Not me thinking my nerdiness wasn't super overt and my two closest friends being like "that is one of your most prominent qualities and we love you for it."
beautiful almond but at what cost? :(
i love this season and the rewatchability is stronger for me than previously (2)
loustat is love. loustat is life. i do not understand how people can hate/ignore one and glorify the other. if you love them, you gotta root for their lover. that's the man making him better! sure, their love has a death count, but they cannot be separated.
claudia. i always knew you were insane but seeing a monstrous black girl awoke my inner cryptid and you inspire me every day. i hope delainey got the jam deal and is locked in for life just haunting the narrative forever someway somehow. she (and bailey) is in my top 3 scream queens on the 2020s.
as assad said, armand didn't know he needed *that* apology. he was expecting a 'sorry for not holding up my end of the deal' not 'sorry i didn't make space for your trauma'. it was beautiful. seeing assad disappear into the gremlin persona was personally inspiring as an artist. his entire sense of self was built on the sand of people's expectations of him :/
i love my fucked up vampires. i love my weird secret agents. i love my warm and worldbuilding ensemble. i love my goat music supervisor. i love my madman showrunner. i love my experimental writers room.

fandom has been a huge part of my life since i was in middle school, but it being largely online. being exposed to other media through school and a child of born to sci-fi/fantasy nerds gave me a different perspective most folks did not grow up with.
i rewatched seasons 1 and 2 in preparation with my mother who had avoided it because of the gore. when i rolin started to explain that the tonal shift is sharp in season 3, i was nervous and yes the premiere made me nauseous, i powered through and the second go around it went down smoother.
we could talk about normie infiltration and queer fetishization til the cows came home, but i think the real problem is that a lot of people did not develop their analytical skills in school or were not supported by their parents when it came to their niche interests. so when i see people forgoing nuance or projecting their desires onto IWTV or any art (The Pitt), i'm more sad than angry. hot take culture/cinemasin-ization of art has permanently damaged the good faith viewing experience for quite a few people.
i hope between now and the s4 premiere, people's ideas about the show grow and evolve, but recent history has shown us that that doesn't really happen anymore.
happy to see some sense in the IWTV fandom but even if i got pushback, i wouldn't care bc daniel hart responded to me on twitter and liked another tweet. excuse me while i dust off my music degree and do a couple of warm ups bc we are getting in that damn studio someway somehow
RE: TVL 3x06
the two black lead writers iwtv had 1) didn't work on the same seasons, 2) were men and only one was black american, 3) were always co-writers never sole. we have no idea if they have sensitivity readers/editors.
we've all heard heinous shit from family born in the 40s-60s. claudia was born in 1903. she is gonna say some wild shit to louis bc black ppl say wild shit to each other especially when we're mad. we should not be judging claudia by our 2026 pro-black standards. she is rightfully angry and trying to hurt louis. i say this as someone who's only read excerpts of merrick, they adapted her anger very well from the book seance.
last thing: what if they did have someone (a black woman from the south?) come in add the extra 'umph' and now she's seeing a bunch of black folk call her writing the product of a racist writer's room? the core writers who made this show we all love hasn't changed.
#black men betray black women every day#she could've said worse
I mean, I've seen comments from other black viewers/creators on TikTok who think Claudia not only could have said worse, but should have said worse. 🤷🏾♀️
Though yes, if she had said worse, and a black female writer had written it, it would be interesting to see what fandom would be saying right now about it. 🤔
I think what Claudia said was pretty tame compared to what she said in Season One. Which, yes, given the time period Claudia was born in? That language matches.
Because yes, I too have heard much harsher shit from family who were born after Claudia would have been, in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. And not only that, she's a vampire. Language like this is one way in which she has already tried to hurt Louis because of her hate of him. Again, as we saw back in Season One.
And many in fandom appear to have developed a case of collective amnesia about that wrt Claudia's character.
Trust me, if I felt a line had been crossed with this, I'd say it. As it is, I think they barely walked up to the line, never mind not crossing it.
On a discord I'm on for Black fans of IWTV/TVL, we're pretty much in agreement that she was pretty tame all things considered. I think she should have said worse. It's really wild to me that Black fans are acting like Claudia didn't call Louis (and herself) Lestat's slaves and that her calling him nappy headed and a slave was OOC and purely racist writing.
I think that some Black fans don't get how some Black people talk to and about each other or at least are trying to act morally/racially superior by acting like they've never said some out of pocket, over the top shit to another Black person.
A lot of this faux outrage and screaming about racist writing is largely because their view of Louis as some innocent, helpless angel and selfless father that just got dragged out back and shot in the head for good. Just Claudia calling Louis out for going after Bruce not actually being about her and the audacity to act like she should have been grateful for too little, too late. Daniel literally called Louis out for not prioritizing Claudia and choosing Lestat over her but because a lot of them see Daniel as racist, his words don't hold weight.
Louis had shown time and again that for all Louis's insistence that Claudia was all important to him, his words and actions never quite aligned and even if they did. It wasn't for very long i.e. attacking Lestat for choking Claudia to choking Claudia himself to dismissing Armand choking Claudia.
They also really don't like hearing Lestat threatening her with rape was a lie despite all the textual evidence even before the book was published to get Louis to go along with the murder plot.
There's also the fact that Claudia admitted to hating Louis more than Lestat which really doesn't gel with their racist White abuser view of Lestat (I've really seen takes about how that was the writers absolving Lestat of wrongdoing nevermind that it's quite literally lifted from canon and they are doing the books like it or not. She literally talked about using Louis to destroy Lestat and by extension himself to punishing them both for trapping her in the body of a child)
There's also so much of this believe that you can't hate someone and do things for them and show care when you 100 percent can. So much of "Claudia took care of Louis so she couldn't have hated him". It's both mind boggling and annoying.
It's also like relationship are usually nuanced and complex, loving someone doesn't mean you cant hate them. Just like liking or even loving someone doesn't mean you just accept everything from them.
And don't get me started on the thought that liking Claudia behaving in a very canon compliant manner is somehow internalized racism/anti Blackness.
A good portion of this fandom really has a problem with seeing Claudia as anything other than as a perfect victim, just like with Louis. She is/was a victim but that's not a free pass or an excuse.
Because let's just ignore that that scene is a near accurate lifting from the canon text or that vampirism is literally a metaphor for slavery, pretty sure that one of the characters saying that that's how vampires reproduce but you can't applaud her getting over on Lestat and act like she's incapable of lying to and manipulating Louis, that's not how that works.
i'm soooo happy that they've never witnessed the worst of black folk but this take gives chronically online to a degree i've never reached and i've been in tumblr for a decade.
the 'absolving lestat' narrative makes my blood boil. the desperation lestat called armand out for in paris lives in him and is why he sucks. i only started listening to book fans bc of DM fans and the dynamic was too interesting to tune out. i know when to step back as a show-only fan but also how to call out the disgusting calls for rolin's death and a total s3 rewrite. gtfo
we deserve to have black protagonists who are shitty. black people have range!!!

