A Good Internet Experience relies so heavily on unpaid and undervalued labor. Websites don't put any money into those experiences-- moderation is automated and frustrating. The internet is increasingly becoming a wasteland of AI garbage and misinformation.

I'm just saying... of the people providing alt text, building apps with better accessibility to use for less accessible websites, editing Wikipedia, moderating reddit... how many of them are autistic? There's a bit of a stereotype there, I'm aware of it with reddit mods, iNaturalist IDers, and wikipedia editors/fan wiki curators especially... but how much of the useful internet experience is held up by the gumption of people who are on the spectrum? Once I identified an old magazine someone found in an abandoned mine (with one single headline visible) only because some dude took it on himself to create an archive of fiction and short story magazines and the names of all the stories within from the 20s and 30s on a super 90s site, sounds pretty autistic-y special interest-y to me.

Just a bit of (safe) food for thought, maybe thank your local autistic folks for their service today. Maybe donate to Wikipedia or iNaturalist or ASAN or buy them a squishmallow or something idk

I get so irrationally pissed when I hear "autism presents differently in girls." NO IT DOES NOT. Autistic traits are PERCEIVED differently based on the perceiver's BIASES!! It's why when I displayed classic speech regression as a toddler, a known hallmark of autism happening at the time it usually occurs when an autistic child experiences it, my doctor AND parents said I was just refusing to speak because I was JEALOUS.

The trait was the same. The presentation was the same. But any adult who could have had me screened was instead too focused on GIRL, GIRL, VAGINA-HAVER, CAN'T BE AUTISTIC, MUST BE JEALOUS.

I believe the same for children who are not AFAB but were perceived as feminine. It's just misogyny. My chromosomes do not affect my autism or autistic traits.

The news says "autistic influencers are misleading adults online into believing they have autism too, reducing access to support for children who actually have autism" one day, then "here's 10,890 subtle signs in how your child walks and breathes and sleeps and stretches and carries things that means they definitely have autism" the next.

Which is why I, an online autistic adult, only get my news from reputable sources such as complete strangers at train stations and the library.

Reminder that adults seeking autism diagnoses are not taking and cannot take resources from autistic children. The more of us there are, the more resources are needed, but access to what support your 6 year old already gets will not be affected by my 40 year old ass. The more of us they are forced to recognize, the harder we are to ignore, the more we can push for more resources and support for your 6 year old as they grow up.

One weird thing about being a Somewhat Seasoned Adult is that I have a distinct memory of being a teenager left alone doing some fuckass "physical therapy" shit on that little Medical Trampoline Thing while all the physical therapists and the only other person there (older male client) at the time watched and rewatched a clip of Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction and loudly discussed how cool this new YouTube site was. And now, 21 years later, you can get bullied by a group of 30 year olds on there, see people defending eugenics in comments, and get pipelined into this thing called the "manosphere."
