Din Djarin knows nothing outside of the necessities of his job and his covert, not of commonly known world events or people, not what Boba means when he says his face would be recognised, etc, etc

Because in all ways except his birth and geographical location he’s a clone

He’s been raised in a highly isolated environment with no knowledge of the outside world beyond what’s necessary to getting his job done, but he has to keep his helmet on at all times like a stormtrooper because that makes sure no one ever questions why his boss also isn’t taking her helmet off at any point ever

The main difference is that clones start out as shinies and for him becoming shiny has been an upgrade. Aww, they flipped it, how droll!

Now he’s gained more exposure to the outside world he’s getting to choose his own alliances for the first ever time, Grogu, Bo Katan, Boba, etc. He’s getting the chance to form his own opinions and desires just like we saw the clones start to before that was forcibly stripped from them when Order 66 was called

And like the clones, it’s only a matter of time before his own personal overseer grows tired of that sort of brash independence and takes measures to force him back onto their desired track – and all the other Mandos present right alongside him (only via a slightly different method than last time)

It isn’t like they haven’t seeded the way for this thoroughly already

Din also doesn’t know what pog soup is or that he stands out because he hasn’t painted his armour, but that’s because he wasn’t raised by a Mandalorian, only by someone that told him that that’s what they were. But anyone can put on a stolen helmet and cosplay the part – for a time

But this is star wars and Empires fall as well as rise, rebellions gather in the shadows, and the time is running out on this re-run of a story we’ve all seen before

I'm still ridiculously pissed about the recent SW shows being nothing more than a remake that's pretending as hard as it can that that's not at all what it is

You can rework Maul living underground in a hole with a spider body made of scrap and sharing space with an alien snake into Mecha Spider Maul trying to eat Mando way below the surface of Mandalore but it'll always still basically be the same thing

You can kill Sabine's parents offscreen like Bail and Breha died, but without the context of why that originally happened it's just a meaningless waste of characters

You can rework Boba's life to use him as the non-Jedi Luke Skywalker stand-in right down to the adoptive Tatooine family (who die while he's off on a quest elsewhere in order to get the plot moving), swimming about in just his underpants in a bacta tank, and then have him hang out with a twink Jedi and his disreputable slacker friend (with or without his own shitty run down space ship). He's also not out of 'secret' sisters, and has his Big Bad Guy family reveal yet to come

Even Tarkin-lite Rampart gets to be exploded just like his counterpart

Don't even get me started on the amout of 'borrowed from elsewhere' material that they're relying on to support and conceal that they're doing this, and they're leaning HARD on their chosen franshises for plot to copy. But that isn't without some effort. I mean, Disney even own the IP on some of those properties

And I can't decide if it's just corporate laziness that has them recycling everything they possibly can rather than writing anything new or if Disney is just doing their best to stake their claim to George Lucas's work as being their own as much as they possibly can while it's still worth anything to anyone

As underperforming as Ahsoka was that can't be canned because it's the middle arc of the trilogy of shows timeline-wise, but the Acolyte can be dropped because cramming lore from the prequels into a show isn't going to affect the final outcome, whether some people want to see it or not

And we already know this won't be the end of it. Skeleton Crew's trailer shows that they've rehashed Explorers, but switching out a bicycle for a hover bike and adding a few aliens doesn't make that any different either

#flipping things around #redistributing events or respinning them into a new version of the original #doesn't make them original #And I've failed to find anything new in any of these shows #and I've been looking HARD #it's such a let down #but damn if they haven't been consistent in their approach #I remember when SW used to be exciting #when there was potential in new thing actually covering new ground and not being entirely predictable #but those days are clearly long gone #and I'm sad about that #star wars

This book bothers me

After seeing a number of posts regarding it I browsed through it in the bookstore and it reads like nothing more than fan observations written by people who've watched the episodes and not a book writen by anyone with any sort of inside information or a broader knowledge of the plot not yet realised onscreen

The art looks great (really, really great) and the layouts are good but the character knowledge is lacking compared to other similar style books

Tech's description implies that he's weaker than the others in his squad despite seeing no sign of that onscreen. He may be smaller in build but he's never been shown to be lacking in any way

Sister gets the most basic and lifeless description possible because she was only ever mentioned in one book and there's nothing else to write about her without further 'behind the scenes' knowledge

As a fun book that gathers together a bunch of personally held views of the writer it's fine, but if buyers are taking this as a canon resource written by someone who knows enough to not turn out to be wrong the next time a show comes out and appears to retcon a bunch of stuff written here then they may later feel like they wasted their money

Post S3

The Bad Batch is often accused of bad storytelling, but it tells the story it sets out to tell very well

