“I like it when it rains hard. It sounds like white noise everywhere, which is like silence but not empty.”
— Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
people will say “they’re only friends” and then show me two people who would crawl through broken glass to hear the other laugh once. two people who have memorized each other’s coffee orders, fears, childhood stories, and emergency contacts. two people who would haunt each other’s houses as ghosts. be serious.
Just an FYI—the original intention of this post was to challenge the way people say only friends, as though friendship is somehow lesser than other forms of love. As if being deeply known, cherished, and chosen by another person could ever be a small thing. Normalize profound platonic love. Some of the most fulfilling, transformative, and enduring relationships we will ever have are friendships. 🫶🏼

ilya: ghosts shane for six months after their emotionally charged first time anal and blows him off in sochi
shane:
vegas bathroom scene is really just like. ilya has the upperhand. ilya is using shane's desire for him to get what he wants and set the terms for their dynamic. ilya is controlling the game and telling shane how the night will go. but then. But Then. shane says 'when did your english get so good?' and ilya says, 'i read new yorker now' and shane's smile is so blisteringly infatuated and his 'really?' is so eager and all of a sudden. ilya is disarmed. shane (unknowingly) has the upperhand now. ilya turns away from shane and stops making eye contact. ilya beats back shane's every question with a flippant answer 'no new yorker is boring' 'ah so being boring is genetic'. but it literally doesn't matter what he says because shane is so enamoured and so weak-kneed and so taken with ilya that his earnestness is pouring out of him. he can't help it. he says 'my dad loves it' like he wants ilya to know him. he says 'wow, genetic' like it's a love confession. and ilya Cannot get back the upperhand. he can't get back the control. so he makes a deal and he sets the terms and it's fine. but then shane looks at him from under his lashes with watery eyes and says 'and if you win?'. and ilya's self-control shatters and he Has to kiss shane. he can't help it. in a second, he'll leave the bathroom and take everything he feels and lock it away in a box he won't allow himself to touch. and yes the aftermath will be agony but it's also. they're playing a game of chess and shane doesn't even know he's already won, y'know?????????????
