Codsworth - Hancock - Gage - Nick Valentine

Codsworth : Codsworth is so relieved that his mistress emerged from the Vault not only alive, but capable of coaxing forth flora and clean water again even from this dreadful wasteland.

He can finally devote himself to tending living flowers again — not rusted hedges and radioactive weeds, but proper greenery.

How utterly delightful to have a purpose once more.

Hancock : As you might imagine, his first instinct is to check the condition of his Jet — by taking a dose. He is then amazed to watch the flowers grow, quite quickly for flowers, yet slowly enough to appreciate all their magic.

And there, in the middle of the field, stands this person, smiling wide, amused by his amazement.

The chem rush fades, but the flowers remain.

“I couldn't never have wrapped my head around the idea that such a miracle could actually happen. It’s… downright amazing. Brother/Sister, it’s a whole different vibe from those hubflowers and carrot flowers. Books ain't got nothin' on the real deal, that's for sure.”

Sosu seems nervous, laughing softly as they lowers their head.

“Hey there, no need to hold back. It’s just… downright fantastic. What’s the deal with keeping this power under wraps, huh?”

His companion looks him in the eyes, more serious now.

“There have always been many wonderful things in this world — and look at what mankind does with them. Just imagine, for a moment, if the Brotherhood got their hands on an abomination like me.”

Hancock gently brushes the petals of what he is convinced is a poppy, and a quiet sadness settles in his heart.

“Oh, I’d just love to set you straight on that one…”

But the world is not ready for such an exceptional being — and perhaps never will be.

Gage : They were heading toward Bradberton to verify a rumor that Super-Mutants had taken control of the area. So close to their newly conquered Nuka-World, Gage wants to make sure nothing threatens their territory.

He knows now that he can rely on Sole to handle whatever danger circles their kingdom.

But the Super-Mutant troop is, perhaps, far more imposing than expected. At least, that’s what he concludes when the horde closes in on him. Bullets fly in every direction, and his temporary cover won’t shield him for long from the fate waiting just beyond it.

Then, suddenly — shouting. The Super-Mutants are caught off guard by something unseen, and within moments, Gage no longer feels threatened.

He can finally check whether Sole survived.

But Sole has done more than survive.

Sole stands in the middle of a field of thorns — enormous thorns — upon which the Super-Mutants are impaled.

That field didn't exist a moment ago.

And now that he thinks about it, Gage remembers seeing strange briars conveniently sprout all over Nuka-World before — only to disappear again as if they had never been there.

And there stands Sosu in the center of the thorn field, wearing an expression far too innocent to be believable.

“Mind filling me in on what just went down?” Gage asks, not entirely convinced he’ll get a straight answer.

“Uh… I can order plants?”

Gage lets out a long sigh, rubbing his temples, then pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Mind to explain the truth now?”

His companion shrugs.

“There are so many strange things, so many unusual experiences at Nuka-World. And you’re surprised that thorns rise from the ground to hunt Super-Mutants?”

Gage has no counterargument. He nods slowly.

“Well, ain't that just the luck of the draw? They waltzed in right when we needed 'em most. Alright, let’s keep moving. I can't shake the feeling that those things could turn against us at any moment. We gotta stay sharp and watch this… strange occurrence.”

Sosu smirks and nods back.

“Yes. I completely agree that you should keep an eye on it.”

Nick Valentine : There’s a new tenant at Home Plate.

A discreet one.

The last discreet tenant had turned out to be trouble, so Nick keeps an eye on things.

It doesn’t take long before he notices something odd. Not because of noise. Not because of visitors.

Because of flowers.

Real flowers.

Red petals spilling over the balcony railing. Not wasteland weeds. Not mutated vines.

Pre-war roses.

And no one seems to care.

He brings it up to Piper.

“We've got a mayor who could very well be a synth in cahoots with the Institute," she says, arms crossed, "and you're fretting over a few red petals landing in a filthy alley?”

