Little sketch I made of Hop's growth.

I headcanon general people's perception of Hop's appearance throughout his youth as an "ugly duckling" of some sorts: He was surely an overly energetic child and unapologetically loud and clumsy, which reflected on his countenance. He had messy hair, kept very short so it didn't become a problem.

This would explain why such a friendly and outgoing kid as Hop was so lonely before Gloria/Victor... In Twilight Wings it's shown to us that Hop can actually go to Wedgehurst quite easily and, by the way he talks to multiple people, he knows that place quite well and has no problem interacting with everyone. Which made me think that the main factor keeping kid/pre teen Hop from having true friends (or a social life outside his familly) before Gloria/Victor was not him living on such a small village as Postwick, but people in general were not drawn to him due to his chaotic energy.

(Thinking about it, not even Leon was popular with kids his age before the Gym Challenge... His only friend was Sonia, and they bonded over their mutual love for Pokémon. The same happened with Hop years later. Energetic people's problems I guess.)

Then the gym challenge comes for Hop and we all know how humbling the experience was to him... The post game shows us Hop had slowed down and became more thoughfull. I highly hc this change of behaviour makes Hop more approachable in general and I'm sure this started to gradually reflect on his likeness, specially during his adolescence.