wake it up! i also think people still hate lestat and i hated him! i put too much stock into louis's POV and claudia's lie. i'm grown enough to admit it. a lot of people didn't adjust after the s3 premiere and it's ruining the fucking vibes. no lines were crossed that haven't been crossed already!!!

"She doesn't have that. No Madeleine. No rest."
This is a century-long lie. You hung her portrait over our coffins in New Orleans. It's sick. You're sick.
We're unnatural beings! And this-- this is the half-human soul that you conveniently whip out whenever you want to win an argument!
What argument you got for fucking your mother? It's sickness. Maybe the source of all your sickness. But my god! Seek a professional!
episode 6 of THE VAMPIRE LESTAT
Actually relentlessly thinking about Lestat and Louis' total acceptance of Claudia's fury and grief as one of the realest acts of love we've seen on this show. So much of this story has been about chasing the idea of her and making her something palatable or twisting her to fit their lives or their memories or making others wear the costume of her, and none of it works, because none of it is her. They render her a slip of life, when she was a full bodied, full spirited woman, and no song or doppelganger can ever truly capture her.
The beat where Claudia knocks Merrick forwards, knocks out her front tooth, and both Louis and Lestat lean forwards, lean into it - - it's a heartstopper, because they know, we know, it's actually her. The killer down in New Orleans who clogged the Mississippi with corpses, the girl who slit one of her fathers' throats, who wore the ring of his mistress, who goaded her other father to Europe and nearly left him in No Man's Land, who ridiculed him long, long before this episode (and in similar terms). This fanged and ruthless woman who they love enough to welcome at her worst. They don't want her filed down, they want the spark in the dark, in her eyes as Louis said two episodes ago.
Claudia's anger makes her real to them, and no door closes here. The circle's broken. They want her back, they're gonna have her back, and the undercurrent of this episode to me is that Louis and Lestat actually won't be mad about that because they really do fucking love her. They love and miss the worst parts of her, not just the best, and now that's what they'd bring forwards to the point they won't let her rest. They will have her miserable and as a malevolent spirit and they will call her daughter regardless, and none of her fury will ever actually matter so long as they can throw their heads back and laugh and commiserate with one another about her because they do love her, but they love her second to each other.
ohh i'm daniel molloy. i sold millions of copies of my best-selling novel. i'm a beast at bowling. i've got the french bengali smokeshow pinned against the wall. man fuck you
And gradually, over the next 52 years...
