“Hello, you’re small like me,” the blonde smiled, marveling at the other girl. She’d never met another child before, so of course she was going to be curious. “Are you a baby girl, too?”

“Like Mama and Daddy’s metal egg,” Alya reasoned. “Mama said it was like a family, you have to put the pieces together.” She sat down by Millie and tilted her head. “How do you know the picture?”
“What’s a metal egg?” That didn’t make a lot of sense. What sort chicken laid those? Millie didn’t know though she was happy to see Alya sit down, her face lit up with a smile.
“Well.. the box as a picture to follow from.” she looked around before she found it and pulled it back and showed it to her. “This one is…a picture of a the world and animals!” Mama had given her lots and now, she could have many more pieces. It took a while but it was fun. “This one… has three hundred pieses!” she giggled.
“A metal egg is an egg made of metal,” Alya said just a little bit patronizingly as she took the box lid and looked at the picture. “There should be a unicorn. Daddy says that’s his animal from his country, which is there.” She pointed at what should be the northern part of the British Isles. “Mama has a lion. I have…” She thought for a second. “An airplane. Airplanes aren’t animals but it’s where I’m from.”
Millie’s nose scrunched up at the answer but it did answer her question. “Where does a metal egg come from? Metal birds?” If there were metal eggs, why not metal birds…but she had never seen one of those before.
Millie looked around, her lips pursing together. “We could add them! I have crayons. I can add a lighthouse. I’m from there and…my mama said that she’s from somehwere called….. tri-skeleton.. but i don’t know where that is.”
“You’re not supposed to draw on it if it’s not a paper or a tabbet,” Alya chastised, meaning tablet. “Unless you’re Daddy. Daddy can draw wherever he wants. I don’t know why. Mums and Dads have different rules.” Alya picked up a piece of the puzzle and immediately put it in its correct position.

MIllie’s head rose from her puzzle pieces to the voice, a new voice that wasn’t her mom or any of the big ones that they lived with. Though she smiled, and nodded. “I’m Millie” she patted the space near her and the loose pieces “Are you new? Are you gonna be my firend?”
“Daddy says you’re my playmate. I’m Alya. A-L-Y-A,” she explained as she walked over and looked at the puzzle. “I never played this game before. Can you teach me?”
“i think that still means friends,” Millie decided thoughtfully. “This game, you have to make the pictures whole again from the little pieces.” She handed one piece out to Alya. “I like this games. Mama also showed me that there’s some with lots and lots of pieces.”
“Like Mama and Daddy’s metal egg,” Alya reasoned. “Mama said it was like a family, you have to put the pieces together.” She sat down by Millie and tilted her head. “How do you know the picture?”

Perplexity blooms strangely on Beth’s face, charmed as she is by the little girl’s easy manner and difficult speech ~Beth grew up in a day and age where such a thing was harder than it is now, until she gave up speaking at all if it wasn’t to her brother, and even then most of their conversation had been nonverbal~ but there’s something a little familiar about the cadence. And the more the girl talks… oh. Yes.
There’s a thin smile that Beth offers the girl, something in her chest hitching in a spasm, before she breathes out and nods. “Oh, yeah. I know dem, ya mama an’ daddy.” She wasn’t sure who Enoch is but she remembers her promise and an old friend. It’s been a while since she’s seen Fitz, hasn’t kept up with everything happening when she retired. She holds her hand out to the little girl and glances up toward the cabin. “Dey come wi’ ya, lil bird? Or did ya steal da car an’ come all da way up here by yaself? An’ ya got a swimsuit?”
“Daddy says I never leave his sight,” Alya said. “That means he always sees me. He’s over there.” She pointed over at a car, from which Fitz was slowly walking with a big smile. “Daddy, I found Miss Beth from the picture!”
“You’re very good a’ findin’ people,” Fitz said as he got closer. “Just don’ run away like that again, not everybody’s nice like me an’ your Mum.”
“And Miss Daisy. She’s very nice. She said I was the cutest baby nuhhd. I don’t know what nuhhd means.” Alya tilted her head very much like Simmons did when pondering something.
“Nerd means you’re very smart an’ like to learn things. You’re very good a’ learnin’ things.”
(Facesof19999) A little blonde girl, no older than three and a half, ran up and hugged Beth's legs.
Beth’s first instinct is to lash out, to meet the rush of a strange presence with the full brunt of her ...gift. She hadn’t been expecting company, most people didn’t know where the family cabin was, and she hadn’t heard anyone driving up. But a half heartbeat of instinct later, she realises that the person assaulting her is a child. A small one, all blonde hair and grasping limbs. Not one she’s familiar with, most of the summer people have returned to the city and back to their real lives. And she owns enough acreage that even if the girl was a neighbour, she’d have to come a long way to get here. She stops polishing the western saddle, and brushes her hands off on the legs of her jeans before she disentangles the kid and hunkers down to be closer to eye level.“Heya, keiki. Are ya lost?”
“I’m not lost,” she said, looking up, and looking at Beth like she’d said something absurdly silly. “Daddy said you’re going to teach me how to swim.” She had an adorable lisp, and an accent that was a strange blend of English, Scottish, and American, which was hard to make out given her age, but certain words made it evident. “Daddy teaches numbers and stars, Mama teaches about fishes and books, Enoch teaches history because he’s old.” She smiled again. “And Miss Beth teaches swimming.”

FINDING NEMO (2003) Dir. Lee Unkirch & Andrew Stanton
While Alya is still too young to understand mental illness and Fitz’s days are almost exclusively good ones, there are some bad days once in a while. Alya has nightmares about the sharks from Finding Nemo, so Simmons has told her that Fitz has sharks in his head too. Alya then tells Fitz she’s sorry about his sharks, and gives him her plush cuttlefish to help him hide from the sharks in his head.
((Pride month so sharing my little picrew portrait for Enoch))
Fitz: have you ever had pets?
Enoch: not until quite recently
Fitz: what were they like? I didn’t see one in your house
Enoch: he is peculiar and generous. He has vividly pigmented eyes, brown hair, and has intelligence well beyond his kind, a rare thing to combine with his kindness. However, he is often quite sad despite my best—
Fitz: hang on are you talking about me?
Enoch: yes
Fitz: I thought I was your friend, not your pet
Enoch: are canines not man’s best friend?
Fitz: I am having some very mixed emotions here
