Once again, some minor context from my fic: Fox went away for university and spent some time outside the neighbourhood (doing work before he decided 'it wasn't for him' lmao) before returning home to help his aging mother.
During that time, either in his last years of University or freshly graduated, he met Adder (a common european viper/adder).
Now, Adder is like... In his 30s maybe when he met Fox. Both are consenting adults but it is still a little iffy considering Fox was like 22. The fact that Adder's type is 'pretty little things' doesn't really help his case.
Not set in stone yet- but I imagine Adder was probably a senior employee at a (newspaper/editorial) company that Fox was interning at. But yes it started with stupid dumb workplace crushes and several threats to call HR on both of their parts. I won't say Adder was like Fox's boss or anything, but there was certainly an element of uneasy power dynamics involved.
Adder is he's awfully similar to Fox, except he's got a macabre aestetic and energy to him. Fox's type is pretty much those who've got an edge to them, so if you were to say Wolf has a rough edge (upon first impression and glance), then Adder's got a smooth edge, but an edge nonetheless (no he is not a serial killer- but I would imagine he does a lot of... outsourcing to get meat. So unlike Fox he doesn't like to get his hands dirty).
So, they're quite similar (senses of humour, mannerisms, views on predator and prey, even sense of style in terms of both liking to dress formally), which is the reason they got together in the first place, but it's also kind of the reason why they broke up (being mirrors and all and- well- Fox didn't like what he saw in Adder- and there is an irony to that that Fox is well aware of which makes him loath what they were even more). It wasn't the healthiest relationship, I'm sure they both hurt each other. Fox was probably quite controlling and possessive, and Adder was extremely demeaning and, often infantalised and objectified Fox, and acted as though he was entitled to him. Which is, not good! Terrible even!
For example (minor warning for sexual implications), Fox loathes the nickname, but Adder often called him 'Glove'. It is, as Fox always recalls Adder telling him, "it's shorthand for Foxglove, it rhymes with love, and you certainly fit like one." And no matter how many times Fox tells him how vulgar that is and that he doesn't like it, Adder never dropped it.
Anyways- Adder probably wrote poetry, and would ask Fox to recite it for him. Their way of bonding, and one of the most intimate things they'd do together. It was probably how Adder confessed his feelings, getting Fox to read a poem he'd written for and about him. But Fox would have been the one to actually ask him out.
It was an on and off relationship, with both of them having partners during their break ups, but in spite of that, Adder would have been Fox's most 'serious' relationship before Wolf. The only reason they even broke it off for good is because Fox got a letter from his mother, asking him to come back. An excuse written to him in cursive ink and stamped with a seal of approval, if you will.
And Fox would tell you, or really, tell Wolf and Rabbit, that he's quite fussed about how Adder didn't even try to get him to stay, or offer to go with him. He just said "alright" and that the time they spent was worth it. Adder saw him off at the train station, and didn't even stay to watch it go. "He was just as eager to get rid of me as much as my mother wanted me to come back" or, something a little bitter like that. "He was probably bored of me. And I completely blame him, hah! It's not like he gave me much to work with anyway. Abysmal poetry. I put more colour into his life than anyone else, but there is only so much you can do with a blackhole of a canvas. It just keeps eating away at whatever you give it."
I like to think Fox misses him anyway. But only a small, small, very small part of him.
The two of them would have made much better friends than partners. But the neighbourhood would actually be screwed if the two of them got along so they're better off as bitter exes who ended things off unceremoniously, and not with a big bang either.
Alternative title: Wolf finds a way for making Fox actually listen to him.

Ps. As Fox is always cooking stuff or insisting about having afternoon teas & picnics (plus the 'lets eat the neighbors' thing), I like to headcanon him as a sweet tooth for all things sweet. I like to imagine that's yet another reason he is deeply insecure about his weight too... Good thing Wolf doesn't seem to mind 🥹
This is a character study I made about Fox for myself, because unfortunately he's the most difficult for me to draw in my art style. I'm still not sure if I like the front angle or not. Still, he's much better now than how I drew him the very first time!
There were supposed to be more (like different expressions), but I shifted my focus on other things instead oops
