there are so many underrated parts of iol but i think what takes the cake is the play. like i feel like we all collectively just... forgot about it? like ive literally never seen a single post about it? but it’s such an iconic era of the book and its so funny but it also has so much character development for elliot and its just. so good

we have elliot painting all of his friends. adara being a drama queen. the whole gang going to commander woodsinger’s office to settle and argument about KISSING and her just. not having it. myra painting elliots chest. elliots whole character just being a dramatic villain. the whole sunborn clan just casually being there watching it. the fact that luke was literally only doing it to be with elliot. elliot telling luke the kiss with adara didn’t have to count if he didn’t want it to. luke giving elliot his jacket. elliot being too fucking stupid to tell that luke is in love with him and being an angsty fuck about it. 

and so much more. its so good

in other lands is so funny because its like. you read the description and you go into it thinking its gonna pretty much be your standard fantasy book with the qUiRkY protagonist and clear plot and then you just get 

- the most angry little ball of childhood trauma and humor of a main character

- himbos galore

- “ELF BROTHEL”

- you get halfway through the book and its funny and nice and then all of a sudden SAD

- mommy issues AND daddy issues

- snorting at 2am because the jokes are ELITE

- you think there will be chapters but no. you are wrong. there are five CHUNKS of book and if you get the right edition one short story

- chaos. just chaos. 

and honestly i love it

i just finished aurora rising and all i have to say is it should have been gayer. much gayer. there was so much potential for GAY. and there was just. not enough. like cmon man you can’t tell me cat wasn’t some kind of fruity

also i get that finian is bi but like... i really don’t like the way it was executed. the never actually says anything meaningful about his sexuality–it’s always just the punchline of one of his jokes. which, yeah, was funny, like the “yeah, that place is harder to get into than my prom date’s boxers” and other stuff like that but... there was never more to it???? honestly it just kinda rubbed me the wrong way that finian’s sexuality was used ONLY as a punchline. like if there was more to it than just jokes I would have a totally different opinion but like. no. there were just some random gay jokes sprinkled throughout the book and nothing else. 

(that being said, i haven’t read the second book, everything here is just about aurora rising)

ok but can we talk about how FUCKING UNDERRATED commander woodsinger is????

i’m like half awake right now so i can’t recount Every Single Thing that makes her so great but the way she’s so supportive of elliot and at the same time So Done With All His Shit always cracks me up... and she’s got so many good lines... like the time elliot blows up at dale on the way back from the harpies and elliot passes her and instead of asking him if everything’s alright she’s just like “keeping everything very cool and professional, cadet schafer” 

theres obviously much more but i can’t quite fully picture any of the quotes right now so just.... live with this for a little while and i’ll probably add onto this later

has no problem demanding information or correcting people

ahead of his class but only in the things he cares about

has no problem being Serene’s trophy boyfriend because he doesn’t really Get toxic masculinity or social norms

pays attention to detail and nuance except when it comes to his own life

has no idea what anyone’s actual intentions are ever

impulsive

hates running. gets really good at running.

very kind to people he sees at a disadvantage, could not give less of a fuck what the privileged think of him

okay his whole existence screams “autistic” so i’m gonna stop and just move on to personal HCs

chews on stuff. i know i should probably stop projecting but i just think that he would totally be the type to just put Anything in his mouth and then wonder why he’s getting strange looks

cannot accurately pinpoint emotions or physical sensation on the first try
