CHAINSAW MAN RAP CYPHER: PUBLIC SAFETY | Freeced ft. Mir Blackwell, Chi-Chi, JesseBoxVO, FrivolousShara, Shwabadi, and Dan Bull
This is by far the most work I've ever done on a single track, and I really am so proud of how it came out. Ever since I read Chainsaw Man last year, it's meant absolutely everything to me...as you may be able to tell from the two songs I've already written about it before. As soon as I decided I was going to do this cypher, the first cypher I've ever done on my channel, I knew I had to give it everything I had.
From crafting a beat that I felt was worthy of the energy I wanted everyone to bring, to spending hours and hours mixing everyone's vocals as well as I could (something I'm unused to as my songs are overwhelmingly solo projects), to hacking and coughing my way through recording sessions as I dealt with increasing health issues throughout the process, I didn't leave anything on the table, and I'm glad. This cypher is what I wanted it to be and already the response reflects that.
From being a cypher observer for so long, I knew there were some things that were very important to me. One, I didn't want to get just anybody on the track. I wanted the people I heard in my head for each role, the people who I considered at length and decided that they just fit the character. I was very lucky in that all my first choices said yes when I asked them, which saved me the heartache of trying to recalibrate my original vision. There are tons of amazing artists in the community who could have done a fantastic job on this track, but I'm very grateful for the roster I got. Two (we're still counting things), I knew I wanted to give each part of the beat some personality based on the character it represented. To this end, I spent a lot of time choosing specific sound effects and percussion loops that matched every verse: For instance, Denji has chainsaw sounds chopped into a pulsing rhythm, Beam has sonar, and Aki and Angel each have half sword swings and half clock ticks, on opposite sides of their verses. I've learned that subtle touches and ear candy can be the difference between so-so and unforgettable tracks, and I'm really happy with the sounds I was able to find and implement in this one.
