Inktober Day 17: Stay
I’m having feelings about Hawke again this day 🥲
Tell me I’m wrong.
Thinking about how Varric is so desperate to protect the inquisitor during Tresspasser. Thinking about how he's willing to give the inquisitior and whoever their original family was a place in Kirkwall even if it means breaking all the rules. Thinking about how Hawke at that time is either dead and gone, locked away in the fade, or in a place where only rumours are coming out and none of them are good. Thinking about how Varric sees Hawke in the inquisitor: a hero, a good story, and how for once he just wants a boring ending for his friend (and for Hawke, please, a miracle, just one more miracle that'll keep Hawke safe still). Thinking about how Varric probably thinks he failed Hawke and couldn't keep them safe and how he will now do whatever he can to make sure history doesn't repeat himself that he's just chucking titles and land and whatever he can at them to make sure they're cared for. I just. Thinking about Varric. And crying. A lot.
I think the thing that makes Varric so compelling as an unreliable narrator is his motives. Because when it comes down to it every decision Varric makes in his telling of The Tale of The Champion is made out of love. He's not doing it to be maliciously deceitful or to make himself look better or whatever else. He's doing it, when you get down to it, because he loves Hawke. He loves Kirkwall. He loves his friends. He wants to protect them. And this is evident in the fact that dai reveals that Varric knew where Hawke was all along but this is ALSO evident in all those little moments. At the end of Legacy where Varric gives Hawkes dead mother dialogue to comfort Hawke with. During All That Remains where Varric gives Leanda a chance to say she's proud of Hawke. In his final meeting with Hawke at the hanged man where he tells Hawke that it was an honour fighting beside them and being their friend. Every little deception in the novel and its telling is tinged in love.
Someone out there probably needs this in their feed.
Mentally I am here
Varric Tethras as a character is wild. He calls everyone by a nickname. He writes trashy romance novels. He’s a prolific liar. His family got them kicked out of the dwarf kingdom for rigging dwarven Wrestlemania matches. He has fingers in literally every crime ring in Kirkwall. He lives in a pub. He named his weapon after his absent girlfriend with whom he has a restraining order. He denies his involvement in keeping the wizard police away from his friend’s illegal magic Urgent Care. He’s the mom of the friend group. And he does this all while being four feet tall

I REALLY want to consolidate as many of my side muses into my multi (collectivexsouls) but I love the Fadedhawke url. I don’t wanna let it go.
More skin, huh? Hawke's mouth was stuck open for a moment. It's a good thing Varric hadn't seen the blush on her face. Hopefully.
"Oh, I don't know. You may have missed my formative years...Hawke-the Seductive Years." She spread her hands across the air in front of her as though pulling the title for a sign.
"Has a great ring to it, though doesn't it?"
To be honest it sounded like one of Varric's romance serials. Not that that was a bad thing. She'd made him promise to give her first look when he was done with the next chapter. It was just getting to the steamy part.
"...and you can't navigate because of my ass." she joked. "I could always put you on my shoulders." Hawke strode past him and took her place ahead of him on the little path she'd found. "Should be able to make camp up there," she pointed between the crook of the two mountains. "-then you can...uh....catch your breath."
He was awfully red and winded.
The sound that comes from Varric is not elegant or smooth. It sounds somewhere between a snort and a coughing hack, his face growing redder by the moment. If he had any input, her seductive years were far from the past.
He'd watched the way their entire party had fallen in love with her him included and the way everyone's eyes followed the apostate as she moved lazily through town, as if she hadn't even had a purpose.
And she always did.
"Oh yeah? Just breaking hearts in Ferelden left and right, huh? Is that the real reason you left? Had to escape all the forlorn wanna be lovers?"
Varric's voice had only just recovered from the fit he'd fallen into, and while he meant it to sound teasing, it only came out harsh.
"You put me on your shoulders, Killer, and I'll cut all that hair off your pretty head."
Toothless threat, and he knows that she knows it. Maker's tits, she knows he knows she knows it.
"I hate camping. I'd rather be back in my bed that smells like piss and sweat than lay down on the ground again. And these mountains -- is this even worth it, Hawke?"
"Pffft!" Hawk made a noise with her mouth but smirked. "Oh please Varric. You cut off this glorious do? More likely that I'd shave your stunning chest hair..."
That chest hair. To card her fingers through that golden mass.
She'd watched the barmaids long after him in The Hanged Man every time they hung out there, unabashedly drooling after the bard. Back then, she'd laughed, poked at him with her friends about it. but she'd become very protective of him.
After all, who didn't fall for the dwarf with the silver tongue.
Hawk waved her hand as they walked, absentmindedly sidestepping a log in their path, glancing back to make sure that it didn't trip up her stocky travel companion.
"It damn well better be worth it. If that noble doesn't pay up when we get back, I'm sicking Aveline on him. I know you hate camping, but how else am I to get you all to myself?" she said with a loud laugh. Joking? Sure, but only partly. Varric was one of the few people she trusted herself to be....well...herself around. But only when they were alone.
Character: Okay, so here’s the plan—
Me: *trying to come up with their clever plan*
it seems like everyone i follow on tumblr is posting copious amounts of dragon age, and i feel it is pertinent to say that i’ve seen a lot of things: an ostensibly traitorous egg person, a horrific bull human hybrid, romantic british redcoat dances, pirates, magic, violence, soft porn of every orientation combination, sad white haired anime elves…yes, i’ve seen it all. what have i not seen? even one single dragon.
