How Does MOT Annual Training Work?
Since April 2016, MOT annual training and an assessment have replaced the MOT tester refresher course. Additionally, the DVSA doesn’t deliver your new MOT annual training or assessments, and you don’t have to attend a refresher course every 5 years. Your new annual training and an online assessment is taken every year in order to maintain your tester status.
What does Annual Training mean?
Annual training uses a CPD (continuous professional development) approach and is a way for you to update and develop your skills in a manageable way every year. Both as an individual and your garage will find a consistent improvement in a number of different areas, including:
Performance and professionalism
Skills and standards
Motivation, confidence and morale
How does MOT annual training work?
As usual, your MOT annual training and assessment sees vehicle classes split into their vehicle test groups, meaning that if you wish to achieve and maintain your testing status for every test group, you will have to complete at least three hours’ training every year and pass an annual assessment.
In order to maintain your testing status, you are responsible for planning, completing and recording your annual training, as well as passing your annual assessment. The DVSA will publish which topics you need to undertake annual training on and will be assessed on every year based on MOT test error rates.
By spending just three hours a year learning the topics for the vehicle test groups’ annual topics, you’ll find the annual training and assessment extremely easy and simple to manage.
How to complete your annual training
Planning and completing your annual MOT training is entirely up to you (or the garage you work for), allowing you to learn according to your individual needs and strengths. The following methods are popular with most MOT testers:
Training providers
Individual training
Group training
You should keep a record of your training to present to any DVSA staff members who visit your testing centre at any point. Failure to properly record your training may result in disciplinary action and affect your testing status.
