The Johanneskirche Protestant Church reflects on the water
in Stuttgart, Germany, August 1928
As I observe what I can concerning church history, I notice that we are hesitant to new ideas, which is not ALWAYS a bad thing. However I think that some generations that have come after a positive change have concreted issues which their predecessor did not intend to. While I love and have much influence by the Protestant reformers, I also hold to “Ecclesia Semper Reformanda” which means, “the church is to always be reforming”. Luther was onto something in his day when the reformation began, I stand by his breaking away from the RCC and what it was teaching about justification. But Luther too had an influence that requires a little bit of tweaking, an influence that introduced a different question than what would have been posed in the first century.
I feel the typical thinking in the church is that the reformers got it right so we no longer need think about what we believe.
One of my interests as of late is the New Perspective on Paul. Though not the originator of the view, N.T Wright is introducing challenges to what traditional Protestantism has been holding regarding justification. My knowledge in NPP is still young so I have not fully adopted it as of yet, but I can see myself going that way.
With that said, I have no convincing defense to persuade anyone of NPP, it may not be right. But I do challenge my Protestant colleagues to chill out and consider reform once in a while instead of rejecting anything on the basis that it disagrees with BOC, WCOF, etc. Live in the tradition of Calvin and Luther and keep reforming for Scriptures sake.

Martin Luther as the devil bagpipe(1535).
history meme. ten moments: Martin Luther posts ‘The Ninety-Five Theses’ on the door of the Castle Church of Wittenberg. 15 OCTOBER 1517. Officially entitled The Ninety-Five Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences, this document is widely considered to be the catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. It criticized the abuse of power by the clergy and the sale of indulgences, arguing that it was a violation of the original intention of confession and penance, and that Christians were being falsely told that they could find absolution through the purchase thus making the act of absolution a financial transaction rather than a spiritual one. (This criticism was prompted by the indulgence imposed by Pope Leo X, the purpose of which was to build St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome.)
