for day 13 of fence summer nationals I thought I’d just make a cutesie little post abt how awesome and fun this was!! Genuinely this event has carried me throughout moving 😭😭 I been writing and reading on planes, on busses, in different states, while actively talking to my family, and it has been SO awesome!!! Everyone is so so talented and I’m so glad so many people could pitch in fics, art, analyses, collages, playlists, SO MUCH TALENT AUGHHHHH!!! Thank you so much @fencesummernationals for hosting this, it was SO fun!! I also used the event as leverage to get 7 different people to read FENCE so as far as I’m concerned I’m completely winning LMAO anyways this was all so so so fun and AHHHH YOURE ALL SO TALENTED !!!!! day twelve: rare pair

Wow, can you believe it’s over? It has been a hectic twelve days and we MADE IT!

Sorry for the late post, woke up at noon and got in a fight with my mom over my crisises.

Fun.

Anyway, for todays post, I wasn’t sure what to do, but then me and my dad were watching the movie Music and Lyrics (awesome movie, go watch it) and I was like “I’ve never met anyone else who’s seen this” and my dad was like “cuz it’s a dad movie” and my brain was like “hmmmmm has Robert coste seen this?”

The fence brain rot is real.

Anyway, I then wrote this at like one am.

day 11: treasure vs trouble

I wrote a wicked au.

DEAR OLD SHIZ

Nicholas Coste, son of the Baron of the Upper Uplands, arrives at Shiz University, where he’s met with an… unappealing surprise.

Seiji Katayama, son of the Mayor of Munchkinland, arrives at Shiz University and learns that the school motto of “All Are Welcome” might be a lie.

okay story time so I was struggling with what to do. Surprise. I was talking with my goat @rake-rattrap (who also beta read this for me and is my favorite person in the whole internet) about what to do when I had an epiphany. Look at seiji’s treasure/trouble. Tell me that is not echoing elphaba throw and her little green bottle and her annoying blonde roommate. So I started writing the scene where they first meet and realized that shit this was going to be really long.

today’s submission is chapter 1 of my wicked au. I WILL continue this I made too much lore to abandon it. It will be posted as a different fit cuz I don’t want all of it under the summer nationals tag so this is TECHNICALLY a one shot but ignore that. here is all of the art I’ve done (it’s a lot)

also reminder that I read the wicked books last like 4 years ago and while I do know the musical and movie inside and out, a lot of the lore i made for this is subject of my imagination. I made a whole ass magic system, government, history book, geography, social class system, etc etc etc like my whole ass was put into this I am so proud of it

This is a little early for me! I have. Jury duty. And will be conscious again sooner than I'd like to admit.

Rarepairs! I am honestly kind of surprised I had to make this tag (Harvard & Jesse), it feels like it would be such a Thing to explore and dive into and I was halfway tempted to make it longer, but I think they'd need a few more meetups before they actually committed to long conversations. Captain to captain. I think that if given the opportunity they could be really tight friends.

Harvard's always a fun one for me to get into. I love being in his head in particular. Stylistically I wanted to opt for a little more traditional narrative versus my usual style (which I think tends to blend tradlit with scripts, which makes sense since I have heavy backgrounds in both), and I think it actually worked out well. This has been such a fun event to take part in, I'm really glad I buckled down and committed to it. Will be continuing to read fics and reblog art and such with time, so if you see comments on these summer nationals fics in a week, it's because I'm painfully somewhat gainfully employed.

Day 12: unlikely friendships/rarepairs

Title/Link: Makeovers and first kisses

Summary: It starts as an innocent makeover. Things escalate.

The pairing for this story is Nicholas Cox/Bobby Rodriguez. It’s a story about lip gloss and first kisses and how it feels to find out that you’re in love with a close friend.

Also, a special thank you to @fencesummernationals2026 for adding both a rarepair challenge and a no hate/negativity rule to this event, because I’m pretty sure I never would’ve been brave enough to write and post this story without those.

Day 11: treasure/trouble

So I have a theory. Nicholas’s “trouble” is staying out of detention, right? And we know, based on these pictures, that most of those detentions were for fighting. (Obviously not all of them, I’m sure he’s gotten at least one for unexcused tardys or absences, but my point still stands.)

Spoilers for Fence: Game Changers under the cut:

Now, here’s the thing: thanks to Fence: Game Changers, we also know that Nicholas is willing to get into fights to protect other people, even people he doesn’t particularly like. He protects Kyle Allen of all people from a group of other kids, and he explicitly states that this is because he hates bullies.

There is absolutely no way that this is the first time something like this has happened. I guarantee you, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that at least some of the fights he got in trouble for back at his old school happened because he was protecting someone else from a group of bullies. I won’t say it’s how all of the fights he was in started. But I will say it was probably the reason for at least a few of them.

Some of you might be wondering why a school would punish someone for protecting someone else from physical violence. And the answer there is, at least in my experience, schools don’t care why you get into a fight. It doesn’t matter if you start it, if you’re defending yourself, or if you’re defending someone else… the second you throw a punch, for any reason, you get sent to detention.