Nick shrugs it off in front of her, but it bothers him.

A mayor who might be a synth? Sure. That’s dangerous. But known danger gets watched. Prepared for.

The worst threats are the quiet ones. The innocent-looking ones.

When Ellie finally stops listening to his list of reasons why the new Home Plate tenant doesn’t add up, Nick decides to stop talking.

He’s a detective.

He’ll investigate.

He waits for nightfall. The market quiets. Guards grow lazy. Fewer eyes.

He slips to the service door and pops the lock without much effort.

Which, honestly, makes it worse.

Who lives in Diamond City and doesn’t bother with decent locks?

He steps inside carefully, placing his feet to avoid the worst of the warped boards.

He barely takes ten steps before the floor rises beneath him.

Light floods the room, blinding. Something thick and alive coils around him — not rope. Too strong. Too warm.

It tightens.

There’s a sharp crackle. Heat.

He lets out a startled grunt.

“Nick?”

The light dims.

A silhouette stands before him. Backlit at first, then clearer.

Vault blue.

Nora.

“Is it you? But— oh.”

Of course.

Pre-war roses.

Seeds from the Vault. Maybe more than seeds.

The pressure around him loosens. He looks down.

Vines. Ivy. Thick stems retract into the floorboards as if they were never there. He raises his gaze on his friend again.

Nora looks embarrassed. Not guilty. Not defensive. Just exposed.

Nick studies her.

He’s spent his life chasing logic. But logic doesn’t cover everything in the Commonwealth. Not anymore.

“Why?” he asks.

One word.

A dozen questions.

Why hadn’t she told him she bought the place?

Why hadn’t she mentioned she could make nature grow like this?

Where did that power even come from?

How had she kept it from everyone?

Each question was a weight. Each answer… nowhere in sight.

Each answer could only led to more questions.

She exhales slowly. “I didn’t know how to talk about it. Who would understand? Who wouldn’t want to cut me open to see how it works?”

He nods and lowers himself into a chair at the small kitchen table that still standing — barely.

She sits across from him, watching his face like she’s waiting for a verdict.

“I gotta admit,” Nick says after a moment, “it ain’t even the weirdest thing I’ve come across out there.”

Relief flickers across her face.

“You don’t blame me?”

“What, blame ya? Why's that?”

“For hiding… all that.”

He considers it.

“Life’s tough enough without givin’ folks more reasons to be scared of ya,” he says. “I get it.”

Then, quieter:

“But this power o' yours? It’s somethin’ real special. You should put it to good use.”

“I’m trying.”

And then it clicks.

Settlements suddenly producing real crops. Clean water. Green patches where nothing should grow.

No amount of elbow grease brings the soil back that fast.

He smiles — faint, but real. “I’m real proud to be your friend, ya know?”

I assumed that you imagined Fem Sosu in such a situation, since you say *her*. So, I take the liberty of introducing my own OC—even though in my fanfics it doesn’t have that kind of power—because I think it would be funny if such a fantastic power belonged to such a... bitch—idiot, according to Nick. (And I soooooo love when Nick call Nora *idiot*.)

Cait : (After being cured) "Damn! Who dared put chems in my water?"

Preston can’t help laughing.

"It's not the first time someone has reacted like that when they first visit Sanctuary."

But the principal concerned, for her part, grunts under her breath.

"Nobody used chem on you, Cait; you’re perfectly capable of doing so yourself."

Almost immediately, the former slave explodes in anger.

"Listen, you little..."

"Stop! Stop that immediately," growls Preston. "Nora! Cait! Stop squabbling like two idiots right now! Cait, Nora has... powers. Accepting it can be challenging. But it’s a blessing. So that’s it.”

"Okay, this time I’m sure someone put something in my water!"

And as if Nora wanted to be sure that she would nail the discussion, huge ivies came out of the ground with a gesture from her hand, wrapping themselves around Cait and producing many flowers.

“WHAT THE F—

“Nora!” groans Preston.

