when he was fifteen, butch deloria stitched three snakes on three jackets, one each for him and paul and wally. the snakes were the same but the markings weren’t, and with just one look, you’ll be able to identify the wearer.
but that was then. now, at nineteen, the jacket butch is wearing has the snake with brightest greens (paul’s favorite color) and it feels heavy on his back. now, butch looks at freddie in a jacket that’s a size too big, and remembers how naked wally had looked when he stormed out of the clinic wearing only the vault suit, how like a snake that had just shed its skin.
now, butch toys with the gun he stole from security, wondering what’s outside the vault. wondering, as he flicks the gun’s safety off and on and off again, if the doc’s kid is still alive, if they’re still wearing his jacket (the one with the sharpest fangs, dripping poison), and if they even knew how to take proper care of it, or if the leather had already begun peeling, and his stitches had already frayed and unraveled.
I think the people who try to go into Fallout 1 and 2 as blind as possible and then complain about the game being obtuse and hard ignore the fact that the games come with very long detailed manuals and crpgs have always had sites and communities dedicated to sharing information about the game
I started a new stardew save on a whim and kent is making me think of the poem "bluey in the genocide." like it's not that deep bc kent lives in a fantasy world and fights another fantasy race. but it still positions war as something that happens to other people elsewhere and the only ones affected are returning soldiers and their families. there might be one or two incidental lines about the war affecting supply chains? but overall being at war does not seem to affect the people of stardew valley. it's a neutral background event. and I think it's true to the reality of rural America that you will get a guy who fights in the army and comes back jumpy but it's something to examine in fiction
I saw a post recently asking why you can't raise livestock for meat in stardew and I think that one's inherited from harvest moon but there are things new to stardew that just go unquestioned. I don't know that it's possible to make a truly neutral "cozy game" bc everyone brings their own baggage to their art. there's always something there that the creator hasn't noticed
James being so Christian he is quoting the bible to a literal baby feels so weird to me unless he was ex-enclave and then it makes perfect sense
Why in fallout do so many of the women still act like being beat up by a girl is embarrassing? This is a world where women run major crime operations and fight to the death in blood sport arena matches just as often as men do.
There continues to be this weird tendency for writers to want to make both post-sexism societies and keep the tropes that come from existing in a sexist society at the same time. Bethesda is especially bad at this but they’re not the only ones.
I think about that line in Skyrim that one of the NPCs in Whiterun says. If you’re playing as a man she’ll say “what? Are you intimidated by the sight of a strong Nord woman?”
Lady, half of the bandits out there beating me up are strong Nord women. Who have you been talking to and how high are they
we could have some dead money shit goin on, but your heart is too honest wrapped up by the old world blues. now you walk a lonesome road

Apolitically killing bandits and savages in my video game with no messages
asked the skyrim bandits why they were living in a cave and they explained the war effort has buried the economy so they can't find work and lost their homes. I use my shout to blast them across the cave and find a preeeetty nice sword among their belongings
The bandits and savages attacking on sight with innocent corpses in their lairs are part of my apolitical worldbuilding to avoid all messages in my video game

"They made X thing canon in the show" "Oh the show confirmed that..." "Courier six's canon identity is..." "The real ending of fnv is confirmed to be...." SHUT UUUUUUUP!!! It's an RPG!!! A ROLE-PLAYING GAME!!!!! No show or dev can ever truly decide what's the true ending and who the courier is because it's all up you. YOU!! The player!
It's you who decides the fate of New Vegas and the only real ending and identity there, is the whatever's going on in your current playthrough how is it hard to grasp
i wish fo4 in particular had seasons. like i have my winter/snow mods i turn on when i want, but fo4 specifically had the perfect setting to do proper seasons cus MA in real life is a place that, unlike a lot of the other settings we see, has distinct and noticeable seasons.
i also say it cus i’m just so curious to see how certain aspects of seasons survived outside of holidays. are there still ppl who clear out snow in more developed settlements/how have snow plows been repurposed? are ppl ice fishing? what ways do ppl stay warm? there should’ve been a mechanic that caused your character to slip on ice if their luck and/or agility was low enough.
