Holly Herndon shares her conceptual and aesthetic process, dealing with academic and pop scenes and constrictions but always searching for a voice of her own. I don’t understand half of the technological things she speaks about but I loved this video.
//

“All I was really doing was making the music that I wanted to hear (…). In the academy, it’s like I wasn’t allowed to play music with a pulse. And I love music with a pulse, obviously! And then in the club to be made fun of for using a laptop. It just felt like this constant necessity to defend my position on things. And around this time is when I came up with the idea that the laptop is actually the most intimate instrument that we’ve ever seen. Because it’s kind of mediating all of our daily experiences, from Skype calls to e-mails to all these things. And I was trying to come to terms with that that meant as an instrument.” Holly Herndon: on process. Loop - A Summit for Music Makers (2015)
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of witnessing Daniel Barrow’s projector performance “Every time I see your picture I cry” in PLAY, a live cinema festival that took place in La Casa Encendida. I was captivated by his intricate illustrations, haunting words and fragile animations. I just dived into his website and this video of “Le Voleur des Miroirs / The Thief of Mirrors”, which is accompanied by a wonderful text. Below is an excerpt:

“This narrative is, in part, an homage to a popular cultural reference/television character – the “Kissing Bandit”. The Kissing Bandit frequently appeared as a character in sitcoms and romantic comedies of the 1960s and 1970s. (I remember this character appearing on The Love Boat and The Flintstones). He is a cat burglar who creeps through the windows of boudoirs, plucks jewelry off of his sleeping victims, and kisses them in their sleep. He leaves behind a long-stemmed red rose on the pillow as a signature and memento of his crime - leaving victims feeling simultaneously violated and charmed.
I am drawn to this largely forgotten archetype because I am generally drawn to characters that embody the sexual mores from the era of my childhood. More significantly, I am interested in expressing an entirely serious and political outrage using the voices of characters who have previously existed only under the auspices of parody, thereby walking the razor edge of irony while simultaneously challenging systems of class hierarchy and control in our culture.”
Valentijn De Hingh, Hari Nef, Amos Mac, Love Bailey y Nina Poon. // & Other Stories invited five transgender people to share a story that broadened the perspective on gender in fashion. Valentijn De Hingh, Hari Nef, Amos Mac, Love Bailey and Nina Poon.
"Fashion can appeal to a wider audience of people and maybe it will lose it's reputation as this scary, esoteric club where if you're not skinny, white, thin, cis-gendered, able-bodied and rich you can't participate". Hari Nef.
"Sometimes to get a political message across, having a commercial brand support an issue can actually help. (...) The thing that you have to be worried about is that it’s not just a fad. It’s not a fashion trend to have transgender people in a youth campaign, then after two seasons not have them anymore." Valentijn de Hingh.
"Art is not enough". A good article synthesizes the activity of Gran Fury, one of the most influential collectives in Artivism before this concept was established. Their fight against the governmental darkness and negligence surrounding AIDS helped change things through the use of advertising language and guerrilla tools, dissolving when they felt their presence was no longer necessary. This is how we've reached the present (on where youths don't know anything about safe sex, by the way).
"The Situationists believed that the collective should never last longer than the needs of the mission. And should always be interrogating itself whether the mission is accomplished. So it seems antithetical to your mission to last forever." Michael Cohen, 80 Washington Square East Gallery assistant director and curator.
//
"Art is not enough".

An audiovisual portrait of Saffron through metaphors and trompe l'oeil, The Anatomy of Saffron reflects this agencies singularity guided by the voice of Wally Olins himself. This is my second collaboration with the very talented Luis Úrculo after Dear New York. Lucas Bolaño (ELM) and I took care of the sound and music.
