Starving grad student running a small Redbubble shop (initially for side income, now for fundraising for my Palestinian friend). Made this blog to share my designs, found here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/fairiedance/shop My best friend (an absolutely brilliant scientist and compassionate social activist, seriously the best person ever) is a Palestinian grad student studying in America, and a lot of his friends and family are being affected by the genocide in Gaza and the fallout in the West Bank and surrounding areas. I have started selling Palestine related designs in my shop. EVERYTHING I RAISE he sends to his loved ones to help in various ways as the situation progresses. Designs not related to Palestine have been removed from my shop for now (probably for good at this point).

A new version of an older design, found in my new shop here. I updated فلسطين حرة to حرروا فلسطين, roughly a change from "Palestine is free" to "make Palestine free".

Between the big boost @todaysbird gave me early on and the amazing promotion from jabaddams on Instagram, bird lovers have driven a huge amount of the traffic my shop has gotten. I am forever grateful for this, and as a huge birdwatcher myself I am so touched by how amazing other people in the hobby are. Another bird lover on my Instagram suggested budgies so that's why I made these little guys.

As I move the art to the new fundraiser shop I've been making some updates. I added some lettering to this one. The new shop is here, I'm still adding more stuff to it.

As usual my art is free for anyone to use for activism purposes (posters, social media posts, organization logos, etc) just please do not try to sell it.

Redbubble never responded to me and people are stealing my fundraiser art now :(

My husband and I are in the process of moving so updates will remain sporadic, the fundraiser will keep operating as normal though. I've been missing my friend so much since I moved away from the school and I'm very happy I still have this way to support him while I can't be there in person. My sunbird design made it into this video from an amazing birding account on Instagram, jabaddams! The design is in my shop here.

My shop is a fundraiser for my best friend who is Palestinian. A quick update, he is doing okay these days (well as okay as is possible given the circumstances), the money raised most months is going to his extended family and friends who are in more difficult situations in Gaza and the West Bank, most of his immediate family are in fairly safe places right now thankfully (Jordan, safer parts of Lebanon, some safe-ish parts of the West Bank mostly). My friend is on track to finish his PhD sometime in the upcoming academic year, I am very proud of him. His partner is living somewhere pretty safe right now and has work lined up in the US soon so she should be back with him shortly which will be very nice.

This is what the design looks like, it was created from a previous sunbird design and the keffiyeh from my dove design, my current best seller:

I also just want to mention how happy I am, as an avid birdwatcher, that the couple times this shop has gone a little viral it has been because of birdwatching people sharing my bird related designs like this one. Birders are really the most wonderful people, thank you! And thank you to everyone who has purchased my work! We really appreciate the help.

I finished my PhD now and I will be moving far away to join my husband at his postdoc and search for work soon. This should be an exciting time but I'm quite sad I can't be here for my best friend anymore. Right now I see him nearly every day, we always go to the gym and I usually make him eat dinner. I worry he won't eat enough when I'm gone. The stress over his family and friends in Palestine makes food difficult. Fortunately his partner will be back in America (if all goes okay) in a few months so he should have more support soon, he does a lot better when she's around.

I will continue running this fundraiser indefinitely after I move. My friend sends the money home to support his friends and family in Palestine and around the rest of the Levant who are being hurt directly and/or financially by the attacks on Gaza, the raids and economic devastation in the West Bank (they're dealing with a lot of shit there right now) and the collateral damage in surrounding countries (for example one month's earnings went to basic supplies for the displaced in Beirut during the worst of the bombing in Lebanon). If we ever run out of people he knows personally to help (not likely any time soon) the donations will go to a relevant fundraiser or charity of his choice, wherever it seems most useful at the time.

This is not end to grad school we imagined. I'm so proud of my friend for how he's handling everything though. Still doing his activism in the face of all the government threats, and still doing incredible research despite all the setbacks. He's the strongest person I've ever known.

Right now the situation is looking increasingly desperate in the West Bank, 40,000 people are already displaced and we're scared to see how far things are going to escalate. Thankfully most of his immediate family are safe for now.

Three hours to go until the ceasefire. I'm with my Palestinian friend at his lab, we're just working and waiting. I'm incredibly proud of the strength and composure he's shown in the face of this genocide, he's the most amazing person. Let's hope the ceasefire lasts, and the West Bank gets a reprieve soon too. Here's a poster I'm liking right now, with a reminder to feel free to print and use my stuff for anything so long as you are not profiting from it:

I want to thank everyone who has supported my fundraising shop. We received so much support, it's been so heartwarming! I really hope we get to spot some of my shirts, pins, etc at protests and rallies in the future. Even if the ceasefire holds this is far from over, we need to keep the pressure on!

I will continue to run this shop for the foreseeable future, there's so much damage to recover from in Gaza and Lebanon and the raids and economic restrictions in the West Bank are showing no signs of stopping. I would like to help him support his family as long as I can, and if that ever becomes less necessary I'll switch the shop income over to a relevant charity of his choice.
