IMAGE THAT TELLS A NARRATIVE
Inspired by David Hockney style of photography
‘Bill and Audrey Wilder, Los Angeles, April 1982- Tate Britain’
The use of boxes reflects the artwork of David Hockney. The use of weave layering displays the fashion/textile element that is important in street style.

Elizaveta Porodina
Fashion photography for HYPE Magazine
This piece is expressive in its use of light and dark to highlight the garment. The use of light striking across the models face makes you as the viewer feel like she is a damsel in distress. This is further illustrated by her body language as her hand is to her face as if she is distressed. The ruched layering of the dress adds to this dramatic story as it makes you feel tensed up and tight. The use of this imagery alludes that the photographer has created a fashion narrative through his use of lighting and instructing the model. The models face is strong and powerful but the central focus of the photography is on the garment which is dominant through the proportion of the photograph being taken up by the garment. The layering of the garment makes the clothing naturally have shadows which works with the lighting positioning. As there is no other focus of the imagery than the dress it allows you as the viewer to fully experience the fashion designers vision.

The Great Wave – The British Museum
‘a swirling maelstrom kaleidoscoping around the tranquil mountain as boats crash and clatter in the waves’
The great wave is a famous art that is well known around the world. The simplicity of the masterpiece makes the work timeless. This is due to the colour and form of the artwork. The way it is proportioned goes against the normal. When reading your eyes automatically scan from left to right, this artwork starts with large jagged shapes. This unease’s the viewer but as the image moves across, the water becomes calm and settling. The simplicity of line and shape is backed up by a clean colour palette. It is limited in its use of colour but uses shade and tone to create affect. The twisting shapes and spitting foam create mini galaxies that completely overwhelm you in their abstraction.
David Hockney
Garden 2015 – Tate-Britain
This painting was viewed at the Tate-Britain. The painting is of the artist own garden in Los Angeles. Hockney is an expressive artist who uses bold colour and shape. The simplicity of shape is effective in his work as the less detail the better. In ‘the garden’ painting the use of acrylic paint is effective as the vibrancy of each colour stands out against each other. He uses tonal painting to build on his work, layering paint over each other to create shadows. The painting is interesting as it is painted as a landscape but does not portray a beautiful scenery but a simple back garden. From the expressive colour used and vibrant bold shapes it makes it clear that it is somewhere the artist wants to be and enjoys which invites the viewer to feel the same way. Proportion is used cleverly in this painting as it forces you to look first at the plant in the centre middle- but when you examine the painting as whole it is more about the building and detail of the flowers. From the exhibition, you learn that the garden paintings are some of Hockney’s most recent work. As an older man, you get the feel that he is more interested in his home and finds beauty in this in his elder life. Being able to tell the story of his own life through his paintings is what makes him a stand out artist.
David Hockney
Bill and Audrey Wilder, Los Angeles, April 1982- Tate Britain
‘Hockney set out to make photographs that contained the dimension of time by giving them more than one point of perspective and perception, as Picasso and the Cubists did in their creations’. With this, this artwork captures a space in time that can be viewed through each of the individual polaroid’s. The detail put into making the overall image is so intricate. This gives such a different perspective on how to use space when painting or taking photographs which made the work stand out. The way each polaroid overlaps but still looks like part of a whole at the same time invites the viewer to look at each image in isolation. The use of the camera as an artistic tool is what makes this work outstanding rather than the satisfaction of taking a good shot. Once you have taken this in you begin to look at the image. The use of lighting and the way the couple are posed makes you believe the story between them. The scene makes you want to be there and know the relationship between the couple in the photograph. This method of putting art together is inspiring to use when looking at fashion photography as it could be used to show how a garment has many details.
