Maybe the person you need to be the most gentle with is yourself. People don't realize how self-deprecating they can really be when thinking about themselves. Consider trying to stop calling yourself all those words you wouldn't say to a friend. After all, you are the longest companion you will have for your whole life, you shouldn't spend it hating yourself so much. You can't outrun yourself, but you can change the way you feel about who you are.
