As we getting further into summer and scrapes, bruises, and bug bites appear seemingly out of thin air, there are lots of plants that can help out with natural first aid! There are many ways these plants can be used- teas, salves, oils, compresses, make sure to do your research for what works best each plants! —————- On another note, my shop was closed all month since I was out of town and for general maintenance so ✨✨everything in my shop is 20% off for the next week! ✨✨. More Crow Stickers and a few other items are in the mail and will be restocked soon.
When your memes and excessive bits of solarpunk knowledge get you a terrifying number of followers and now you have to behave. So new fucking bits:
The best time to get stinging nettles for fibre processing is during mid-Summer, with the nettles being about seven foot tall or higher just before they are due to flower. You don’t break at ground level, remove the leaves (which can be processed separately for any salves or foods). and remove the outer bark by beating with a pestle and breaking open (extra delicacy around the knots). You also need to remove the inner green/yellow woody part leaving the fibres behind. These can be processed like any other fibres after being dried. (If you want finer details on how to make nettle fibres I can do that.)
Oak galls can be used as a good ink, with marble galls being especially popular due to the high level of tannins in them. They are light, hollow, and spongy. To make ink, you grind up the oak galls, cook with water to bring out the tannins, then leave to cool overnight before straining. You put in gum arabic and rusty nails that have been left in vinegar to turn the ink black and make slightly sticky for ink usage. Only a quarter of a teaspoon is needed for a 30ml container.
Getting green natural dye is harder than expected because it’s a stronger colour. You will notice that yellow is generally more common along with red. However, you can use St. John’s Wort, Woad (dip fabric briefly in woad and then into weld), spinach, red onion skins, yarrow flower, chamomile leaves, and nettle to get these colours. Materials needs to be clean if dye is to take hold.
Growing mushrooms over a toxic waste site will suck up the toxins into their fruiting bodies but they will become poisonous in the process. Sunflowers have a similar effect with heavy metals and other such poisons in the soil; very useful to do if you live in a city and do not know the state of the soil. It is generally advised not to plant edible foods directly into the ground.
You have to so so careful when you’re buying small packs of seeds and using self checkout, at say, Walmart, because the scales are supposed to alert u when you add an item that wasnt scanned, but the seeds are so small that it usually doesn’t notice if you
accidentally
add two or three packs to your bag after scanning only one!!!
psa because I know how guilty I would feel if I unintentionally stole from a mega corporation while buying vegetable seeds to feed my self/community!!!
Also, make sure you double-check your pockets and bags! It’s really easy to wind up with a few seed packets somewhere on your person and just walk out without anybody noticing, especially since they never have any kind of anti-theft device. Be careful out there!

Spring is peeking it’s head out from around the corner. When I wake, I can hear the birds chirp and sing to one another outside the window. The snowy days are melting into rainy days, green peeking out from under the blankets of white. The trees are not yet budding, but when I walk outside I can feel sun on my face and my cheeks warm. The world will soon be showing signs of growth; renewal. Things will be alright.
