me on the dash every 5 minutes:
Janet Fitch, from her novel titled "White Oleander," originally published in 1999
𝐁𝐆𝟑 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬.
a selection of lines from the various companions' banter quotes (not cut scene dialogues!) from baldur's gate 3. these are generally spoiler free and non context specific so they can apply to different settings and dynamics! feel free to change names and the like to customize the prompts.
“Death can't have me. Not yet…”
“Calm yourself. There is plenty of me to go around.”
“Realmspace is vast. Countless worlds to be mapped, kingdoms to be conquered.”
“I have missed this. The adventure. The danger. The kicking of butts!
“Let me guess - you need something.”
“Such attention.. I never realised I was so popular.”
“Let's cook with fire, baby.”
“Do you intend to vocalise every thought?. Or just the most obvious ones?”
“Wherever we go, ye gods let there be something green.”
“Careful, or I will take your toy away from you.”
“Watch your elders and learn.”
“Perhaps try attacking the enemy?”
“So much we don't know, lingering in the furthest reaches of existence.”
“All the world's my stage and you're just a player in it.”
“The shadows are my friend.”
“Yes, yes, have your fun. It isn't you they're trying to kill.”
“Feet planted firmly on Faerûn, please.”
“Admirable stamina, yet terrible priorities.”
“Well you certainly have the 'omnipresent' part down, don't you?”
“I am ready, whatever may come.”
“My faith protects me.”
“Need a throat slitting?”
“Death greets us all - but not today.”
“You need my expertise?”
“Can you feel death's cold grip?”
“So many stars, so many mysteries yet to be discovered.”
“Death comes quietly.”
“And I thought we were going to be friends.”
“Locked tight, but there must be some way to open it.”
“No, you can't die. Get up, damn you!
“You had my attention, now you have my fury.”
“From silence to suffering.”
“So many worlds out there. You'd need a thousand lifetimes to see them all - more.”
“I hope this is important. For your sake.”
“Let them gaze deep into their own abyss, and wonder just what it is they are trying to achieve.”
“I ought to just burn this whole thing down.”
“We have slightly more pressing matters to attend to.”
“You have still have time to surrender.”
“Every kicked buttock, another step on the path.”
“Weave save me. I can't take much more…
“You are right to fear me.”
“Let me look around. Might be something that'll help me crack this thing.”
“Incredible, to think how many worlds exist beyond this tiny speck within a speck I call home.”
“I really wish I could cast a Hold spell on you.”
“I can fawn over my face later.”
“Ready for another round?”
“Keep your blade close.”
“I can't unlock it from here, but there must be a switch or a button somewhere…”
“No, that's not moving. There must be a way to open it somewhere.”
“Battle favours the fearless.”
“Sleep with one eye open, evil. Maybe both.”
“Gotta be something around here to unlock this thing.”
“Why do beautiful people taste better?. It hardly seems fair on the ugly - they have such wonderful personalities.”
“Oh, calm down. I'm happy to see you too.”
“Just go for the Magic Missile and fire away. Never fails.”
“Still standing, no matter what you heard.”
“Enough waiting. I crave blood.”
“Hang on - I won't allow this. You aren't dead, go it?”
“GODS, it's HOT in here!”
“No rest for the wicked, I see.”
“Better to hide than fight, sometimes.”
“Would that I could hide from you, too.”
“Are you feeling lonely, perhaps?”
“There is no right or wrong, only truth.”
“Battle is afoot - you can poke me once we are safe.”
“What good all this ethereal eladrin blood if I can still get pimples?”
“I should've been a drow. They have such stylish armour.”
“I am armed! Armoured! And entirely sick of your foolishness.”
“Let's have some fun.”
“War is an old woman's game.”
“No rest, be you wicked or wise.”
“I'm getting too old for this nonsense.”
“I would poke you back, but I fear that's what you want.”
“You have my attention - now do something with it.”
“You are insistent, are you not?”
“Do what must be done.”
“Your suffering will be spectacular.”
