Chewing and gnawing on the irony One Piece continually shows with the main characters where they're doing objectively kind and helpful things and that's what gets them in trouble with the law. It's the selective application of criminal justice. The bias and room for corruption built into the system itself. It's delicious. It's horribly relevant. I'm obsessed.

This post was inspired by this screencap of people discussing Zoro being a wanted criminal over a shot of him protectively cradling a little girl

But it can also be with things like Usopp finally getting a wanted poster and the incriminating picture is of him freeing a bunch of slaves. Things like Nami's treasure stash being legally taken by the same marines who let Arlong terrorize her village for years. Things like Luffy's bounty going up after doing the government's work for them taking out Crocodile and saving a whole country from years of drought. And of course, things like the very first plot point, where Zoro is criminalized not for his ruthless kills (those were legal) but for protecting a child from a petty marine's untrained dog.

I'm sure others could add more examples but you get the gist. It's brilliantly done and I eat it up every time. Especially because it's still not black and white. Pirates do awful things. Marines do good things. But in the end, the only people truly free to do everything they believe is right are those who have already been deemed criminals.

the specific tragedy of marineford's events aside ace is just a wild character to watch. he's the coolest big brother on the seas. he's a fucking dork. he's hated himself his whole life. he goes around tits out all day every day. it's because he's tattooed his devotion to whitebeard on his back and wants everyone to see it. he can solo a buffalo with a metal pipe at age 10. he cannot shut up about luffy even when he's in jail waiting to die. he's narcoleptic. he's a serial dine-n-dasher. he's the patron saint of daddy issues. he learns manners specifically to thank shanks for saving luffy. he's kinda shit at them. he doesn't run from fights. he doesn't let himself run from fights. he doesn't think he CAN run from fights. he crashes a party on buggy's ship out of nowhere and steals the food. he infiltrates a marine base and doesn't even bother to hide the very recognizable tattoo on his arm. he steals THEIR food. he immediately blows his cover because he decks the shit out of someone for dissing his captainfather. he's still eating while he gives them the slip. he goes to kill kaido and bonds with his son instead. he knows how to make a kasa. he forgets he's fire and keeps accidentally burning them. the narrative doomed him and yet his love and the love for him refuses to die. the world loathes him on an existential level. he chooses to be kind to the people in it, even so.

I really like fictional couples that actually enjoy spending time with each other. It seems like such a simple, mundane thing. But, often, I see fictional couples who are completely enamored and dramatic and willing to die for each other, which is fine. But like… do they enjoy hanging out? Do they have private jokes and would they be friends even if they weren’t in love? It feels like such a basic thing, but it’s something that I actually don’t see that often. And it feels so refreshing and honest compared to these over-dramatic romeo and juliet-esque romances. Just two people who become good friends and because they enjoy each other’s presence so much it grows into a strong attraction. It feels more real and tangible than two attractive people meeting and “falling in love at first sight” - like, of course, you fell in love at first sight! You’re both supermodels! Sorry, can’t relate.

I think what makes Luffy different from most other shonen protags is that he's not meant to be an audience insert. You don't want to be Luffy, you want Luffy to randomly barge into your life and start throwing hands with your asshole boss.

Aadhya and Liu are such A-tier friends for El. Just their refusal to be scared of her, or put off by her snappishness. Even if it's for practical reasons, that's exactly what she needed on so many levels. El loves them, and they love her back, and Like Hell are they leaving her behind.

If Golden Enclaves has one flaw, is that you CANNOT convince me Orion "I Want To Be a Hero Like El, Also I Almost Killed a Bunch of Kids Who Tried to Hurt Her" Lake would EVER forgive Ophelia for murdering a whole class of graduates OR for getting El kicked out of the Sharmas.

I absolutely refuse to believe it. He would never forgive his mom for that level of murder, or for making El's life so miserable. My headcanon is that in the chaos post-ending, Orion is not fully up to speed with Deepthi's prophecy, or on how mommy dearest created him.
