many people give the nfl a lot of shit for the injury and concussion rates but like. the nhl has a very comparable rate of injury and concussion and doesn’t acknowledge it + has a much worse culture around it. the nfl is by no means perfect but they are working to improve the gear to help players (see the guardian helmets for example, as well as helmet designs per position) meanwhile the nhl doesn’t seem to give a fuck about it’s players’ safety at all as we’ve seen time and again.

now think very carefully about why the nfl may be viewed as more violent and injurious as a sport..

Since it’s coachplayer o’clock allow me to introduce you all to my favorite insane relationship between a player and his coach in all of CFB: Oregon’s 2022-2023 QB and HC, Bo Nix and Dan Lanning

God they make me ill. Anyway

For those unaware of Denver Broncos QB1 Bo Nix’s college history he started out as the QB at Auburn, where he went primarily because his father was an Auburn QB and had essentially raised Bo from birth to love Auburn and only Auburn. Basically Bo is a tragic nepo baby

Same number and same position for the same school GOD the narratives drive me insane. Crucial to the lore is the fact that Bo is the eldest son in an archetypical southern evangelical family. Also he’s just as Christian as you’d imagine, to the extent that he got married at age 21 to an Auburn cheerleader. Really something HAS to be going on with him, he can’t be that much of a paragon of all-American Christian virtue

Anyway he goes to Auburn, has a pretty decent freshman year and beats Alabama in the iron bowl, and then everything gets much worse from there and culminates in him leaving the school he had dreamt of playing for since day one and transferring to Oregon, where he and Lanning quickly become rather close

Just imagining Lanning taking in this SEC reject who got kicked to the curb for not living up to the impossibly high expectations he placed upon himself (has to live up to the example set by his dad, after all) and growing to genuinely admire him for how mature and capable he is as a leader and a person is so… oh btw here’s some real things Lanning has said about Bo

Offering your QB who you view as equal parts surrogate son and additional coach (and also babysitter which. I don’t even think I have to elaborate on the implications of that actually) a second chance, one might even say redemption, on your team… yeah. They only had two years together but it was a fascinating coachplayer-heavy two years
