so i told someone who i thought was my friend that they’re changing the diagnostic criteria for autism (among others) in the dsm to make specifically the ‘routines’ diagnostic feature into a required symptom, which would render a large number of previously-diagnosed autistics as unqualified for diagnosis, their benefits removed, their treatments stopped etc

she, an autistic adult, thinks this is a GOOD thing and will keep people who are ‘faking autism’ from getting diagnosed.

no one, and i mean no one, is out here faking autism to the degree of being believed by doctors, diagnosed, treated, and receiving benefits/SSDI from it. this doesn’t happen.

the sooner we stop worrying about fakers in any given neurodivergency community, the better our communities will be as a whole.

hey sophie! i saw you say something about how the non-disordered system community used "system" before "system of dissociated parts" and i would love to have a source/link! i've recently seen an anti-endo complain about endos "stealing the word from us with did" and how "endos are so harmful because of that". i would love to prove them wrong, as they've been extremely nasty towards endos and even got a very kind and helpful endo leave a server recently after one of their anti-endo rants.

The oldest source I can find to use this phrase is this one:

I also want to note that this is one use of the word system in a document that uses the word 72 times over 44 pages. These other instances have nothing to with "system" as we use it. I just find it interesting how liberally they throw the word around.

The above article is dated at 2004. If there's an older instance of the phrase "system of dissociated parts," I can't find it.

The word system was already in circulation by the non-disordered community before this, as evidence in this page from 1998:

The thing that most strikes us about the DSM criteria for DID is that it seems to describe an adversarial system among "alters" with struggles over power and control. If one assumes that different individuals in a multiple system will necessarily have power struggles, one is led to the (surely, slightly bizarre) conclusion that cooperative individuals are not really individuals: "No power struggles? No lost time? No lack of respect for each other? Then sorry, you aren't a "real" multiple, you're just a confused/misguided/malingering singleton." Surely, this is a philosophical question -- what constitutes an individual, what defines a person -- rather than a medical question? Personally I find it a fascinating reflection of what our society perceives as the characteristics of an individual: it reminds me of the list of characteristics which, when presented to doctors as describing a man, were diagnosed neurotic, but when presented as describing a woman, were diagnosed healthy. What does it say about a contemporary western view of the individual, when our doctors and therapists seem to require that *real* individuals will compete for control over resources, rather than cooperate? Will have an adversarial relationship, rather than a loving one? We don't claim that every multiple system/household is a happy loving cooperative one. What we do question is the *identification* of "real multiples" with the characteristics or symptoms of a psychological disorder. We go further: we question by what right or authority doctors and therapists are given sole jurisdiction over the definition of "an individual".
