The Virgin Suicides (1991)
if youāre ever scared youāre not a good person, remember that bad people donāt care about being betterĀ
I actually needed to read this
Marco Sousa
Iām in the mood for that love shit, that real real love shit ā¦
A lot of the desi men that my friends are dating, are engaged to, or married to, always start out as very progressive and caring partners. These men let my friends wear whatever they want, let them go out whenever they want, let them have careers, let them have guy friends, and promise them they wonāt be bogged down by typicalĀ ābahuā chores.Ā
Then, they get married.Ā
Afterward, you start hearing of how married life isĀ ācompletely differentā from engagements or dating. Unmarried people just wonāt understand.Ā
Already, there is pressure of having kids the day the bride leaves the wedding hall and on to live with her husband and in-laws. The husband reassures the bride that she should consider leaving her studies, but only for a bit, until they move out of the in-laws house and get their own place.Ā
The wife agrees because it sounds like a reasonable choice. After all, marriage is all about compromises.Ā
Then she leaves her home, possible her country, and moves in with her husband and in-laws. Since she doesnāt go to school and doesnāt need to work, she spends her whole day cooking and cleaning and complying to her in-lawsā every demand.Ā
Then, her husband finally comes home at the end of the day. But the husband is too tired to spend time with her. He just wants to chill out and have a cup of chai. She makes him a cup of chai. Her husband then goes to hang out with his dad watching cricket in the living room, or goes out with his friends that night for business-related things. She cleans up after him. She goes to sleep.Ā
Compromise. Sabr. Resilience.Ā
When will desi men realize that desi women have to sacrifice a hundred more things than you do in order for it to be even considered a compromise? Desi women have to have a million things done to them, to be angry about, for them to justify standing up for themselves. In our culture, the mere demand for wives to be treated as equals in the household is a mess.Ā
The stories of women in my family who were forced into lives they didnāt want and didnāt utilize their passions breaks my heart. My grandma wanted to be a journalist and write about the injustices she saw inflicted on disabled ppl while she was volunteering at a state run institution as a teen. Her father decided that she was ātoo fat and stupidā for college and forced her to get married at 17 or else heād make her homeless. As a kid she told me that she wished people believed that she had meaningful opinions on events around her. One of my great grandmothers wanted to be an artist but was pressured into marrying a man who beat her. She stayed up late each night when her children were in bed writing poetry and pasting it over elaborate collages she mad herself. We still have stacks of these notebooks she created but was never allowed to do anything with. My mother wanted to be an operatic singer and was considered a musical prodigy in her town because she taught herself three seperate instruments by 13. When she was 18 she met my then 30 year old father who emotionally manipulated her into giving up her dreams to start a family with him. As a kid I would hear her up at night playing the violin or doing vocal exercises until she became too depressed to practice anymore. Like idk yāall thereās a quiet type of violence in the way womenās talents are devalued and brushed aside in favor of bullying them into ātraditionalā roles that ultimately donāt fulfill what they wanted for their lives. Weāve lost so much art, music, writing, science, and happiness to misogyny.
Iāve never seen this with the update and it makes it so much funnier

This is Susan Robinson, one of the last people in the country who can preform late term abortions after the murder of Dr. George Tiller. This is from an awesome documentary called After Tiller, about the last 4 late-term abortion practitioners in the country.
This documentary is so so powerful and also available on Netflix! I highly recommend it
itās also on youtube:Ā https://youtu.be/rvavyqrmbWc
Nearly 99% of all abortions in the US occur before 21 weeks. Of those that happen late in pregnancy, many are due to complex circumstances, including severe fetal anomalies.