“Now she can be assured,” says the Sole Survivor with a machiavellian smile.

Curie : “Fascinating! Absolutely fa-sci-na-ting!”

The robot spends so much time studying each manifestation that Nora almost stops them altogether so they can actually do something useful.

But then, Curie became depressed.

Nora is then obliged to make the decision to leave her at Sanctuary under the care of Codsworth, who is really thrilled to talk about it all with a fellow robot also in admiration of such a talent.

Danse : At first, he doesn’t even notice. He is astounded that the Commonwealth holds such miracles, but he doesn’t make the connection that it’s always around Nora that such things happen.

But sure as hell Haylen, for her part, does realize it.

“How do you do?” she asks Nora, who doesn’t like the attention drawn to her.

“What do I do?”

“The flowers! I saw it growing just as you snapped your fingers!”

Nora close-up in a daunting silence, not liking at all to have the attention drawn to her.

“May I Inquire as what is the subject matter,” asks Danse, intrigued by the exchange.

“Nora is capable of—

“No! Not at all,” cuts the concerned.

Danse became suspicious.

“If you behold any significant specifics that may—

“No information that concerns anyone!” Nora cuts again swiftly.

Haylen frowns but adds nothing. And it could have been okay. One day, even with his Power Armor on, a deathclaw is poised to cut Danse in half. Nora then raises her hands urgently in the air, and a gigantic ivy grows all around the beast, leaving Danse completely bewildered but with no more doubt about the origin of the miracle.

“THIS is significant specifics that absolutely have an impact on me!”

The paladin widens his eyes in disbelief as Nora growls under her breath that she should have let the monster eat Danse.

“You possess the ability to achieve greatness, and nevertheless, you have decided to preserve this knowledge from me!”

“Listen, Danse. You are a good guy and all. But let's be real; if you ever communicate this kind of, hm, information to anyone, they will just think you are crazy. And I will deny it all.”

Danse frowns and watches Nora closely. And he is really certain that she will do all she can to discredit him if he ever shares this peculiar information with anyone. He sighs deeply.

“I comprehend. But can you, at least… engage with me on this matter? I find this utterly captivating.”

“As anyone that gets it…” she lets out with annoyance. But then she seems to retract, thinking about the fact that Danse is, after all, a kind person that can be an ally in her situation. “Okay, I will. However, I will only do so when I feel ready. And when I am tired, you stop asking.”

“Agreed.”

Deacon : His first reaction, he gets it all alone at the top of a hill nearby the vault 111 because he is already stalking Nora when she gets out for the first time.

Seeing the desolation around her, she falls on her knees, raises her hands up above as if she were lifting something, then waves them again and again, and suddenly, the spy witnesses something he never saw before.

Green.

Vibrant, tender green.

All around the woman, nature began to grow; grass, plants, flowers, and even the trees got back to life.

The spy, after the first—really long—aftershock, told himself that anyway, on this one, there is no fucking chance no one ever believes him.

Dogmeat : The good doggy doggy is completely thrilled, runs everywhere, barks happily, comes back running even faster as the grass tickles his belly, and jumps to lick the face of Nora, who laughs.

Elder Maxson : The Elder of the Brotherhood speaks passionately, reciting the homily he knows and believes in. So many reasons state that Danse must die.

Now.

Whether it's from his hand or Nora's, he doesn't care, as long as the insult of that which he thought of as a friend all these years is dead.

And the young woman is fulminating, rumbling, and arguing against each and every one of his statements.

He had totally expected it. As he expected out of a disagreement with such a woman, despite the validity of his arguments, to feel almost compelled to submit, to find a way out of it to their both satisfactions.

However, he remains unwavering, maintaining his authoritarian foothold, firmly rooted in his convictions.

Until his feet no longer touch the ground.

He widens his eyes out of surprise, lowering them on a vine that is wrapping around him—his waist, his torso—tightening more and more with each passing moment.

