Iruma-kun S4 - Ep. 7: ANIMATION BUDGET WELL-SPENT (a review - SPOILERS!)
HOLY SHIT... The Misfit Class' performance lasted 15 MINUTES. 15 MINUTES OF MOVIE-QUALITY, SMOOTH-BABY-CHEEKED, SPINNING-SHOTS-GALORE GOODNESS. THEY USED ROTOSCOPING, so real dancers actually performed the dances behind the scenes, producing animation so fluid!!!!
There were at least 5 spinning shots. FIVE. CINCO. AT LEAST.
Like look at this. Look at Elizabetta's portrayal of Lilith... This was just the OPENING ACT you guys, and this is just a GIF!!! The music and her singing voice was so enchanting. I wish I had a music background, because they put so many details with the music and instrumentals alone. Speaking of music...
IRUMA SLIDING HIS FINGERS ACROSS THE KEYBOARD!!! The technique??? Like, is he even making mistakes here? Are these really the hands of an amateur? (Legitimate question for piano players). Not featured above, but the particular sequence he also played during Alice's scene is so prettyyyy you gotta see it!!
I'm so proud of him and his ever-growing self-confidence. And the black nail polish he's wearing really adds to the great visuals.
NOW THIS IS A SYNCHRONIZED DANCE
The bodies feel like there's weight to every movement! It doesn't feel like a copy-paste of bodies either? Like you can see their personalities or their dance experience level in the hell dance proper.
From the innocent Aleph (played by Lied) to the bold Khet (played by Sabnock), from the playful intonation of Clara to the icy rationales of Kerori, every Misfit had their time to shine!
I must admit that I don't have much experience with other Music Festival anime episodes. But like, if one's comparing this to the usually stellar and high-budgeted Bones' rendition of BNHA's 4-minute musical band performance... It's evident how much Bandai Namco Pictures CHOSE to give this part depth and substance far beyond what the manga had offered.
To be fair, music performances seem to be Nishi-sensei's bread and butter. (MAKES ME MORE EXCITED FOR THE EVIDOL ARC.) Very happy that every scene of the Hell Dance performance was given so much thought, personality-wise and music-wise and dance-wise and lighting-wise... (GOOD GOD THE COMPOSITING)
(More glazing below. But these are only few compared to the episode experience itself, so watch in full!)
This right here is why the anime adaptation is special.
I’ve seen faithful adaptations, I’ve seen adaptations that add and change the story to smooth over rough patches or to balance the story.
I’ve seen anime that uses a massive animation budget to build up a massive action sequence and “bring to life” the panels.
But instead, Demon School just feels…genuine in a way that’s hard to describe. The animation style normally feels like an early 2000’s anime. It’s clear they don’t have a big animation budget, but instead of try to chase sakuga and “compete”, they instead just have fun with the music, the voice actors and continue to add little background details character moments.
Clara and her family having their own little musical songs to best characterize their brand of crazy. Adding life to all the animated devil items and having them eat, fly or have extra eyes or wings.
And now the respect and care given to the story arc that made Demon School a lot of peoples favorite manga. With Purson revealing himself to everyone this season the Misfits are “complete” for the first time and as such they’re rewarded with some of the best animation and music that the team could build.

AU where Midoriya Izuku pursues a fashion degree after Heroics school because he won't DARE half-ass All Might fashion merch production once Yagi had made it known that he's thinking of passing the Mighty Agency down to him.
...But from the POV of outsiders.
-
Uni freshie: "Midoriya Izuku doing fashion school? Did he write 'fashion trend' on his shirt and call it a day?!"
Uni Deku stan: "He made an entire All Might-based collection for his thesis."
Uni freshie: "Wh-what? Ha. He probably stapled capes together and called it a mighty collage."
Uni Deku stan: "HE WOVE, DYED, HAND-EMBROIDERED EIGHT GOWNS, AND SAVED THE WORLD IN BETWEEN, YOU UNGRATEFUL BUFFOON—"

Uni freshie: "...Why is there a long line?"
Uni student 1: "Last year, someone convinced Deku to do individual fashion analysis and give fashion advice. The sign-ups always open on Fridays.
Uni freshie: "..."
Uni student 1: "He's also the top of his class you know."
Uni freshie: "I'm gonna drop out."

Uni freshie: "HE CAN STRUT IN 5-INCH HEELS?!"
Uni student 1: "And 7-inch, and 8-inch. He does tests on heel samples for hero costume pitches made by his fellow students... Why are you so shocked? His balance is amazing! You must've watched how he did acrobatics on the Symbol of Fear, right?"