“Lest I sit down for a rest and not rise again.”
“Better to look evil in the eye. Even if it be very small.”
“I'm not built to crouch.”
“I think I could go another round.”
“Always the same old song.”
“Is perfection too much to ask?”
“Eyes on victory, tummy on dinner.”
“So many places to be.. and I chose Baldur's Gate.”
“I'm not opening that. Not from here, at any rate.”
“What is the point, if not victory?”
“Won't last much longer like this.”
“Let's hope the locals are friendly.”
“Let us show them how it's done.”
“Weapons high. Standards higher.”
“Must everyone be so exhausting?”
“What I would not give for a chunk of fresh honeycomb…”
“Which way to the nearest library?”
“Now this is my happy place.”
“Who shall I silence?”
“Stop, or die.”
“Wear your scars proudly.”
@fatespinsalong liked this post for a starter! ─ (for Astarion)
"Don't worry...your secret is safe with me!" the elven bard proclaimed, crossing a hand over her heart. "You're one of us, just trying to survive." And she would stick true to it. After all, despite discovering he was a vampire, it was still his secret to share with others, not hers. Synnove was just more concerned with trying to keep everyone safe and to find a cure for their current predicament.
Which it already seemed to be getting worse, seeing as they would have to be navigating the Shadow-Cursed Lands and trying not to find themselves falling under it's curse. For now, a bit of fire seemed to help. But for how long? "How are you holding up?"
"You don't need to be so..." He waved a hand in a circle like he was trying to find the word. "Nice, about it, darling." It was the last thing he needed, Synnove or even the others when they found out pitying him for his condition as a spawn. If it were one thing about the cursed tadpole in their heads, it freed him from Cazador's influence, mercifully. It allowed him to be his own person for the first time in two centuries. Hells, he'd pity himself if he were anyone else.
"Which part? The part where I have a hunger for blood? The part where there is a tadpole in our brain trying to force us to grow tentacles, or the fact we're in complete darkness and could succumb and kill each other at any given moment due to a shadow curse?" The blond drawled sarcastically, but he looked to where the others were setting up camp. "Honestly? Okay all things considering. None of this is ideal, but travelling with you all helps. I will deny I said that should you elect to tell the others."
It would’ve been easy to lean into the stereotype — ruthless, vicious, and all the rest. But, if this half-elf bard volunteered for the dirty work, it’d just be another excuse to quiet the darkness gnawing at his skull. He didn’t offer. Not after her introduction. A Selûnite. Shadowheart and Ragnar wouldn’t be thrilled to have a Selûnite around, that much was certain. Still, followers of Selûne were known for their moral compass. Things his own mind often twisted out of shape. His impulses were . . . troubling to most. Especially to her goddess.
This drow, Luaffyn, she wasn’t what he expected. Just as he wasn’t what people saw on the surface: smiling, joking, singing, all while something darker swam beneath. His gaze lingered on the moon tattoo marking her before lifting back to her eyes. A low laugh slipped from him. ❝Though I can’t remember who I followed before the nautiloid, I know of your goddess — and how we could use a blessing or two from Selûne right about now.❞ He dipped his head in a polite bow, grin returning as smooth as a melody. ❝Pleasure, Lulu. Adorable nickname. I’m Lucien, though my friends just call me Des. ❞ The smirk tugged wider. ❝Tell me, what’s a sweet, smiling face like yours doing in a place this cursed? ❞
“Well met, Des.” She smiled at him sweetly, though she was sure on drow lips he might not think it so sweet. Most fears what lay behind the smile, even though it was only pleasantries. “I must ask - why Des when your name is Lucien? Sounds like there may be a story behind that.” She mused, taking him in. Bard’s were wonderful with their stories. “I, uhm, I’m looking for something.” With Lorroakan hunting the Nightsong, the Cleric had to find the Nightsong before he did. Too many mercenaries and adventures were sent this way with the promise of gold and fortune of which her Goddess had tasked her to protect. Of course telling her what and where the Nightsong was would have been entirely too easy; but she trusted in Selûne’s plan.
