Thinking about the toxin.

More and more people were being committed to Arkham Asylum, deemed insane for the constant fear that was flooding their minds. These were ordinary people with no history of mental illness suddenly going cuckoo, and everyone knew who was responsible. A madman calling himself The Scarecrow. For years this man had been stalking the streets and poisoning people with fear.

There was no cure being made since nobody could acquire a sample of the toxin since Scarecrow avoided everyone that pursued him, including The Batman. Batman was getting severely agitated that this man wasn’t brought to justice, and there was no cure for these innocent people. Batman interrogated every street thug he could find but, none of them knew the whereabouts of Scarecrow, so he couldn’t create a cure.

But then he read the paper and saw that a professor had been studying fear itself, and his name was Johnathan Crane. Batman thought that his research would most definitely make creating a cure much easier, so he found where Crane worked and decided to pay him a visit after school.

He landed on a balcony and saw the professor at work through the glass door, before then letting himself in and breaking the silence.

“Mr. Crane? I have a few questions..”

It was an understatement to say Batman letting himself into his office was a surprise. Too absorbed in next week’s lesson plans, Jonathan hadn’t noticed at first, and then the low, gravely baritone of the question filled his ears.

He froze, knuckles going white with how hard he was gripping the edge of his desk. It was not fear or panic, not exactly. That would have been impossible. But something had caught Jonathan there, held him in place for the moment, caused his heart to start racing and a nervous tremor to develop in his hands.

Batman. This was not happening. Jonathan had been too careful, too studious in covering every track, every trace of information that could have linked the Scarecrow to Dr. Jonathan Crane. There was nothing Batman could rightfully pin on him--so why? And besides, if the vigilante had figured things out, why was Jonathan sitting there calmly at his desk, and not halfway to the police department by now?

There had to be something else.

He closed his eyes, back still to the Batman, voice too calm, too collected when he spoke.

“To what do I owe the pleasure, Dark Knight?”

I can’t think of any child characters specifically, but I’ve always liked to play around with Jonathan having some fatherly or mentorly affection for Harley, particularly in verses where she was his student, so I’m sure he’d gladly “adopt” her, so to speak!

☢ FEAR IS EVERYTHING MOTHERFUCKER

☢ : Character my muse is afraid of.

There isn’t a lot Jonathan is afraid of anymore–it’s one of the emotions dulled and rendered useless by the constant fear toxin experiments and overexposure. It’s more accurate to say who he used to be afraid of, to which there’s only one clear answer, Great Granny Keeney, six feet under.

He still has nightmares about her abuse, sometimes. About the crows. The fear is gone, but that can’t change what happened.

Barbara had never been an extraordinary student. Intelligent and memorable, yes--her time had been entirely divided between sleeping through his classes and arguing with him for the sole purpose of stirring things up, all while getting near-perfect grades. And it was those things that ensured she was never extraordinary, at least in Jonathan’s mind. She had displayed very little engagement in the subject matter, very little interest.

Consequently, he had forgotten about her by the time the first email came. Smalltalk at first, catching up and talking about current events and future plans, the customary choice of topics for people who once knew each other and now have nothing in common. Barbara told him she had returned to college online; Jonathan told her he had hopes to take over his department when the current head retired in the next few years.

It was unexpected when she asked him to meet in person. Catching up, she had said, again. Jonathan would have refused, his schedule busier than ever as the Scarecrow grew in notoriety, but...

But there was something else. It was very unlike of the girl he had known to contact him at all, let alone make time to meet with him, for more smalltalk of all things. She had an angle. She was a smart girl. She must have wanted something.

And curiosity had always been Jonathan’s greatest downfall.

The coffee shop is close to the college, and Professor Crane occupies his customary seat by the window, an amalgamation of papers spread across the table. Lab work and research in favor of lesson plans and essays this time, but his foot is tapping lightly against the briefcase under the table, so that could change any minute. There is always too much work and never enough time, but Jonathan is staring out the window, a flash of silver wheels and red hair reflected in his pale eyes.

Barbara is older now, as she crosses the threshold of the cafe, but so is Jonathan, hair grayer and lines around his eyes more pronounced every time he looks in a mirror.

He doesn’t know how to approach this older, more mature version of once one of his most paradoxical students--not yet, that is. He doesn’t know what makes her tick. But he will. So Jonathan sits back, and for now, is content to observe, and lay in wait.

Ok so I had a very enthusiastic English professor last semester who had a tendency to go on long, loud rants and get incredibly off tangent during lectures and it was great. This semester he teaches a mythology course across the hall from my criminology class at the same time, so every day I hear him passionately yelling about something from across the hall, and it got me thinking – Scarecrow was a professor. Imagine all of the shit that went down when he taught.

He’s known as that professor who is entirely too enthusiastic about his work. Like, the professor everyone talks shit about. i.e. “If I have to sit through one more lecture about the complexities of fear I’m going to scream, probably much to his enjoyment.”

The amount of students who drop his class after, like, the first two lectures is astounding. We’re talkin going from 60 students to like 30.

He doesn’t like when people doze off during his lectures so he just picks up the nearest book and hurls it across the room to wake them up. Watch out, there’s a developmental psychology textbook flying across the goddamn lecture hall. 

Students in the next lecture hall over can always hear him yelling about something to the point where they come to expect it. It’s like the highlight of their time in class. “There goes Dr. Crane getting all hype again.”

People actually start daring each other to take his class or take bets on who can handle it the longest. The stakes get higher with every passing year.

Professors (or at least science professors) can order the weirdest things from catalogs for research/demonstrations. So he orders a ton of spiders and insects and just releases them in class one day. The students in the next lecture hall sit there mortified by the blood curdling screams they’re hearing. All one of them can say is “I told them not to take Crane’s class.”

Is anybody ok with my muse mentioning your muse in a thread they have with somebody else?

       YESSSSSSSSSSSS. 

       this is a pretty big issue for me actually. 

        and not just because it’s really amazing to see what other muses         say, think and feel about your muse when they’re not around but         because I WANT SOME CONTINUITY. i am trying to create a          continuity for my character where everything that isn’t an AU          has feelings and actions making sense depending on a timeline         and people they know and love. actions have consequences.          relationships and events change people. 

        roleplay without that is… well, repetitive… & not very fulfilling to me.
