if you’re going to message me with “you only don’t like mil/even because it got in the way of byler,” you genuinely need to revisit the material. from a film and television standpoint, your perfect little heterosexual couple is a textbook case of narrative misplacement. their dynamic wasn’t just poorly executed, it actively relied on a queer character’s emotional arc to prop up a relationship that had no internal cohesion.

mike and el didn’t function as a romantic pairing. they didn’t challenge each other, elevate each other, or even share a coherent emotional language. if anything, the romantic framing made both characters narratively smaller. the tragedy is that their platonic potential was enormous, a found family, trauma bonded, mutually supportive friendship that could’ve been rich and textured. but the duffers flattened that possibility in favour of ticking the “central boy meets girl” box.

and if mike is meant to be their authorial stand in, then frankly, that raises more questions than it answers. because the writing choices around him? especially in relation to el, deserve far more scrutiny than the fandom discourse ever seems willing to give.
