“Celestial Sphere” Overview (4-21-17 ver.)
changed a bunch of stuff, trimmed some more stuff down, and added even more things!
The Celestial Sphere is a personal OC universe focusing on the various interactions between angels, demons, fae, and other monsters in their various realms. The major settings are Heaven, Hell, Limbo, and Purgatory. CS has multiple, intertwining story arcs.
Angels are the divine beings created by God that oversee the cosmos and protect Earth.
Years ago, God departed to the farthest reaches of the universe and left the angels to their own devices. After the angels recovered from this unprecedented blow, they became fiercely independent and more than a bit power-hungry. Fanning out, they settled almost all rocky bodies in the Solar System, and renamed themselves the Interplanetary Holy Empire.
Angels divide themselves by Order and then Rank, and then Title. The Order shows what “type” an angel is and what vague purpose they serve. Most angels are born as Guardians, however they can be born into any Order. Angels use a system of 20 separate primary Ranks that declare how powerful an angel is. (In archaic times, an angel would ascend the ranks by killing a Hellborn (or noble) demon, however as relations with Hell have shifted this practice is no longer necessary, and ranks are decided through a number of different factors.) A Title is a declaration that that angel has particular dominion over a specific concept/place/group/thing/etc. Angels that have specific Titles are considered the top authority on their dominion, and angels often compete to gain/maintain their titles.
The Angel Ranks are as followed:
Great Princes (Archangels)
Princes (Top Dominions/Principalities)
Prince-Electors (Serve the Princes [who serve the Great Princes aka Archangels])
Ensigns (angels start out here)
The angelic Orders are as follows:
Fairies are considered a “neutral” force, in between holy and unholy. Most “true” fairies are evolutionary ancestors to the original Rebel angels. The vast, wild realm of Limbo, surrounding the first ring of Hell, is divided between the constantly-warring courts of Seelie, Unseelie, Crow Maidens, and Swan Maidens. Limbo is a sort of buffer or a “safe zone” between Heaven and Hell.
When Lucifer and his Rebels fell, many ended up in the massive crater formed by the impact of Lucifer’s fall. The impact formed a small mountain range surrounding the top edge of the crater that cut off the angels of (soon-to-be) Hell and those that landed in Limbo. Those angels opted to continue living in Limbo due to its plentiful resources and their society there flourished. Over millions of years, the angels of Limbo slowly evolved into what are now “fairies” in order to suit the wild environment of Limbo. Most lost their feathered wings and angelic divinity, however Bird Maidens retain their avian characteristics.
Unlike in Heaven, which is ruled by the Heavenly Council and their subordinates, or Hell and the Archdemons, all of the courts in Limbo are monarchical. The Maidens are matriarchal and ruled by queens; the Morrigan (Crow) and Queen Guinevere (Swan).
Demons are the “opposing force” to angels, and are considered embodiments of vice. Demons are mostly descended from fallen angels or primordial monsters. Most live in Hell, although some live in Limbo, or on Earth as ‘humans.’
Hell was originally populated solely by fallen angels, until proto-demonic spirits caught wind of the rebellious angels and began flocking there. These new residents helped grow Hell from the shelter for fallen angels into a major force in the Sphere. Nowadays, Hell is a technological marvel and is highly advanced and densely populated.
Demons, like angels, are categorized by Rank (with an altered order, however):
Great Princes (Archdemons)
Typically, in the past, demons ascended Rank by killing or otherwise deposing a demon of greater Rank, however this practice is quite barbaric and led to a highly unstable government.
Hell was created from the impact of Lucifer’s fall, in which he hit the ground of the then-empty Limbo and created the funnel-shaped crater of Hell. The displaced earth shifted into an inverted “mountain” underneath Limbo. The rings of Hell are city-realms magically ‘suspended’ on top of each other within the ‘funnel.’
