when i was a teenager it felt very revolutionary to be cruel to myself. like some kind of slow passive protest against how much everything hurt. i starved myself of sleep and food and tenderness because it felt right. it felt sharp and angry and radical and i wanted to be those things. adulthood is the realisation that the world is already working to cut into you well before you learn how to do it yourself. caring for yourself and others is the real protest

Funny that I could find motivation to come back with translation after losing all interest in a manga.
Well let’s start with finishing those incomplete trans script.
Conversation with a Native Son: Maya Angelou and James Baldwin
It honestly does weird me out a bit that some of you on here have kids. It isn't a slight against any of you and I'm not saying you shouldn't be allowed to have hobbies. It's just strange to me that you post something very smutty and the next post is something about your kids.
Hey, nonnie. I'm sure you're not the only one weirded out. But hobbies don't stop after kids. I'm not going to make any apologies about being a mom and posting what I choose to on my blog. If it's weird or strange to you, feel free to unfollow or filter out "navybrat rambles". Maybe I'll make a brand new tag just for my family talk.
And maybe you truly didn't mean it as a slight or to shame me, but I don't get the weirdness of age or who has kids or not on this site.
If someone would like to point me in the direction of a site that is like Tumblr but not Tumblr, I'm all ears. 😂 Please and thank you. ❤️
The literal children on here need to deal with their internalized misogyny before they send messages like this.
I’m so fucking over it.
Do you know that when you turn 30, you don't become a 80+ grandma?
Do you know that women's sex lives don't end after they have kids?
Do you know that hobbies aren't just for teenage girls, but also grown ass women?
Do you know that ageism is fucked up and problematic?
Do you know that moms had passions and thoughts and feelings and opinions and desires before they had kids – and they didn't disappear as soon as they gave birth?
I'm not a mother. But I get so disgusted how people on here treat women they know are older than them and/or are mothers. Women can be mothers and write smut. They are not mutually exclusives, you absolute idiots.
If this continues, you're going to force the best writers off this platform. Ya know, the women who have life experience and know how to write realistic and healthy relationships.
i have bad news for this anon about how children are made
...i keep scratching my head about this one. Is it that ppl who think moms shouldn't, or it's weird that moms do, write fanfic/smut--is it that they think moms should childproof their entire lives? how can you write smut when there's a chance your too-young kid might stumble over it? Is that the problem in their heads?
--wait, are these the same people who want us to childproof the entire internet so they don't have to be responsible for their own surfing and reading habits? because that would explain a lot actually
I wonder if these people ever think about how many of the actors they stan have
Movie directors have
Book authors have
I don't know why mobile ate the word "kids" out of every sentence, but I love the surrealist vibe
i just took it for a dramatization of being too overcome by the stupidity to finish a sentence
I am a 65 year old Grandmother who has been reading, writing about and enjoying comic books for over 50 years. Did you think that we hit 30 or 40 or 60 and suddenly all the fun disappears from our lives? You don't think I should be online, well too bad. I have no intention of conforming to your outdated views, so get used to it. Bat-Gran is here to stay
For those who have trouble reading that:
Imagine being a black, gay drag queen in the 1800s after being born into enslavement AND having the style and cachè to throw soirées that the girls had to come to! That’s why I don’t want to hear this “we’re not our ancestors stuff.” You’re right!
From The Very Black Project Page- William Dorsey Swann was a gay liberation activist. Born into slavery in 1858, he was the first person in the United States to lead a queer resistance group and the first known person to self-identify as a “queen of drag”. Imagine the queenery of this icon.
He was a slave in Hancock, Maryland and was freed by Union soldiers after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. During the 1880s and 1890s, he organized a series of balls in Washington, D.C. He called himself the “queen of drag”. Most of the attendees his gatherings were men who were former slaves, and were gathering to dance in their satin and silk dresses. William was arrested in police raids numerous times, including in the first documented case of arrests for female impersonation in the United States, on April 12, 1888. In 1896, he was falsely convicted and sentenced to 10 months in jail for “keeping a disorderly house” (running a brothel). After his sentencing, he requested a pardon from President Grover Cleveland. This request was denied, but but he was the first American on record who pursued legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ community’s right to gather.
He was known to have been close with Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall, two men who had also both been slaves and who formed the first known male same-sex relationship between enslaved Americans.
When William stopped organizing and participating in drag events, his brother continued to make costumes for the drag community. Two of his brothers had also been active participants in his drag balls.
Imagine how intelligent and ambitious this man had to be to come up with drag balls in the 1800s! Imagine how many terrible concepts he had to unlearn by himself to be a confident gay black man who does drag in the 1800s! Imagine how courageous he had to be to fight for lgbt people as a former slave in America in the 1800s!
William Dorsey Swann is the original queen, the original drag mother, the original activist. Tell his story!
I assume these have been posted, but friends, you HAVE to see some more photos from this shoot:

