im kinda scared for my girl ngl - art by me
Been rereading a bit and this spread from chapter 59 caught my attention. We get so many people's thoughts (Coco too says "For what magic gives me the power to do, for all I strive to do with magic" in the next page), but Custas' and Qifrey's panels are silent.
And it is interesting because you've got all types of reasons like ambitious and target-driven like Deanreldy and Ininia, moral-driven like Beldaruit and (passionately so) Easthies, and personal like Agott and Tartah. And then Custas and Qifrey, looking straight at the audience from different sides, on the opposite edges of the fan-like spread, silent.
On a smaller scale I wonder if that was an intentional parallel of the silverwood thing, though that might not hold up much considering Ininia is also a silverwood host.
But I believe it was meant to show that deep down, those two are driven to magic through their main goal of surviving. There are other causes they dedicate themselves to, like Custas helping the poor people that the leech attacked (making a clear point about class inequality too) and Qifrey teaching his apprentices about how magic can help people, but ultimately, Custas wanted/wants to keep Dagda alive and not die from poverty himself, and Qifrey wants to be free of the silverwood.
I'm not saying that the other characters' goals are lesser in any way, nor that the presentation itself implies that. I just feel that for those two, their goal of surviving the horrible cards they were dealt is such a simple desire that Shirahama chose to not voice it through their thoughts, and to have them parallel each other in such a way. At that point in the story, we know of Custas' motivations, but not Qifrey's, at least not all of it. Custas' thoughts there could have been "For Dagda!" or "For equal justice!" or something. But keeping him silent right along with Qifrey can foreshadow the revelation that those two come from the same place despite their vastly different backgrounds. And maybe the silverwood thing too. Idk.
