Tried the No Sew Cake Buddy free pattern by @/solandis_crochet on Instagram!
If there's one thing that can derail my doomscrolling, it's a free crochet pattern that's entirely too adorable to be real. The fact that this one claimed to be no sew as well? Suspicious.
Naturally, I had to investigate.
Here's a quick review (plus a little modification idea)! This is just based on my own experience and isn't meant as a critique of the pattern.
Modification Ideas
One of my cousins mentioned they did this when following the pattern, and its perfect for anyone who prefers a sharper look to the legs. They essentially inserted another round between round 5 and round 6 of the legs that went like this:
R5.5: 2*[ sc, dec ] (4)
And respectively adjusted R6-7 to include 4 stitches each. The subsequent 3sc become 2sc. When attaching to the body, they replaced R5 of the body with:
R5*: 3*[ 3sc, inc ], 2sc with leg, sc, inc, sc, 2sc with leg, 3*[ 3sc, inc ] (40)
I personally decided to continue using the original pattern for my second and third time making this since I loved how it turned out the first time. Maybe the fourth I’ll try using this mod~
Making Experience
Honestly, this was such a smooth make. The pattern is clear, well written, and comes together much faster than you'd expect.
The only part I stumbled on was attaching the legs, but after a bit of trial and error it clicked.
I used some light brown coral yarn (gifted, so I don’t know where its from) paired with white/red/dark brown chenille yarn (Aran Chenille by Hobby Store), with a 3mm hook working through both. Mixing in coral yarn gave such a spongey cake look to the cake portions, I’d definitely recommend it if you have some (of suitable size) on hand!
For the bigger version (picture below), I used Hilush Blanket Yarn with a 8mm hook.
Would I Recommend?
Yes, a billion times yes. Although I’d recommend having some crochet experience under your belt; the pattern isn’t too advanced, but a complete beginner might find a few bits fiddly.
If you hate sewing, this pattern is a dream.
If you're a Jellycat fan who crochets... go make one.
I've somehow made three of these little cake friends already, and I have a feeling there will be more.