He looks up again at the other two, as if to check whether they see the same thing as him.

But what he sees are the already remarkable pupils of Nora which no longer simply give the impression that they shine with a plutonium-like green hue...

They literally shine.

Truthfully.

Maxson opens his mouth to protest, question, and express his dismay at the situation, but the vines wrap around his throat.

And that’s when Danse finally reacts.

“No! Cease this at once, Nora!”

Maxson doesn’t understand. Why is the synth addressing the women?

“Stop!” he continues to plead, begging. “You cannot take his life! That’s not how you should do it! Not like that!”

Nora growls, concentrated, not letting go of her mental grip for a moment.

“He was ready to have you executed just now!” She protests.

“You are different from him!” He still argues, his tone pleading. “You need to cease this immediately! If you ever felt anything for me, even for a fleeting moment, you need to put an end to it right now!”

This time, Danse seems to reach a sensitive chord in the young woman. She lowers her hands, and the vines release their grip on Maxson, who is staggering, taking large puffs of air that were so sorely lacking a moment earlier. Coughing and struggling to regain his senses, he turns, astonished, to the other two. But the moment he is about to ask, Nora suddenly becomes very pale and collapses in Danse’s arms. At the same time, the little life in nature left around them seems to be faltering and disappearing.

Arthur no longer understands anything.

“What in the wasteland is going on right now?”

The synth in front of him growls, showing anger and impatience for the first time since Maxson knew him.

“Please, leave immediately! For your own safety, I urge you to leave and do not attempt to return; do not ever approach her or search me out. Leave immediately, or we will guarantee that the Prydwen and everything aboard it will be nothing more than a distant memory.”

“You think you can intimidate me?”

“I recognize that my very existence may be a direct affront to everything you stand for, but we have safeguarded the truth about Nora for too long to allow you to acquire her as your claim today! She is a beacon of hope, not a wretched phenomenon to be dismissed in your misguided quest of narrow judgment. It is imperative that you obliterate that memory; your very existence hinges on it!”

Arthur frowns. He would never respond to a threat or bow in the face of an enemy. But this? This is far too much for him.

It was all too much to handle at the same time.

He is stumbling backward rather than walking toward the vertibird, struggling to absorb the shock of everything that has just happened.

“Considered. I've had enough of this vicinity. But let me be perfectly clear: if I catch either of you in my sights again, there will be no show of any mercy. Comprehend that."

“That is the outcome that you would be experiencing as well if that were to be your situation,” Danse replies with a deadpan tone, tenderly holding the young unconscious woman in his arms.

Let’s not forget to acknowledge Alexandre Dumas this Black History Month

The writer of two of the most well known stories worldwide, The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo was a black man. 

That’s excellence.

Let’s not forget that he was played on screen by a white man. And the fact that he was black is barely ever mentioned or the book he wrote inspired by his experiences.

Other things not to forget about Alexandre Dumas:

chose to take on his slave grandmother’s last name, Dumas, like his father did before him.

grew up too poor for formal education, so was largely self-taught, including becoming a prolific reader, multilingual, well-travelled, and a foodie, resulting in his writing both a combination encyclopedia/cookbook (which just— is fucking outrageous to me) AND the adaptation of The Nutcracker on which Tchaikovsky based his ballet

he also wrote a LOOOOT of nonfiction and fiction about history, politics, and revolution, bc he was pro-monarchy, but a radical cuss, and that got him in a lot of hot water at home and abroad.

even beyond that, he generally put up with a lot of racist bullshit in France, so he went and wrote a novel about colonialism and a BLATANTLY self-insert anti-slavery vigilante hero (which he then cribbed from to write the Count of Monte Cristo, the main character of which, Edmond Dantés, Dumas also based on himself).