[ENG SUB] Umibe no Étranger
Title: Umibe no Etranger Also known as: Stranger by the Beach, L'étranger de la Plage This is a animated movie adaptation of Umibe no Etranger by Kii Kanna Manga plot: “There’s nothing wrong with liking another guy.” To be in the arms of the person I love… I thought that was an unattainable dream… On an island off the coast of Okinawa, two young men meet on a beach. Shun Hashimoto is gay and aspires to be a novelist. He is interested in Mio Chibana, a somber high school student, and starts to flirt with him. Day by day, the two of them grow closer, but then, suddenly, Mio decides to leave the island. Three years later, Mio returns and approaches Shun with the words, “I’ve thought about it for the past three years. I like you, Shun, even if you’re a guy.” However, when faced with the prospect of finally becoming lovers with Mio, Shun cannot take the first step towards commitment. This is a tantalizing love story about a gay novelist and a younger part-time worker. (From: MyAnimeList) In collaboration with aarinfantasy~ Thank you!

In recent days, there have been a number of posts on tumblr about third party apps that host AO3 fic on them. A lot of people are worried and even more people are pissed.
There is no need to send in emails to AO3 Support or to the Policy and Abuse team. They are fully aware of the situation and are probably drowning in emails right now.
Here’s what I know and what you can do about it.
Fluff app / Fanfiction Pocket Archive Library app / Archive Track Reader app:
These apps work as a sort of skin for the AO3 site itself. They don’t download works and redistribute them. They provide an access point to AO3.
The developers of these apps are making money from the app itself (through tips and subscriptions - both voluntary), which wouldn’t exist without the free content created by AO3 authors. Since people post their work to AO3 because it is free to access and hosted without ads, authors are understandably angered by this.
Because these apps are basically just a portal to the site, a DMCA notice will not apply in this case. All works currently hosted on AO3 will show up on these apps, because these apps are simply letting you view AO3 through their interface.
Woodsign company apps (including MCU, Harry Potter, Sherlock, Creepypasta, and more):
These apps seem to curate some fic from the various fandoms and rehost it. They allow users to read offline, so it’s possible they are redistributing it. In this case, a DMCA takedown might be effective.
This app developer is also making money by hosting fanfic that was written and posted for free on AO3. They have put up a paywall so that you can only access the complete fic if you pay for it or rate the app in the App store.
If you want to post a negative review, consider saying things like:
* these fanworks are free already at archiveofourown.org * you can kudos, comment, bookmark, subscribe, and mark to read for later for free with an archiveofourown.org account * you can also download fics to read later in various file formats - both pdf and formats that are usable by ereaders * archiveofourown.org is a website with full mobile browser accessibility. Anything you can do in this app, you can do on the site - for free, and without ads * the Archive is a fully-licensed non-profit organization run by volunteers, unlike this for-profit app
There is no official AO3 app. The website is mobile friendly and if you want to have quick button access to it, you can Add to Homescreen on your phone and you can click in just like you would on an app. None of these third party apps can provide you with AO3 support. Only AO3 can do that. The best version of the site will always, always be the site itself.
If you’ve read this far, please signal boost so that AO3 Support can get fewer tickets. And if you love AO3, consider donating to them. They accept donations year round, not just during their pledge drives.
I wonder where the break happened that such wide swaths of younger fans don’t grasp fandom things that used to be unspoken understandings. That fic readers are expected to know fiction from reality, that views expressed in fic are not necessarily those of the author, that the labels, tags and warnings on various kinkfics are also the indication that they were created for titillation and not much more, please use responsibly as per all pornography. The ‘problem’ isn’t that so-called ‘problematic’ fic exists but that some of the audience is being stupid, irresponsible, at worst criminal, at best not old enough to be in the audience to begin with. And that’s on the consumer, not the author who told you via labels, tags, ratings, warnings and venues what their fic was about and what it was for.
I can’t stress enough how important this post is
Tumblr. Tumblr is what happened, with its never-ending scrolling, with its lack of nested contents (or ANY comments, when fandom sailed here from the old world), with its tags instead of membered communities.
Tumblr turned fandom content into mindless consumption instead of community. I’m no expert on human behaviour, but I’d put money on this.
When Authors stopped being friends and turned into content providers, new fandom members never learned to care.
“When authors stopped being friends and turned into content providers”
Well that reframed my view of every fandom I’ve touched for the last five years, and it explains a lot.
