Hero the Hero’s evolution!
The goal was to make Hero gender neutral so that any child could identify with Hero. I really love the current push that some are taking children’s entertainment in trying to break down gender stereotypes and gender specific marketing. Big props to Hero’s creators Pam Helmer and Kary Carkner.
I gotta say it was a challenge to find the right combination of physical characteristics that didn’t tip to far in any particular direction. After my initial pitch it was back to the drawing board for something a little less ‘boy’. Even color selection for Hero’s clothes was carefully considered, staying away from pallets that were traditionally marketed to a specific gender. We are really pleased with the end result. It works. Response from kids has been great with some seeing Hero as male, others as female and some for whom it never crossed their mind.

Did you know there is a comic book shop in Toronto JUST FOR KIDS??
We visited Little Island Comics today, amazing little place, with sooo many kid friendly books! Run by the same dedicated team behind The Beguiling bookstore, and TCAF - the Toronto Comic Art Festival.

Graced with Light
For more photos and videos from the Graced with Light installation, explore the Grace Cathedral location page.
This month marks the last opportunity to see Graced with Light, artist Anne Patterson’s year-long installation in San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral (@gracecathedral).
Commissioned in 2013 as Grace Cathedral’s artist in residence, Patterson strung nearly 32 kilometers (20 miles) of multicolored ribbons from the Cathedral’s vaulted ceilings. Illuminated from above and by light streaming in through the cathedral’s windows, the ribbons represent pathways of light carrying the prayers and dreams of visitors skyward.
