the problem with "stop complaining about smut in fandom, pornography is art!" is that a lot of these people are misidentifying what's being complained about.

when people say "i hate looking at the ao3 page for my favorite works because it's 90% smut", they're not complaining about it being smut, they're complaining about the quantity of smut.

it's like yelling at someone who's upset that their mixed fruit salad is 90% apples because "apples are a fruit too! literally everyone agrees that apples are fruit!". they're not complaining that apples are present, they're complaining that there are too many apples in what's supposed to be a mixed fruit salad.

the era of Throwaway Fandom is not for me, man. a lot of folks' hyperfixations move too fast by far these days. by the time i sit down to watch Life-changing Anime or Magnificent Film of 2023 you're all nine fandoms ahead and no one wants to discuss it or look at fanart or fanfiction. media's gone TikTok in every regard: to be consumed, obsessed over, memed, then tossed aside for the next slide-down video

What’s also notable about this phenomenon is that there seems to be a reduction in the creation of subcultural artefacts (such as fanfic or fanart) on behalf of fans, and an increase on the use of AI to create “content” that exists outside of the gift economy that used to govern the practice of fan creations.

This is concerning not because technology is “ruining” fan practices necessarily. After all, new technology and the way that fans interact with new technology has historically been at the core of how fandom grows and develops. This new wave, however, feels different because the focus has shifted to “content creation” as opposed to the fandom community and the relationship between fan and source material.

What will be important moving forward is an attempt on behalf of the fandom community at large to refocus the relationship, and therefore the creative outputs, while also making space for the incorporation of new technology.