It just isn’t the story we’ve been led to assume that it will be

Like the Book of Boba Fett was never really about Boba. Oh sure, we got a bit of backstory and one big plot point to come back to later, but he remained a bit part player in someone else’s broader story despite the promising title. The Bad Batch isn’t a story of an elite bunch of clones in the time following the Empire’s rise to power

It’s the jumping on point of the much longer-term story Filoni wants to tell about Omega

And outside of how and when they interact with her none of the characters matter in any way at all

Neither Phee or Rex reappear for the finale, because they have no part to play in her story at that point

Crosshair’s S1 time in the Empire isn’t covered because that doesn’t affect her at all, only the times when she can interact with him matter. S2 doesn’t improve on that, it just sets up their forthcoming time together in Tantiss

Omega and Fennec’s time on Bora Vio was shown onscreen, but when the boys return there in S3 we don’t get to see them go inside.

Or were we just supposed to imagine that they chose to go to a location that Omega had previously escaped from without them having set foot there at that time as a purely random pick up location by Phee, that they hadn’t had a look around between her dropping them off there and picking them up again just because they didn’t show that? They drop in the plot point that the boys have been there, that they’ve seen what was done in the labs there, to come back to later, but there’s no advantage to Omega’s plotline in showing that now, so they skip past it like they do with so much else.

No one is shown to miss Echo while he’s with Rex or to grieve for Tech outside of her because none of that matters to the story they’re telling and the writers don’t care about them outside of that one specific plot aspect

Characters come and go, shelved and unmentioned the moment they’re outside of her immediate story. Sitting on the sidelines waiting for her next show to be released so that their part in the mass of already established but currently left hanging plotlines can finally be realised

Tech still matters to her future because ‘Tech records everything’ and that information is still both valuable to her and necessary to what she wants to do next. But in order to get her hands on that she has to leave Pabu to go get it, and since the Batch would only get in her way now, she’ll be going alone

And once she’s left the pseudo-Kamino environment of Pabu (isolated island, experimental batch of clones, underground tunnels, secret landing platform) the Batch are no longer important to her, and that godawful, cheaply tacked on ‘happy ending’ epilogue doesn’t need to show anyone other than Omega and Hunter because all it’s there for is to set up her leaving the island in the first place

Omega, and everything she needs to get what she’s after. A ship to travel in and the reminder of her goal sitting on the dashboard. Most of the rest, like so much else, is just a fanbait distraction

Nothing and no one else matters outside of her so no other closure is forthcoming. Instead of developing any of the story further they instead chose to bulk out half a season with pointless speculation of whether a reprogrammed clone may or may not have been Tech. Sure, there’s a plot point in there to come back to but it wasn’t worth that much padding

This is Star Wars, and when you’re not the main player in the story you don’t get development or characterisation. You get a name check and a cheap death following a glossy fight scene because no one is supposed to care about you

Why do the people behind the current Star Wars shows seem to think that deliberately misleading their fans about the content of their shows is the best policy?

In the past few years we've had a bunch of shows that aren't really about the things they're sold to us as, and one show they're telling us is over even though the story so very clearly isn't

The Book of Boba Fett wasn't about Boba Fett, it was about Mando and filling in some side story for him as well as dropping in a few plot points for other shows into the mix

Obi-Wan Kenobi managed to get more focus on him in his own show, but the story was heavily split between being about him, Leia, and Reva

The Bad Batch is about Omega and what she's doing rather than being about the team itself

The two 'Tales of the...' shows have been more about setting up plot for later use in other shows than actually telling their own stories. Making sure Mace and Dooku's relationship was clear to the audience for when they want to make a direct comparison to it later down the line, being explicit about how Anakin treated Ahsoka and Rex when no one else was looking for the same reason, then setting up Barriss and Morgan for their later parts in another story

It might look clever on paper, but these shows not being the shows we're advertised to us as just disappoints us time and time again. I get that they need to set up plot for later down the line and that all of this is tying the SWU up into one huge MCU type knot of convoluted mess that'll all come together into one overcontrived but interconnected story

But will anybody still care by the time it gets that far?

Tech logic

I appreciate that fandom doesn’t always lend itself well towards logic, emotions run high and get in the way of detached thought, but it’s overdue in this case

When Tech chose to fall he was on Eriadu, but that’s not a location under Hemlock’s control. We know this because Tarkin has a good bitch at him when he turns up late for the meeting there

Hemlock may have had Tech’s goggles in his possession later on, but it wouldn’t have been *his* people who went looking around the site of the monorail collapse, it would have been Tarkin’s

Tarkin makes it perfectly clear that he wouldn’t piss down Hemlock’s throat if his lungs were on fire, so he certainly wouldn’t have handed him anything that he thought he might have been able to gain any sort of advantage from, regardless of the condition it was in

So he gets the smashed up goggles and a ‘that was all we could salvage, such a shame. Anyway’ and gets packed off back to Tantiss

Not only does Tarkin dislike Hemlock but he couldn’t care less for the project he’s working on, he’s solely focused on his own work and considers Hemlock’s an unnecessary drain on the limited funding available

That doesn’t help to clear up where Tech is now, but he was never in Hemlock’s possession

But if Hemlock didn’t have Tech how come CX-2 used the same words and cadence when he talked?

