy and I, the rural metalheads, were cut from an entirely different cloth than little John-John, the urbane poet. He just didn’t seem to enjoy getting attacked by nazi-skinheads or sleeping on piss-soaked mattresses in lice-infested Italian squats anymore. Go figure.
“So shortly after we recorded LTMR, we shook hands, performed a mutual culling of the herd and like all good revolutionary anti-capitalists, got into an argument about money. Eventually, we worked out our differences and helped John into his proverbial Golden Parachute, which he has apparently, thus far, rolled into 80,000 worth of pennies with which to buy gourmet peanut butter and bread made of gold. Weird!”

Hey y'all! The split record I’ve been working on with Nick and Alyssa is finally finished and available for download! This is the first time that Loone has ever been at the nexus of the labors of multiple dedicated musicians. I’ve felt so honored to have them along with me for how intense a process it’s been. The strength they’ve lent to me at different moments has been unprecedented for me in certain ways. This record is the result of months of thorny tangles of love and work. Come and get it! It’s for you!

just wanted to ask a couple advice-type questions to unschoolers currently of traditional school age (or former unschoolers). reason i wanna stay anonymous is that my question requires giving a bit of personal backstory that i'd feel uncomfortable having tied to my identity. also dont wanna impose on anyone which is why i was looking for a community-type environment rather than one-on-one so ppl can feel free to choose whether they want to spend energy responding or not. thanks for your help btw
fair desires. sad it exists less centrally than would be easy for you. I can set you up w/ individual people that may be able to help. let me know!
i'm looking for a messageboard-type deal where people can ask about unschooling experiences to a community of people? if that sort of thing even exists
Posted your q to Facebook! These are the responses i got.“I guess they could possibly set up a dummy email address/skype name/something like that and unschooler word of mouth could find them somebody to talk to, but that might not be a large enough sample size for them”“There used to be a wiki page that had some activity on it. I never used it so I dont know if thats a thing anymore.”“The NBTSC Wiki would have been a great solution 10-15 years ago, but it gradually fell into disuse and was taken offline a couple years ago. Is this person interested in asking questions themself, or are they looking for somewhere to refer others to? Are they looking for experiences from parents who are unschooling their kids, unschoolers currently of traditional school age, or adult unschoolers?”“There aren't many places where one can ask questions anonymously--unschoolers have historically been wary of negative media attention, and unschooling is in a grey legal area in many states, so we tend to like to know who we're talking to. If your friend is committed to staying anonymous, their best bet is probably to try and find the answers to their questions through websites like Sandra Dodd's or Joyce Fetteroll. If they're willing to not be anonymous, there are many mailing lists and Facebook groups they could join.”You could start with those blogs like Sandra Dodd’s or Yes I’m Unschooled, Yes I Can Write and see where those resources take you. I also could talk to my friend who often acts as unschooling consultant to peeps and give you her email. Let me know how this helps.
are you vegan?
so nah. but like kinda. like, in the consumer identity sense yes. in the moralist political leaning no. I don’t think it is wrong to consume animals. In the US, I can get behind it fully for peeps living in cities. Visiting peeps who live in rural areas of the New England sort of made me realize how much of a city thing being vegan is, as in certain areas it is not particularly good for your health, or the earth, or like even possible. I am opposed to factory farming animals, although i don’t feel the same towards farms owned by individuals or families (which most farms are). I basically care about earth stuff and care about animals stuff about as far as it relates to earth stuff.
do you know of an online community where people can semi-anonymously discuss unschooling?
so, as i never unschooled or have really done like unschooling consulting stuff i am not sure. im in like too many facebook groups where unschoolers chat. i can dig, just let me know what specifically you are looking for.
do ppl not realize the direct impact gun legislation has on marginalized ppl or??? In terms of both likelihood of attaining firearms permits, needing firearms for survival, and being frisked and busted for illegal possession non-white poor people are seriously fucked over by gun legislation. Idk it’s not even about everyone arming themselves for me, I can’t and should never own a gun or my revolution would be over quick. If we want to talk revolutionary strategy I think community operated armories where ppl who are not at risk having guns on them are keeping track of shit and active training is important, but I don’t think revolt is really going to come from an armed vanguard etc…
