I know, because I remember.
I remember feeling a switch flick in my body upon the Banishment's successful cast. I remember the world around me swirling and moving me to another plane. And then i remember the melting.
I saw my own skin melt apart, slide away, freckled sky blue mixing with the black of my blood, revealing the stark white bone beneath. Even that started to fold, but by then i couldn't think about anything besides the pain.
I remember trying my best to fly away, to change shape and scamper on four legs, to do anything, and being met with emptiness where a well of flame used to live.
I remember reaching to the sky with my final conscious moments, seeing a bird flying overhead and knowing that the last time i would ever fly had past.

When i remembered this, i had been in a human body for 5 years. I had lost my memory of home, of my life before, and was left with only the vague knowledge that i was elf-adjacent and my name was similar to Atlas, but not quite. I knew i liked the color blue, but liked wearing green more. That was all.
It took me 3 years to remember my self-schooling in the Autumn Court's Royal Library, my hard-won transmutation magic, my mothers' faces.
