Sakuracon Stargaze Panel Notes!
This is a 2-parter, there's a lot of notes I took lmao
• Concepts called upon stampede and the manga for character designs in Stargaze, had to find a balance between the two
• Meryl's design was a major change, wanted to make her appear more adult
• Sato watched Stampede as an audience member
• Boots for Meryl and Milly's cloak outfit have spikes on the bottom!!
• Had to think about all aspects of the character (shoe soles, coat linings, etc) while designing characters because 3D requires these to all be fully-developed—can't simplify like you should do in 2D!
• Concept artist helped with establishing character backgrounds
• Meryl and Milly were originally intended to know each other as students before they went their separate ways meet again in Stargaze!
• Meryl is relatively well-off, Milly is raised in the Desert and can survive anything
• Milly specifically lived in a "Wam Fishing" village
• Wam Villages established by people who didn't want to fight over resources with other humans, and tried to make it work in the desert
• Hoppered had a lot of impact on the story AND worldbuilding
• Hoppered is special because he had a lot of extra elements that helped built his character—a lot of small items
• SPOONS AND BOWLS USED TO FEED VASH ARE DIFFERENT PROPS IN BOTH SCENES
• Hoppered's design and props are intended to help convey information about the setting
• The decorated plate hoppered uses for Eriks (og) have an illustrated Wams design that looks like traditional pottery designs, but they're not visible in-show because the food and Hoppered’s hands covers them 😭
• Indigenous culture popped up around Wam's over the 150 years—particularly the silk harvesting
• Prop designs were vital for conveying information and history for the worldsettting
• Vash's model was enhanced for stargaze
• Shirtless Vash Model was made for Stargaze, Stampede's was hand-drawn key animation
• A lot of attention was paid to shirtless Vash's hipline??
• Wolfwood's technical test is noticably more tan than the final l show lol
• Watanabe showed off multiple different looks at Wolfwood with a wide-open mouth and said "Open wide, Nicholas 😃"
• Like. There is *a lot* of open mouth Wolfwood.
• Sato: "It's impressive that Nicholas can get laughs from the audience just by standing there. Quite a man!" (He was standing a-pose superimposed over the ship bio dome lmao)
• Showed off workflow! Storyboard, Posing (timing), Dubbing (refinement), and final corrections (expressions and lighting)
• Final colors are greatly brightened and more saturated after lighting corrections
• Sometimes the storyboard doesn't match the final scene
• Initially assembled all of the gun-ho-guns for the ad to show off all their faces lol
• JP storyboards are still paper, but Americans will use animatics or other methods. Orange uses a storyboard-specific program (toonboom)
• Ep 1 Storyboards had to be completely redrawn multiple times!! (my suspicions are confirmed for there being behind-the-scenes issues with ep 1)
• Nightow's own correction was that he wanted characters to be trigger-happy with their guns lmao
• Meryl and Milly's S2 introduction was initially supposed to be longer
• Old woman dropping her water was initially supposed to a guy stealing her water, and the girls getting it back
• Initially they were wearing the jacket, and didn't remove the hoods until they get the water back—more intentional ambiguity and cinematic quality—but it got cut
• There was supposed to be a scene of Milly finally dumping out Roberto's cigarette ashes that Meryl had been keeping in the car (this was intended by Sato, didn't make it in)
• Vash's storyboard poster has him doing double peace signs lol
• Whole crew was reliant on the storyboards—Composer uses them, animators uses them, Voice actors record off them!
• Sato is always impressed when the super-rough boards turn into fully-fleshed 3D
• Zazie was originally supposed to pick up the skull, but Sato wanted the scene to have more impact so she switched it to Meryl