“I only know of it as the Nightsong. Selûne has tasked me with protecting it. I just have no idea where to start. I followed instructions given to adventurers by a wizard in Baldur’s Gate called Lorroakan.” She shrugged a little. She would complete her mission from her Lady of Silver. “I am happy to bestow any blessings I can, perhaps I may travel with you and your party for a time? As long as everyone is in agreement of course, I don't wish to force my presence on anyone." Not everyone wished to travel with a Cleric of Selûne. There was so many different gods and goddesses in the world, and each had their own dominion.

(steel meets skin, laughter turns to breathless stillness)
Training Grounds & Bruised Pride
❛ You’re getting better… but not good enough to beat me. ❜
❛ That swing would’ve taken my head off if you weren’t distracted staring at me. ❜
❛ You call that a punch? Try again. Harder. ❜
❛ Careful—if you keep touching me like that, I’ll forget this is just training. ❜
❛ You’re supposed to disarm me, not pin me down. ❜
❛ If you wanted to get me on the ground, there are easier ways. ❜
❛ Oh, so now you’re blushing? Didn’t expect that from you. ❜
❛ Don’t hold back just because I’m close. Hit me. ❜
❛ You like this too much to call it practice. ❜
❛ You’re bleeding. …and you’re smiling about it? ❜
Clash & Proximity
❛ Stop moving—if you do, I’ll let you go. Maybe. ❜
❛ You’re enjoying this way more than you should. ❜
❛ I could feel your heartbeat when I had you pinned. ❜
❛ You’re supposed to block, not get distracted every time I breathe. ❜
❛ Funny how you only get serious when I get close. ❜
❛ Is this still a fight, or are we pretending it is? ❜
❛ If you wanted to touch me, you could’ve just asked. ❜
❛ That smirk’s going to get you in trouble. ❜
❛ You’re trembling. Adrenaline or something else? ❜
❛ You’ve got a death wish standing that close. Or maybe just a bad idea. ❜
Verbal Sparring & Tension
❛ What’s wrong—afraid I’ll beat you? Or that I won’t stop when I do? ❜
❛ Keep taunting me and I might forget to pull my punches. ❜
❛ You talk too much. Let’s see if I can change that. ❜
❛ Didn’t realize arrogance was one of your fighting styles. ❜
❛ Don’t act so calm—you’re shaking. I can feel it. ❜
❛ You like pushing me, don’t you? ❜
❛ Admit it—you only challenged me so you’d have an excuse to touch me. ❜
❛ I thought you were dangerous. Turns out you’re just distracting. ❜
❛ You keep saying this is training, but you keep looking at my mouth. ❜
❛ Try again. And stop pretending you don’t want to. ❜
Pinned & Breathless
❛ You should really get off me… unless you plan to stay there. ❜
❛ You gonna move, or are you enjoying the view? ❜
❛ You’re heavy. …Don’t you dare move. ❜
❛ Your hand’s still on me. Not that I mind. ❜
❛ Is this where you finally admit you like losing to me? ❜
❛ You can let go now. …anytime. ❜
❛ I said training, not straddling. ❜
❛ If anyone walks in right now, I’m blaming you. ❜
❛ Don’t look at me like that. You’ll make me forget we’re supposed to be fighting. ❜
❛ I thought this was about technique, not temptation. ❜
Aftermath & Smolder
❛ You’ve got blood on your lip. …Here, let me— ❜
❛ You hit harder than you should. I liked it. ❜
❛ I should hate how close that was. But I don’t. ❜
❛ You’re shaking. Here—catch your breath. ❜
❛ For someone who swears they don’t care, you sure looked worried when I fell. ❜
❛ You didn’t have to pull me that close. ❜
❛ I’ve fought a lot of people. None of them ever looked at me like that. ❜
❛ Are we still sparring, or… something else? ❜
❛ Tell me you didn’t feel that too. ❜
❛ Maybe next time, we skip the weapons. ❜

The apology took Desmond by surprise. It wasn't something he expected. Nor was the explanation that followed after. Perhaps, with his surprise, he was just as guilty of stereotyping the Dark Elf before him. They were known to be closed off, unemotional, and ruthless. Despite his corrupted brain, he'd realized there was so much he was incorrect about in these lands.