For the same reason so many of the Knights of Ren background CX units had so many of Tech’s design features, with goggles, visors, and helmet shaping repeating amongst the crowd

Distraction and fan baiting, for the sadistic joy of stringing people along until the last possible moment and then spitting in your eye. To make you think that Tech is gone with zero hope of ever returning. To try to put off any fans who've shown themselves to be getting close to working it all out

But CX-2 sounded like Tech for the exact same reason Tech sounds like Tech. Because that’s the way he'd been programmed to speak. Which is also the reason Omega speaks with a space NZ accent

Just because all of the focus on reprogramming clones is put on Crosshair, the CX units, and Hunter (briefly) doesn’t mean it doesn’t go back much much further than that, back to before we ever met CF99. Hemlock is using the technology and data the Empire took from Kamino. The progress on his projects only stalls once Nala Se stops assisting him

Experimental Clone Force 99. Emphasis on the Experimental. Just because they give us a few details about one aspect of that work doesn’t mean they told us everything

Just like Hemlock juggling multiple projects on Tantiss, Nala Se was doing the same thing under Kamino, with her own female clone medical assistant by her side. And on Bora Vio before that

This show has taken scenes from multiple other franchises all the way back to the Clone Wars arc, but what it uses most of all is The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit

They keep repeating an overhead circle motif – a ring or a set of concentric rings. Coming back to it more and more often the closer to the end we get. It even appears as a design on the shoulder of a street seller on Pabu in the finale

CF99 dying with Tech is the SW equivalent to the Fellowship of the Ring being broken. They’re no longer together but the quest goes on regardless. Just with a focus on some of the other characters and in a show we won't be supposed to think is related to Tech because it isn’t a clone centric show

Not only is Tech still vital to the resolution of the bigger story, but there’s still so much plot that's been set up and then left hanging, and they continued to set up new things to come back to later on right up to the finale episode so it’s clear that this story is far from over

There may not be any more clone based shows, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be shows with clones in them. Like Rebels. That wasn’t clone centric, but they were still a key part of the overall story

Despite all of the fanbaiting and the cryptic nonsense if Tech was totally gone and never going to return they'd just have said so

But they can't, because it's all a part of their torture game

They dangled the idea of CX-2 being Tech and watched their fans dance just so they could kill him off right in front of you

But Hemlock never had Tech to begin with, only his goggles

But now they have you assuming that CX-2 was Tech and you just didn't get to see his face, that he's gone and it's all over you're not examing all of the dropped hints and foreshadowing of his future return

And Tech will return. Maybe not for a while, but he remains vital to the resolution of the plot.

To the actual happy ending of the story, not this jumping off point to Part 2 of the same one

The responsible and caring one with a nose stripe/detail and yellow eyes who's been left to look after the 'baby'

A 'baby' in a wide chunky collar who's strong enough in the force to move weighty objects with ease and who needs their cuddle buddy if you want them to behave

The rash and reckless one who gets himself into trouble

And the quiet one, the thinker. Misses the bold one when he's taken away, doesn't want to see a fellow prisoner punished

And this seems familiar somehow...

#tbb spoilers #breakout 2: omega's boogaloo

Since the last episode aired I've seen a lot of people comparing the view of Tantiss from above with Narkina 5 while entirely glossing past the far more obvious comparison

And I get why people have latched onto that imagery, it's a prison, it's sorrounded by hostile territory, it looks vaguely similar from above, and the episode before this was seeded with Andor imagery. But Narkina 5 is already a reference to something else

Kamino

With the domed top and the concentric rings, with there being more than one unit standing in shot sometimes when we see it from the side. Vast constructions surrounded by an innocuous looking span of nothing which will allow anyone to leave and survive without a ship to fly them out of there

When Omega tells the other kids that she’s done this before she doesn’t say ‘I broke out of Tantiss before’ we've just been led to assume that that’s what she means

But it’s actually a skewed mirror of TBB episode one where she smarmed her way into the company of four adults (with a tooka doll) who didn’t know better than to respond positively to her regardless of how she appeared out of nowhere before using them to help her break out of her prison through a hole in the wall of a jail cell because she couldn't get out of there alone.

Kamino isn't her home, it's the place where she had been held and tested on in isolation before being allowed to mingle with the general population, and the whole escape plan only worked because 1) those boys never made their appointment with Lama Su because Tarkin sidelined them, and 2) the chief scientist allowed her to leave