However, if you don’t fight back, then the bullies remember you as an easy target, and your life gets much, much harder. And once you understand that, a lot of things we know about Nicholas start to make sense. His comment about how “this level of bullying is almost cute compared to my old school” when Eugene gave him the wrong directions to the fencing salle, combined with the panels shown here, make a pretty good case for physical violence and bullying being common problems at Nicholas’s old school. And his comments in “Fence: Game Changer” specifically suggest that he personally had to deal with those bullies, either because they were trying to target him, or they were trying to target his friends, or both.

For treasure/trouble I was admittedly stumped for a really long time. Kinda last minute, I settled on something really small but ultimately kind of sweet. With World Cup actively happening, it did make it a lot easier to get a little Dante in here. Especially looking at the schedule for the next couple of games, seeing Portugal actually playing pretty soon, it made sense to jump on that. So! Dante gets to have some fun wondering why his peace needs to be disrupted in the middle of the game he really cares about.

I haven't really written for Dante before, so it was definitely an interesting experience. He's quieter than I anticipated, internal monologue side of things anyway. Dialogue wise that was a given, but he's just a quiet guy. Just a dude. I dig it a lot actually.

synopsis:

“ninety centimetres of maraging steel. that’s all it was, really; plus a guard, pad, and a well-worn pistol grip.

and yet, it was also the world to jesse.”

for a while now, i’ve wanted to write a jesse character study, particularly examining his relationship with ambition, achievement, and his father. so, for this prompt, i picked jesse’s treasure - an épée his father gave him that he used in the olympics. it was my first time writing from jesse’s perspective, so i hope i’ve managed to capture some of his many nuances and facets of character! he’s a messy character, and those are my favourite. this fic was also heavily inspired by favourite daughter by lorde!

Fun little details abt each one:

Bobby’s is inspired by the trans flag! I’m sure all y’all know i HC that bobby is on the he => they => she pipeline so yeah it’s also coquette/pink clean girl idk

oh Jesse. King of gifted child burn out. Added the phrase “per aspera ad astra” which means “through hardships to the stars” in Latin (I think) which gives Jesse to me. I made the main focus quotes like “you can’t help but become the sun” (true blue by boy genius) and “destruction is not what I intended for you/but this is what happens to all who follow in my wake” ( a poem from Apollo to Icarus) because I don’t think he means to be a bitch but he’s been raised in the spotlight and hurt so many times that it’s his defense mechanism and he doesn’t mean to hurt people but he’s come to accept it as the consequence of being around him and that sucks poor baby

Aiden. I put so much effort into this. I was going for siren whorecore y2k vibes I think I achieved that. I added a care bear and a teddy bear to represent Harvard paw (aka the best character) I also included a lot of road signs cuz I think he drives to clear his head. And then the song I chose was teachers pet by Melanie Martinez (awful person fire music) because LOOK AT ME AND TELL ME THIS BOY WAS NOT GROOMED AND IS NOW HYPERSEXUAL SAY IT TO MY FACE (haha projecting on characters is fun isn’t it) but seriously. He is hyper sexual he uses sex as a coping mechanism/self harm technique tell me I’m wrong

I made Dante’s mostly soccer inspired since he’s the only non fencer I did add Ronaldo since his treasure is a signed poster of Ronaldo and I think he would drink sprite idk. Whole lot of unrequited love quotes because this boy is PINING. I did add the quote, “may the calm in you win over the chaos around you” because he’s like the opposite of bobby he’s the rock in the choppy ocean like he stays calm all the time and idk we don’t know a whole lot about him so I didn’t have a whole lot to go on.

EUGENE MY BABY BOY I could not find ANY of him on Pinterest (where I make these) like y’all we gotta lock in and post some Eugene to Pinterest anyway I added some orange postage stamps from the Philippines and included the phrase “mahal Kita” which means “I love you” in tagalog i did also add every Eugene image I could find what about it. I made him orange because Jesse already had yellow and I do see Eugene as yellow but I wanted each character to have their own color and he ended up rocking the orange so good for him. Added a goldfish cracker cuz I think he likes gold fish cuz his you get siblings eat them all the time so they’re always in the house therefore he eats them a lot too

Harvard is purple to me. I don’t know why. He is purple. I added some of those aesthetic definition things because he seems like the type to hang those up in his future minimalistic apartment lol. I added fencing elements into his unlike any of the others because I found a pretty stained glass one I liked and then it kept suggesting them and then I found that one picture of the fencing mask on the Christo redentor statue and I added it cuz I think he’s Brazilian idk

ah. Nicholas. I made him a silly little rockstar girlfriend one I did add a lyric from music to watch boys to (I live to love you and I love to love you) that I thought he would listen to while watching Seiji fence and be like “shit why am I listening to this I don’t like him FAH”

Seiji Katayama is old money yacht party pearl necklace striped umbrella summer in Italy. Need I say more? I added a lot of butterflies because they symbolize change and metamorphism and I feel like metamorphosis is a huge part of his character like he goes through a lot of transformations (before Jesse/after Jesse, before France/after France, before Nick/during Nick, etc) also i support suicidal Seiji with all my heart tell me that boy has not stared at knives and his parent’s pills thinking “I could do it. I won’t, but I could” and then convincing himself he actually isn’t suicidal and that thoughts like that are normal

wrote way more than expected and accidentally added a character analysis for a few of them? Also yes, I did add an “admit one” ticket to Eugene (cuz he’s the only one in the actual team who isn’t mainly shipped with someone else on the team) and Aiden (because he thinks he’ll always be alone and self sabotages) what about it