❝Apology accepted.❞ The bard put his hands over his heart. ❝Although I would prefer women take out their frustrations on me in other ways . . . I understand. ❞ Desmond said honestly. To be upset about a moment of wrong reactions would be hypocritical of the bard who could only think about killing. ❝I will never preach that my morals are higher than other, but I will not stand by discrimination. I am not above turning a blind eye if you feel beating them senseless is the appropriate way of handling it.❞
"That sounds... interesting?" It was certainly not what she thought the bard before her would say. "Oh, no, I wouldn't harm them. That would be giving into the stereotype they're painting me with." When her parents fled the Underdark, it was Selûnite's that held guide their way in moonlight. She doubted Selûne would be much pleased with that course of action. While she didn't think her Goddess would forsake her, she did think the Goddess would be disappointed and that was so much worse to the Drow in a way. "I don't think it is something that would make my Goddess happy." She was no Paladin, so she doubted revenge would exile her. But Lu just didn't want to be the monster everyone saw her as. "I should introduce myself, I am Luaffyn Torett. You can call me Lu, Lulu or Ffyn, I'm a Cleric of Selûne. You know, if the moon tattoo didn't give it away." She chuckled lightly giving him a warm smile.
@vowofthesun asked: "You just don't know when to stop, do you?"
"Just because you don't follow the same Goddess as I do doesn't mean that I should just stop talking about her." Shadowheart told him pointedly. She was all for differing beliefs, unless those beliefs came in the form of a Selûnite. Dealing with both Luaffyn and Isobel was taking far to much of her limited patience.
Lathander on the other hand, wasn't her God, but there was no issue like there was with Selûne. This was the Cursed Shadowlands, evidence of her Dark Mistress hung around them in the shadows that neither the pixie blessing or Isobel's gift could taint with light.
If there was any place to be drawn into Shar's dark embrace, it was here right? So why did her words feel hollow. As if she were trying to convince herself and not the others? Her hand hurt and she winced in pain, her free hand moving to rub the sore part. Why the Gods deemed this pain necessary was beyond her, she tried not to question their wisdom, Lady Shar's wisdom, but it hurt.
@karmasrage asked: "Can we have a conversation, or do you want to pretend that everything's alright?"
"I would much rather prefer to pretend that everything is alright, thanks for asking." Karlach grinned at Karma, they were going to sort the issue, so having a conversation felt like a non-starter honesty. A waste of time if you will. "Besides, don't we have some people to go save? Wasting time talking about stuff is only going to delay that. Don't want to get there to late, you know?" She could feel the thrum of heat from her engine and fought the urge to rub the spot on her chest where it sat. "Let's go soldier."
@clawsrooted asked: "Are you going to make this a habit?"
"That really depends on what you believe I'm making a habit? If that is being a handsomely charming Wizard, then I already have that covered I fear." He joked easily, trying not to lean into the elephant in the room, or the goddess in the room if you'd rather. Elminster was rather clear about his task to win of Mystra's good graces. He needed to get back in the Goddess' favour once more. That driving need to prove himself to the Goddess of Magic was not really a topic he wished to delve into at present. Not when he still needed to find a magical object to absorb later.
@dungeonmastery asked: "I think it's pretty clear you're mad at more than just me."
The Cleric fixed the male with a look, willing Selûne to help hold her tongue lest she say something she regretted later. Saying words out of spite was not her thing. Dark eyes closed as she took a second to ground herself in her thoughts. "I apologise for snapping." the Drow told him quietly. She had just had enough of people commenting on the fact she was a Drow to last her an age. "I've heard the term Under Elf more often than I would like today." It wasn't even like she was raised in the Underdark. Many just assumed. "I took that frustration out on you, for which I apologise."
