you know sometimes i tell myself fallout 3 is really not that good and i just personally like it so i have an inherent bias towards it, but i will always stand by that shitty little game having such good character moments. everywhere you go there are characters interacting with each other, talking about their families and their issues. i was surprised to find that the family in the blood ties quest is FULL of random interactions. they all talk to each other and have intricate relationships with each other down there, and they did not need to put so much effort into that. i find myself just idling around the different locations to listen to what everyone has to say to each other all the time, and it makes the game feel really rewarding to replay as someone who actually cares about the capital wasteland/whats going on there

Just finished Fallout 3's main quest and I'm struck by how much it just sucks for the Lone Wanderer, especially without Broken Steel. The whole deal with Vault 101, getting exposed to the general fuckery of the wasteland, seeing their father die quite horribly right in front of them, being exiled from their home by their closest friend, and then to cap it all off being forced to fucking kill themself. The angst potential is ludicrous

Me when that Caravan Driver said "Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a Nuclear winter"
Me not even a minute later when he kept repeating and I realized they chose to make a silly line that NPCs repeated have a deeper and more disturbing meaning that is tied to one of the most devastating moments of the show
Do you think the Lone Wanderer would ever develop claustrophobia after leaving the vault and coming back for trouble on the homefront?
"I've outgrown my childhood coffin" kind of thing.
The bible verse referenced in the Lone Wanderer’s birth date drives me so crazy sometimes. It makes sense for the overall world, but to have that be the label to their birth is crazy.
One of my favourite dynamics in fallout 3 is that of Roy Philips and Mr. Burke. Out of everyone in the entirety of Tenpenny Tower, Burke is the only one Roy is willing to spare. There’s a level of respect for each other’s skills knowing it’s mutual destruction if they actually try to fight each other. Roy doesn’t want trouble in his new territory and clearly sees Burke as the bigger threat; backtracking when threatened and beginning to call Burke “Mr. Burke” after being told the plan to blow up Megaton. With Burke it’s a little harder to say for sure because his actual strength and backings aren’t fully revealed. I think he has a respect that almost borders onto admiration. What he wants to do isn’t that different to what the ghouls did to his own home; it’s a mild case of irony I’m sure isn’t lost on him.
Note that this is only fully the case with a Lone Wanderer that invaded Tenpenny Tower with the Ghouls before talking to Burke about the bomb. I feel some of it would still apply when Burke is the only the one Roy spares if the ghouls are let in passively; which is so dumb to me because Herbert is so much more ghoul-friendly than Burke.

i actually really really like the amount of detail we get about the lone wanderer i think its the perfect amount. you grew up underground not understanding that youre different until that difference forces you out. you have to save the world even though no one will care. you have to save your home even though they wont forgive you. you never had a mother and you never knew your father. but you have to complete his works. you have to save his world.
you have to become your father, essentially
