I wonder if the Himura's being inbred has anything to do with the mental instability of the main family branch's offspring (Aka Rei and her kids). That is NOT to say the abuse from Enji wasn't a key factor. Abuse is terrible and can do terrible things to the mind, but I think it can be argued that Touya showed instability prior to all of the abuse and neglect. There's a chance that the abuse caused the snap of an already precarious mental state.
