My absolute favorite detail across all of X-men is that Charles and Erik both like The Once Future King.

A storybook, and not just any but a reiteration of one of the oldest out there, and one they likely grew into themselves reading (Charles through his childhood and Erik likely later in his adult life).

I think it’s a great reflection of both what they think of themselves and what they think of eachother, both undoubtedly seeing themselves in Arthur and Lancelot and their cause in the analogy of peace being like a candle in the wind (in slightly different ways but the same coin regardless)

It’s a quiet sort of understanding between them that for as much as they bicker and fight, they are both shielding this candle from the wind in their own ways regardless of means or method. I think it’s a big reason they’re always coming back to each other because no matter how much Erik proclaims himself a barbed-wire man fighting for justice and Charles preferring his wit and tongue to propel mutant-king forward. At the end of the day they’re both fighting to keep the flame, the fire, alive and well, they’re fighting collectively for hope.

It’s not quite preservation of themselves and their people, (I don’t think either are much capable of preservation of themselves self), but something akin to two Sisyphus-s rolling a double-the-size rock up a hill, never acknowledging one another aside from the occasional brushing of hands and the carrying of extra weight when the other gets tired until they’re strong enough to take it back.