(…a novel which also features a LOAD of PoC beyond the Count, and at LEAST one queer character, btw, bc EVERY MOVIE ADAPTATION OF ANYTHING BY DUMAS IS A LIE; seriously, at LEAST one of the four Musketeers is Black, y'all.)

famously, when some fuckshit or other wanted to come at Dumas with some anti-Black foolishness, Dumas replied, “My father was a mulatto, my grandfather was a Negro, and my great-grandfather a monkey. You see, Sir, my family starts where yours ends.”

for the bicentennial of his birthday, Pres. Jacques Cirac was like, “…sorry about the hella racism,” and had Dumas’s ashes reinterred at the Panthéon of Paris, bc if you’re gonna keep the corpses of the cream of the crop all together, Dumas’s more widely read and translated than literally everybody else.

and they are still finding stuff old dude wrote, seriously; like discovering “lost” works as recently as 2002, publishing stuff for the first time as recently as 2005.

Hancock - McCready

Hancock: The day he met Sole is still fresh in his mind. They drew nearer, their horns strained as they futilely attempted to squeeze through the doorway to his little town.

Goodneighbor saw many passing, both vibrant and terrible, but this one stood out.

If Flint had been any wiser, he would have noticed that the Mephite creature that was paying them a visit was not one to be foolish with.

Too bad...

With a subtle smile flitting across his lips, the mayor gently shakes his head.

"Maybe we should wait until you aren't under the influence of alcohol or chems?"

"The harsh rays of the Commonwealth sun will bleach your bones, my dear, and I will surely have long succumbed to my feral instincts if you wait for me to be cleansed."

The alluring curves of Sole are delicately caressed by his nipply fingers. After suffering another terrible reception in one of these insular settlements, the helpless being sought solace at the home of their beloved mayor. Their mental and emotional states were in shambles.

Hancock would like to give a lead shot at all those arrogant people who dismiss this person just because of their peculiar appearance.

And what about judging them? There are worse mutations than these horns.

And definitely no better.

These fantastic extremities cause the mayor to imagine Sole is some fantastical satyr, appealing to his more lower desires.

And his more lower desires are on full display under the sheets, beseeching for his friend's attention.

Caressing the magnificent horns with the same meticulousness as the rest of the body to which it belongs, he carefully lays himself in the bed, reveling in their touch.

All parts of their being—their mind, their body, these horns—are solid as a rock.

Oh, their horns!

When Hancock locks eyes on his companion's unique features, a surge of warmth washes over him. They shift from a troubled expression to a more easy one when he lowers his gaze on them, and a grin forms on his lips.

A small snicker escapes him as he says, "Ready for adventure," but other noises soon replace it as Sole shows him that a tremendous amount of desire is more than sufficient for a lack of expertise.

And the desire of Sole is limitless.

MacCready: Surely the intense relief. Undoubtedly, the deep relief. The seemingly impossible has just been accomplished. Did he seriously mistrust his companion's ability to succeed, though?

Mac leaped to his feet and kissed his friend passionately, completely oblivious of any guilt, as Sole triumphantly displayed the medicine that promised to save his child.

When his mind finally processes what's happening, the other lets out a groan that reveals more than anyone would wish. It exacerbates the mercenary's feeling even further.

“Mac!”

Quickly, he takes a step back and raises his hands in a sheepish gesture.

"Oh, I am sorry! I didn’t want to! Yes, I did want to... but not in that way! Yeah, actually in that way... but..."

He scolds himself right away for his lengthy series of stupid behaviors and remarks. He conducts himself like a complete moron.

Sole just seems completely bewildered.

"Hey Mac, it's just me! That monstrous beast with the terrible mutation, you know... I don’t know where you were, but come back to earth and get out of here.”

For someone who hails from the Wasteland Capital, this young man has experienced rare moments of such profound confusion. Without taking a single step toward the exit, he gazes at Sole for a moment.

I had this idea.

Maybe Sole confessing their feelings to the companions, clearly having anxiety about the situation, but the companions feel the same. But as the companion says they feel the same, Sole is killed, shot in the head (either by accident by a settler's gun going off or a raider they'd overlooked)
