One of the reasons why nerdcore is so cool is that it has the ability to change how you listen to music fundamentally.

I was talking to someone once about the different aspects of a Good Song, particularly musicality and lyricism. As a writer, I spent a long time only caring about whether a song had good writing—I'd listen to absolutely shit music, stuff that sounded like it had been recorded on a microwave by an overenthusiastic preteen, if the lyrics were cool enough. But when I started listening to nerdcore I'd find parody songs about, like, how hot anime waifus are—and there was Very Little lyrical value in a lot of that, but it was still made by Musicians. It had catchy rhytms and cool melodies and vocal delivery I couldn't stop listening to. And it made me realize there was more that made a song good than just emotionally evocative verse.

And ny friend I was talking to had the completely opposite experience. Before nerdcore, they never used to listen to what a song was saying—they'd hear a track a thousand times and never know what the lyrics were, purely appreciating it on a sonic level. But when they got into nerdcore, they were finding songs about topics they were invested in—it made them want to listen. It made them enjoy music on a new level.

I'm sure both these realizations could happen through other genres, but nerdcore feels like an especially good gateway into music appreciation.

🏳️‍🌈IT'S PRIDE MONTH!🏳️‍🌈 Well it was when this song first came out. I've been busy, ok? Anyway, as usual, I've got a couple things to say about it!

Something I love about One Piece is that, whatever adorable queer headcanon you have about it, there's probably something in One Piece itself that's just as dope and inclusive. Luffy being trans may not be canon, but trans men certainly are canon to One Piece and I can't express just how heartwarming it always feels to know that in the gorgeous world Oda-sensei has created, the people I love the most would fit in perfectly.

Folks familiar with my music will know that TRANS LUFFY RAP is a successor to last year's GAY ONE PIECE RAP (which was shortly followed by GAY DEMON SLAYER RAP...I guess TRANS INOSUKE RAP must be next), a loudly queer track calling out homophobia and promoting pride through only the most out-of-pocket One Piece metaphors. For TRANS LUFFY RAP I went a little less explicit (aside from all the FUCKs) and a little more sweet but stayed just as loud.

Having Shwabadi's help on producing this track meant I could focus more on my writing and delivery, and I'm really happy with how it turned out: a little clever, a little cheeky, a lot catchy. It's always my favorite thing getting to work with my friends in person, and I was lucky enough to be in the studio with Shwab for this one doing a bit of sample selection, a bit of chopping, and a lot of standing over his shoulder describing things in vague terms until he made FL Studio (I'll learn that DAW one day I swear) do what I wanted. I was hoping for a banger and we got a banger. 'Nuff said.

I hope you enjoy TRANS LUFFY RAP! It's a love letter to One Piece, it's a love letter to one of my favorite headcanons, and it's a love letter to trans mascs of all shapes and sizes. Words can't express how deeply I love and care about you, my friends, but if I keep putting them to music maybe a sliver of that admiration will make it across.

Lackadaisy ELECTROSWING! [Unofficial Soundtrack] Original Song by Freeced

I'm a fair bit under the weather right now, but still very excited to share Lackadaisy Electroswing!, a song inspired by your favorite bootlegging, fiddle-sawing cats and mine. Or is that a violin? I grew up in the country.

Lackadaisy Electroswing! is my third time taking on the genre after Komi Can't Communicate Electroswing! (feat. Awkward Marina) and Bees in My Fingers Electroswing! (feat. The Stupendium), so I guess it's my first time doing it solo. I think it came out okay! My production process was plagued by technical issues beyond my control (software messing up, internet going out repeatedly causing further problems because you can't just buy and use plugins anymore without companies asking you to constantly verify that you are in fact the same person as you were ten minutes ago), and I ended up having to cannibalize an old instrumental that I'd never gotten around to using in order to find a decent brass sample for the hook.

But we move!

I wish I could say I was a longtime Lackadaisy fan, but truthfully it's only been on my periphery for most of its existence. I finally caught wind of it several months before the animated short dropped, and knew that I'd be immediately hooked. The art, the animation, the characters and story, and the music are all so fantastically charming, I HAD to show my appreciation in the only way I really know how: MAKE something.

So here's something! I set Lackadaisy Electroswing! to the same tempo that's used in the original dancing cat video over on the official channel because it gives me a kick thinking about that cute little flapper cat dancing to my song. A little whimsy, you know? There are too few utterly charming prospects in animation, and I hope that Lackadaisy will continue to grace our screens for years to come.

TsukkiYama Rap: "Jump, Float" | Freeced | Haikyuu!! [Kei Tsukishima x Tadashi Yamaguchi] Some years ago, Shwabadi, who I didn't know very well at the time, asked me if I'd seen a show called Haikyuu. I said, I CAN see Haikyuu, and he said great! Just watch the first couple seasons this week and you can play Tadashi on my Haikyuu cypher. I'd been a fan of Shwabadi's for years at that point, and there was no way I was going to pass up the opportunity for my first big nerdcore collab, so I got stuck in in an attempt to do some quick research.

I didn't know that Haikyuu was about to become my favorite anime of all time, but I very quickly realized that Yamaguchi was going to be my favorite. Not too long after the cypher, I started writing Haikyuu songs of my own, including one for Yams and one for Tsukki. Each one gently hinted at a romance between the two, and I always wanted to do more to show my appreciation for the ship. In the mean time, I wrote about half a dozen more Haikyuu songs, accidentally contributing to my status as the artist who's written more fan songs about Haikyuu than probably anyone. I can't believe it took me this long to write a dedicated TsukkiYama song, but maybe I needed to let the originals breathe for a while. Either way, Valentine's Day came around this year, and I knew it must be time.

Lo-fi songs are always a cozy place for me, both in creation and appreciation, and I wanted to show love to an artist that inspired me a great deal these past couple years, Lupe Fiasco, with a nod to his track "Kick, Push" off the classic album Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor. The phrase "jump float" got itself stuck in my head as I was making the beat and eventually wound up as a simple hook that I hoped would evoke the feeling of coasting on a cloud of happy emotions between two people who are young and in love. After exploring the relationship between love and pain in my AkiAngel song, I wanted to do something that was simple and sweet, representing the simple affection between two characters who have known each other for so long that they just feel right whenever they're around one another. And above all else, I wanted to make something cute.

So that's Jump, Float! I hope you love it! I put my heart into these songs every time and it's always so sweet seeing how many folks pick up on that and show just as much love back in the comments and around the net. As long as there are cute gay songs to be made, I'm very happy to be a person who makes them. So thanks for listening! ~Freeced
